I thoroughly enjoyed the book and read it in two sittings after hearing about it on NPR. My grandmother also spent time in Harbin as a teenager from Belarus. I don't know the exact year(s) but I suspect that it was sometime between 1914 - 1920 before she emigrated to the US. I appreciated learning about Harbin and the Russian Jewish community there. For the rest of Shapiro's story, I found it fascinating and inspiring.
Wonderfully written story of the author's life and memories growing up in pre-WWII Japan and China. Simply and unaffectedly told, I very much enjoyed this story of the remarkable life of the author and his family. It is a unique perspective on the war and post-war years in Japan by someone with a more panoramic view of the people and events. Thank you, Mr. Shapiro, for sharing your story with us!
Highly recommended. An Incredible story of family, immigration, community, and war. I had no idea that there was such a large vibrant Jewish community In China or that Japan, an Axis ally sheltered Jews during World War II. Mr, Shapiro’s life journey is truly inspirational.
A Cinderella story. How a Jewish refugee becomes Horatio Alger. I read this as there are few tales by foreigners from the war years in Japan. Ike and his family survives and then thrives. Good Karma.
I saw the author do a book reading on TV and answer questions about his experiences. My mother loves history and is a voracious reader so I ordered it for her birthday. She read it in 2 days and knows 2 people who want to read it next. She said it was very interesting and enjoyable.
