This book fills an essential niche between highly theoretical work on complex systems and the day-to-day risk management practiced in financial institutions. The author offers a sophisticated treatment of agent-based modeling using simple concepts and no mathematics. The work is deeply informed by a long career on the front lines of risk management, both in top global financial institutions and as a regulator. This distinguishes it from more abstract treatments or direct importation of concepts from physics.Agent-based modeling leads into a discussion of emergent phenomena, macro level effects that are not the intention or forecast of any individual agent. Here too the phenomena are strictly relevant to finance, both from observation of past crises and reasoning about potential future ones. Another feature of agent-based modeling is non-ergodicity, and fancy way of saying that sometimes the dice change in between rolls. Finance and other human interactions do not display the mild randomness of the casino, where all outcomes and probabilities are known in advance, and in the long run the house wins its expected amount. The author stresses that we cannot predict future crises from past ones, because we have no idea what will spark the next disaster. Personally, I would emphasize that people will react differently to the next spark because of what happened the last time--while there are an infinite number of bad things that can happen, there's a fairly small number of ways they usually work out. For example, we know that financial disasters are usually accompanied by credit contractions. You don't need to guess what's going to cause the next crisis to make sure you're prepared for credit disappearing. But this is a point of detail, I certainly agree that preparing for the last crisis is a poor approach to risk management. The result of all this is radical uncertainty. The only way to predict the future is to live it. The author claims there are no mathematical or analytic shortcuts. Here I think he overstates the case a little. There are top-down, equilibrium forces that have strong influences on events. They do not seem important at the height of the crisis, but they do matter. During a hurricane, it's foolish to say that air pressure has to equalize so there's no need to worry about the wind. But it's not foolish to reason from simple physics that it takes energy to maintain differences in air pressure, and so the hurricane will eventually run down. While reading this book, I was reminded of Tetsuo Takashima's novel Tsunami. Written six years before the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake, it posited a larger-than-forecast tsunami inundating a nuclear power plant. The hero quits his promising academic career predicting earthquakes to take a low level municipal job in disaster preparedness, and spends his time developing a simple computer application to link up local officials. He runs scenarios from the bottom up, not to guess when or where a tsunami will hit, but to react appropriately after one does. The tsunami predictions are worse than useless. After a shock, all transport and nuclear plants are shut down. Since it's summer and work is canceled and there's limited air conditioning, after a few days of no disaster, people all go to the beach, just in time for the big wave. Unless you can predict with high confidence well ahead of time, you do more harm than good. But bottom-up preparedness based on running many simulations with the people who know local conditions and will be making decisions in the crisis, do tremendous good, whenever the disaster strikes and whatever specific form it takes. The author keeps the book interesting for non-specialists by not getting into the technical details of how risk managers attempt to do these things. We're more likely to say we're doing "scenario analysis" than agent-based modeling, but it's the same idea, if a bit less fancy. You work out as many macro scenarios as you can think of, based on the past and speculation about the future, and try to guess how every important actor will behave. Since you never know that for sure, you run lots of simulations with random deviations. This is no help for predicting the future, you know it will not resemble any of your simulations. But there is actually a manageable number of key decisions: where to set limits, how much cash to hold, when to cut losses and so forth. If these are set in a manner to avoid disaster in as many scenarios as possible, you have some hope that the discipline of preparing for what you can foresee gives you the flexibility to survive whatever happens. Risk managers call non-ergodicity "regime shifts" and build them into models.Emergent phenomena are nice to think about, but have not found their way into risk management practice. The issue is that there is a cost to precautions. You need to make enough money in good times to make it worth surviving the bad times--and profits build capital and create equity value that can separate survivors from road kill in a crisis. There are enough known phenomena to prepare for, and the kind of preparations are generally useful for most unexpected phenomena as well. In most cases there isn't attention and other resources to spare for specific preparations for plausible phenomena predicted by agent-based models that has never been observed; especially because we cannot imagine them in sufficient detail to design many specific preparations.Radical uncertainty is used more in a negative way than a positive one. All model-based predictions--pricing models and risk models--are matched by a "and if the model's wrong. . ." contingency plan. The answer is not a backup model, but a checklist for how to survive when you don't trust models. The only major disagreement I have with the book is I think the author oversells how much good this does. Great risk management does not eliminate crises or make them easy. At best, it gives a little extra edge. In the long run, we hope that extra edge makes a difference, but (radical uncertainty) you won't know that until afterwards, if then. In fact, it is the idea that experts should be able to predict and prevent disaster that leads to people over-reacting to each crisis. People's expectations are so high, that their judgment of actual performance is so low, that they try to fix too much. This is the best available book that bridges the gap between academic theory of complex systems and practical financial risk management.

This is an important book on a critical subject. Every few years, we stumble through a financial crisis followed by post mortems that usually end up with folks throwing up their hands and asking "who could have known?" Crucially, standard economic models are not designed to gracefully explain crises whereas the agent-based models Bookstaber describes are intended to do exactly that.Part history, part philosophy and part polemic, "The End of Theory" is a great introduction to a new way of thinking about financial crises. To those who claim there is nothing new here, I recommend a more careful reading of the book. Clearly, some will react defensively to the criticism of neoclassical economics but it is important to keep the broader picture in mind. It is difficult to model future financial crises using historical data and standard methods. Bookstaber provides a way forward that is well worth considering and certainly worth debating.

Richard Bookstaber a long time finance practitioner/risk manager who has worked for Morgan Stanley, Salomon Brothers, Moore Capital and Bridgewater as well as the Financial Stability Oversight Council and the Office of Financial Research has written a broad-based attack on financial economics and the DSGE models now used by most central banks. Trust me he knows what he is writing about and in the interests of full disclosure I interacted with him when I worked at Salomon Brothers.Although not cited he is writing in the tradition of Nicholas Nassim Taleb (“The Black Swan”) with his fundamental disagreement with the theoretical underpinnings of financial economics. Simply put in a world of radical uncertainty we don’t know the underlying probability distributions of future financial returns and we don’t even know the potential states of the world needed to calculate a probability distribution. He argues that modern finance theory is built around top down axioms based on deductive reasoning where an all knowing representative individual calculates the future probabilities for all of the known states of the world. And importantly the future probability distribution is based on historical evidence. Under radical uncertainty that simply does not work.Instead he argues for agent based models built upon inductive reasoning where the actors are “reflexive” in the word used by George Soros, in that they respond to the actions of others. As much as economists envy physics, Bookstaber turns the Heisenberg uncertainty principle on them. Thus while financial theory works in normal times, in a crisis all bets are off as “stuff happens.”What Bookstaber would like is to use agent based models that are used to model automobile traffic and schools of fish, for example, through the use of complexity theory. All this is fine and good, but aside from a narrative Bookstaber does not offer up a formal model for the financial markets. Perhaps he has one, but it is not here. Nevertheless he offers a roadmap for future research. At times Bookstaber’s writing style is clear and lucid with analogies from literature motion pictures and military combat. He is a student of “OODA”, observe, orient, decide and act. He is particularly acute in his discussion of the origins of the financial crisis and is highly critical of the role played by Goldman Sachs in their failure to honor a small “novation” request from Bear Stearns, which brought that firm down. However, at other times his writing is dull and staidBookstaber has written an important book and it should be read by risk managers and policy officials. The old models failed in 2008, now almost ten years later it is time for new ones.

This is the second book I've read by Nikki. She never disappoints. This book took you for a ride on an emotional roller coaster. Griff and Crimson were a trip. I want to know more of Danielle and Rashad's story. Baine and Ike were very interesting it was a lot of mystery behind them. Mother Dear made this book she was truly one of a kind. I can't believe Nikki left us hanging with this ending. We need a Part 2. Please Nikki!!!!! We will be patient with waiting for Part 2.

You see that’s why I don’t even play with yo behind Nikki!Smh how could you?!I never liked jermy nasty butt nor Keon ugh!Crimson had them haters from the get go I truly hope that was not man baby in the car man.Mother Dear lord have mercy she the truth I can’t wait!! Don’t keep me waiting long Nikki BabyYou Stay killing the trap baby! Ten Stars

Anytime you see the name Nikki Nicole, you already know the count... you know things are about to get REAL and in the worst way!!!! She hasn't disappointed me yet, and for that, I'm here for ALL the shenanigans! Like all of her characters, she uniquely pens them, while spinning a world wind story line. She writes with such vivid details that you can give a play-by-play on each scene, much like a movie. Similar to Lays, you CANNOT read just one! Once you start reading, it's difficult to pull yourself way; just get cozy and prepare yourself for a Netflix and chill kind of night, only instead of a movie playing on the big screen, all of the action takes place on your kindle. I've ready all of her books, and there is not one character who comes close to Carius; Griff is what they call him! She took her time with him; he was uniquely customized for our reading pleasure. Unlike any of her other typical, street savy male characters, Griff will make you fall in love out his characterization alone. Mother Dear is the grandmother you don't want to try and just the person you want to see each and every time you go to the hood, Jermesha is the cousin you want to drag for blood, Keondra is the typical messy ex who can't take no for an answer, while Baine and Rashad need their own spin off (hint😊). Keondra definitely tried it, so I can't wait to take the next trip with the crew! I feel a series coming on, with a couple of spin offs...how you gone act Nikki? She did it again, and I'm not the least bit surprised. There were a couple of spelling/grammatical errors, but they took nothing away from the story line. And the playlist was jumpin like a down south reunion! You betta play Nikki...although I already know you play for keeps!!!!!!

What just happened, feel the air sucked out of body. That ending have me a headache. No way you left me hanging like that. Your books are the bomb but that ending omg!!

This was book was so good i am team Crimson and Carius beautiful relationship I hope there is a part 2 because I can't believe Zeondra came out on top in the end .....Great job

At first I was skeptical about this book I thought it’s was a standalone, but it has another part to it. The book is fire, like the main characters and got lotta questions but hopefully they’ll be answer in par two. I recommend this book to anybody that wants a good lengthy book that’s keep you entertained.

I love everything about this author. Once you read one of her books it just sucks you in. Love everything about her stories she got me wanting to date a Lucky, Griff, Dro etc.. whooo Chile.

I give this book 4.5 stars because it had a good story line. It was very interesting, cute and held my attention. It was a quick, fast paced read. The few things I didn't like were:1. There were a few typos but I knew what was meant.2. The use of full names when mentioning Crimson & Carius. Everything was Crimson Rose Tristan this & Carius Deon Griffey that. It might not bother some but I just don't know anybody that goes around calling folks by their full government names. 😁3. The use of the word "rather". Again it may not bother some but it bothered me. I just prefer it to be "whether or not" or "whether you like it" as opposed to "rather you like it". 🤷🏾‍♀️4. And my biggest dislike was the punctuation. There were a LOT of commas & question marks in places they didn't belong. It would read like: "Crimson Rose Tristan I love, you and I, want..." or "Crimson Rose Tristan I want you to have my baby? I promise I'll always take care of you?" Im not sure if the author intended to use a period or an exclamation point but it was obvious that the characters were making statements and not asking questions. Just little annoyances like that. But I still enjoyed this book.

An event filled with riddles and secrets that occured in the heart of Mecca the holiest place of Islam almost four decades ago. To hide away their shame and to eschew any similar attempts in the future that threatens the monarchy, the Kingdom buried painstakingly all the facts that sorrounded the incident. No one has the courage to talk about it let alone write a book about it. Finally someone dared to do it when the the most tragic incident in Mecca, where it left thousands dead and where an act of sacrilige was committed upon its holy ground, was about to die a natural death. From inaccurate speculations to unreliable anecdotes the November 1979 siege of the Masjid-Al-Haram has been sorrounded by stories, which after reading this book, I could just mockingly call all that are ascribed to the event a sidewalk tales. The most common of them all was the story that the miscreant radicals who laid siege to the Kaaba were Shiites that were trying to claim Masjid Al Haram for themsleves. However, this book claims otherwise, as the rebels were not in any way affiliated with the Shiites, or any sect on that matter, but in fact they were deviated Sunnis who have went to the extremes. This book will amaze its readers with the complexity of the event where we can make a realization that it was multifaceted and it was not shaded simply in black and white. As aformentioned, it was not sectarian battle let alone a religious conflict. As we go along further in reading the book, we will be surprise to learn that there was even an intervention from the allies of the kingdom which makes their position very complicated because they were non-Muslims and Mecca, for some reason, is off-limits to them. But in such a preacarious situation that needs an immideate and drastic solution, desperation prompts individuals to look for ways even if it seems impossible. While reading this book everytime I stumbled upon an Islamic matters like history, rulings and an Arab customs, (and I am not claiming to be well-versed on these aspects but I could easily distinguish if just for instance an anecdote being attributed to the Arabs are fake or genuine) I could tell that the author really done some research and this book is really accurate which illustrates his knowledge on the subject that proves his resoluteness in incorporating the authentic details in his book. However, there was one thing that I noticed from the way the author described some circumstances that though it is quite accurate but it was somewhat an indirect mockery of Arab or Islamic customs and rulings alluding to their backwardness and ineptitude. But be that as it may, setting all the egos aside here, the rest are amazingly accurate as far as my limited knowledge of it is concerned.Though the boook titled itself as “The Siege of Mecca” but I think the most accurate title would be “The siege of Masjid Al Haram.’ Only a very small portion of the entire city was held hostage by the radicals, in fact the sorrounding hotels and other establishment adjacent to the Masjid was still occupied while the rest of the city was running business as usual. And most of the intense fighting happened and contained inside Masjid Al Haram. However it is quite comprehensible that “Mecca” was used due to its popularity. The majority of the people of the globe have not the slightest idea or familiarity of Masjid Al Haram.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand and want to have a broad knowledge on what really happened in November 1979 in Masjid Al Haram. To those who want to learn of its minutest details and to learn of the root cause of the harrowing event and what prompted Johaiman Al Otiebi and his cohorts to do the most sacreligious, repulsive and abhorrent act ever committed on the ground of Kaaba.

This should be required reading for everyone who is trying to understand the catastrophic situation in the Middle East. The author tells the story of Wahhabi Moslem extremists, from many countries, attacking, and seizing, Mecca in 1979. This attack and the Saudi Arabian response was purely a fight among Moslems but it led to Moslem attacks on US embassies across the middle east due to Iranian propaganda blaming the US for the attack. In telling this story the author describes the history of the hundreds of years of radical Moslem religious turmoil leading up to this pivotal event. He then explores its aftermath and illustrates the continuing violence and terrorism associated with the Wahhabi extremism in many countries across the Middle East including the assassination of the Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. Today's events from ISIS to Iraq to Yemen to Syria to Iran to Pakistan to Afghanistan are much easier to understand given this perspective.

I was compelled to write a review for this book as I'm amazed at how well it was researched and written! I first heard of it from Shane Smith of Vice when he discussed it briefly while appearing as a guest on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. That led to me downloading the sample chapter and I was quickly hooked! I bought the rest of the book and spent the next day or so glued to my Kindle! This book is so well written and is an easy page turner despite the scope and subject. I learned so much even though it felt like I was just reading a good action story! Now that's a great way to learn without feeling like you're doing homework!!! The amount of research and investigation for this project had to be astounding yet the author clearly did a thorough job and then was able to concisely convey the results with an absolutely gripping and compelling narrative. That's obvious talent, and it was a real eye opener for me too! Many of the other reviewers here explain the book in detail so I won't rehash it myself. I will however highly, highly recommend The Siege of Mecca! Go ahead, entertain AND educate yourself with this one!!!

Let me being with I Never expected this book to be such a page turner.Reading this book non Muslims can see the blatant hypocrisy of Saudi Arabia in preaching and exporting convuluted brand of religion which has nothing to do with Islam. Its unfortunate that western powers and so called world moral authority have diberately kept their eyes wide shut for petrodollars and thus have suffered casualty along with Muslims who bore the brunt of the radicalization

This book gives the historical account of the takeover of the holy site in Mecca, an account which apart from this book is mostly suppressed, certainly by Saudi's, who see these events as a huge embarrassment. All that to say, this book fills the gap to a unique but very important piece of history. A second layer of the book, is how the events described actually led to the formation of many of the Islamic terrorist groups as we know them today. A third layer of the book, of course, is how this shaped the cultural and political/religious climate in Saudi today. A fourth layer, is the insights into the disagreements, hatred, and hostility among various Muslim factions. A fifth layer of the book provides a historical view of the Jimmy Carter era of Presidency. Don't get me wrong, Jimmy Carter is one of the nicest people ever to have been President, but overall, one of the worst President's ever. I lived through the Carter era and thought it was bad at the time, but reading this book made me realize I only knew the half of it.
