Review

“In this pioneering book, Dan Goleman and his collaborators demonstrate—in vivid and compelling fashion—how education can be transformed through a synthesis of these intelligences.”—Howard Gardner, Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education, Harvard Graduate School of Education  "In the 21st century, we need a new relationship with nature, a redefinition of both environmentalism and ecoliteracy. Ecoliterate offers a roadmap for educators—and the rest of us—to that future, one based on empathy, kinship, natural intelligence, and hope. We're in their debt for showing the way."— Richard Louv, author of The Nature Principle and Last Child in the Woods  “Gutsy, eloquent, moving, Ecoliterate is a masterpiece of motivation and practical guidance. Yes, it is perfect for educators, but it is also perfect for students, parents, grandparents, and all of us yearning to contribute to life on our planet. Ecoliterate will help young people discover their own power—and that genie is impossible to get back in the bottle! I love this book.”—Frances Moore Lappé, author of EcoMind: Changing the Way We Think, to Create the World We Want  “Beautifully written, accessible, and urgently important, Ecoliterate introduces us to individuals and communities around the country who in very real, practical ways are demonstrating that a new world is possible. No harangue here; this is about hope, embodied in educating our children—head, heart, and hands—to deeply understand how to take care of themselves, their neighbors, and the natural world on which we all depend.”—Michael Ableman, farmer and author of From the Good Earth, On Good Land, and Fields of Plenty  “To be Ecoliterate is to be equipped to be Earth Citizens, to reach our full potential as human beings. This important book shows us how."—Vandana Shiva, Founder, Navdanya International and author of Soil Not Oil  “Timely, important, healing, and hopeful—Ecoliterate is a ‘must read, must implement’ guide to a healthy and sustainable present and future.”—Cheryl Charles, President and CEO, Children & Nature Network  “The Center for Ecoliteracy has for years been a preeminent thought leader for how we can educate our children in a way that creates generations of earth-stewards. Ecoliterate is a much-needed guide for exactly how to accomplish this goal and includes great examples that demonstrate the success of their approach.”—Oran B. Hesterman, Ph.D., President and CEO, Fair Food Network

From the Back Cover

Hopeful, eloquent, and bold, Ecoliterate tells stories of educators, activists, and students who embody a new integration of emotional, social, and ecological intelligence. Building on the success of bestselling author Daniel Goleman's emotional and social learning paradigm, Ecoliterate shows how educators are extending the cultivation of these essential dimensions of human intelligence to include knowledge of and empathy for all living systems. Through stories ranging from the Arctic to Appalachia and New Mexico to New Orleans, the authors reveal how education that engages in some of the most pressing ecological issues of the day advances academic achievement, fosters resilience, and helps school communities play a vital role in protecting the natural world. The book also includes a professional development guide and exploration of five practices of engaged ecoliteracy: developing empathy for all forms of life, embracing sustainability as a community practice, making the invisible visible, anticipating unintended consequences, and understanding how nature sustains life. Praise for Ecoliterate "One of the most urgent issues facing humanity is fixing our broken relationship with the earth, on which all life depends. To do that, we have to think, feel, and act differently. With vivid examples and lucid analysis, this powerful and persuasive book shows just how much inspired educators and students can achieve together. It should enlighten and invigorate schools and communities everywhere." —Sir Ken Robinson, creativity expert and author of The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything "Ecoliterate provides a veritable how-to guide for educators to creatively engage young people in the most important ecological issues of the day, helping them gain knowledge of and empathy for all living systems, which is bound to enrich their lives and protect the future of our planet." —Gail Connelly, executive director, National Association of Elementary School Principals

This would be an excellent book for everyone to read, not just educators. I've read Daniel Goleman's Social Intelligence and Ecological Intelligence and love how he (and co-authors) have tied these great works together with Emotional Intelligence into a practical "guidebook." I love how they handle so many tough/unpleasant topics in a positive way, giving examples to all of us on how to approach difficult discussions and take action in positive, extremely effective ways. I'm looking forward to reading it again and sending gift copies to several people I know who would have great appreciation for the wisdom within.

I value the writing technique of telling the story from a singular individual, rather than simply stating statistics and facts. You are more able to relate to the person and have insights as to how you too could make a difference. As an educator, I appreciate how we can rethink strategies and lesson plans to better enable our own students to experience environmental issues and how they impact each of us and our earth.

This provides the reader with a a variety of case studies that have effectively applied the Eco Literacy principles to affect positive change in their communities.

Agaian good interdisciplinary approach

An excellent combinaton of theory and practice. Daniel Goleman uses exemplars from real life to help educators guide the next generation to use various intelligences to protect, support and provide for our Earth in sustainable ways.

fresh and compelling. My university environmental educations students really enjoy this book. They are finding it helpful and fulfilling!

Love it!

I especially liked the narratives of teachers providing opportunities for their students to learn first hand and then act and make a difference based on their learning.

Want to know why you are unhappy at work. OBTW this is Richard writing this...I am a Family Physician and I understand family systems. The foundation of the work compares organizational dysfunction to family dysfunction. It is a rational and easy to read book. It helped me understand the dynamics of my workplace and realize I needed to leave my job! Don't get me wrong....this is not the advise of the author. Once understanding the workplace is covered there are survival tips. For me I came to the conclusion there is little chance of recovery for the organization I worked with. A must read book for managers, owners and employees who want to grow and become healthier.

More than half of this book is dedicated to describing research that shows that males are more confident than females. After reading one example after another, I was left feeling that there was not much hope for females when it came to learning confidence. Only chapters 6-8 cover how females can raise their confidence level (or, in the case of chapter 7, how you can raise a confident daughter), and even then the advice is basically limited to "Be willing to fail. Take action. Feel the fear and do it anyway." If you really want to know how to raise your confidence level and get along in society, reading "The Charisma Myth" might be time better spent.

I bought this book awhile ago, before I retired, because I was in an ill-fitting job, a quiet introvert among a group of extremely confident extroverts, and I was desperate for help. I didn't read it at that time. I wish I had. I have never been good at self-promotion, but in a workplace full of those who are, it's necessary. And this book shows how reasonable and honest self-promotion is a good thing and not a display of arrogance. We think nothing of men pushing themselves forward and touting their accomplishments, but in women it's considered tacky. This book points out how men learn, from childhood on, how to be confident, how to fail without feeling like a failure, while women tend to back away from that. Perhaps it is changing now, but that is definitely how it was when I was growing up. And worse, it was such a part of the social fabric that I never even thought twice about it. Women who talked themselves up were haughty. Humility was more attractive for women. But this left us vulnerable in the workplace, relegated to the back as men naturally push forward, and that is what the boss sees, leaving women's contributions unnoticed or under-noticed. I experienced this myself as, uncomfortable speaking up, I would hear others say what I was silently thinking and they got credit while I appeared mute and empty of ideas. Very foolish on my part. This book helps explain a lot of the thinking behind these types of actions and shows ways to change.Truly, I thought this would be just another flavor of the day business book but I was pleasantly surprised. It is primarily aimed at the work world but contains information useful at any point in life. I'm glad I finally read it.

Best book I've read in decades; excellent research and science plus authors own experiences woven in. Couldn't put it down!

I would like to see everyone who teaches even one girl, young woman, adult female, etc. read this book. We need, desperately, to change the way women think of themselves. It took nearly 80 years for me to gain the self-confidence that my brothers seem to have inherited along with other genes. We must do better. There is a great deal of evidence to support my contention that our mental capacity is as good as or greater than our male counterparts. Let's do whatever is necessary to keep our females acting this truth. This book is a great beginning! Jo Seier-Doofe

This books is a bit fluffy but an absolute must-read for any lady out there. Why do women not negotiate as well as men? Why are (some) women not taken as seriously as men in the workplace? This book mentioned so many things that I used to do myself and I could see how i'm stacking the deck against myself without even knowing it. I read it before a salary negotiation and as a result, I upped my initial asking number (and they gave it to me!). It's a thin book so you'll finish it in an afternoon or two. Also half of it is fluffy and skim-able. Again, if you're a lady, it's an absolute MUST read.

I really enjoyed reading this book - it was like a summary of the many instances of my own crises of confidence through my life, and provided much food for thought. I had forgotten (at nearly 68 years of age) that I used to be so unsure of myself - and yet all the examples they cited of women whom they'd interviewed all sounded horrifyingly familiar. I think those of us who are older, who have stuck it out in our careers, have gradually learned that we must keep taking action, stop over-thinking, and accept being less than perfect, but, it was lovely to see the way they charted those conclusions all laid out so clearly.I am recommending the book to many of my younger women friends and clients. I am also discussing it with the men in my life too - because the men have no idea how deeply pervasive the feelings of inadequacy can be in their very capable and clearly intelligent women.

This book has a lot of interesting science but besides that I found it hard to stay focused when reading it. I basically forced myself to finish it because I hate starting books and not finishing them. I do think that other people may enjoy this book more though considering I tend to enjoy thrillers and self help books the most. I thought this book would be like a self help book but it wasn't quite to my taste.

I have read a lot of female empowerment books and what I loved about this one was how they roped genetics as part of the confidence issue. I thought it was really interesting to see how our DNA influences us-- but also to know that we can surpass our genetic makeup and pave our own path with confidence.

***some vague spoilers****2.5 STARSWhen I was a teenager, I would have lopped up FIVE FEET APART written by Rachel Lippincott from a screenplay of a movie of the same name premiering March 2019. I loved stories about sick and dying people, no matter how sappy or unrealistic.FIVE FEET APART adds a new twist on sick-lit by adding the very real scenario that two cystic fibrosis patients cannot be within six feet of each other, for risk of life threatening cross-contamination.As as adult, having survived cancer (so far) and being more cynical, I still enjoy sick-lit IF done well including:1. Respect for the illness-realistic portrayal of the illness and side effects (no miracle cures, no using the illness conveniently and forgetting about it when it’s inconvenient to the plot)2. Respect for real sufferers of the illness-characters are more than their illnesses even if the illness occupies a large part of their lives3. Realistic treatments and prognoses4. Realistic medical procedures (I’m okay with fictionalized treatments/meds as long as they have a basis in reality).Although predictable, FIVE FEET APART did all four relatively well, from my perspective of not having the illness. Sufferers may feel differently. Since the screenplay preceded the novel, character development outside CF was lacking. Lippincott gave each character a trait or two and ran with it: Stella organized rule-follower, Poe gay POC, Will artistic rebel. To be fair, CF can be a lifeconsuming illness.FIVE FEET APART, at times felt like tropeapalooza.Instalove: checkPivotal Argument: checkObligatory Death: checkMartyrdom: checkTo be fair, kids dealing with life threatening illnesses live with different timetables than those who don’t. Instalove on a hospital ward between two almost adults dealing with the same illness is more forgivable than in other settings, however the story spans over only a few weeks which feels more like instalove on steroids.I’d be most interested in how teenage CF sufferers felt about the book. They’re main characters in so few books, writers owe them a lot of realism and excellent storytelling. FIVE FEET APART is one of those books I’d have loved as a teen, then reread in my twenties and wondered why I ever liked it.

A novel about teenagers with Cystic Fibrosis? When I was a teenager in the fifties, there was Ellen, a girl in my school who had “something wrong with her lungs”. I remember her coughing, sometimes breathing noisily and sitting on the bench when the rest of us had PE. I remember the adults whispering “So sad” and “She’ll die young”. We stayed away. Maybe death was infectious. Ellen died soon after I graduated. That’s when I found out that it was cystic fibrosis that killed her.Now 60 years later I read about Stella, Will and Poe, normal teenagers, except there is nothing normal about their lives. They are in a hospital struggling to stay alive. The center of the novel is a love story. Stella and Will fall in love for the first time in their lives and grapple with the fact that it can be fatally dangerous to touch each other. But it’s also a story about friendship and it’s these friendships that are deeply moving: the friendship between Stella and Poe, who have spent months and months of their lives in adjoining hospital rooms, between Stella and her friends Mya and Camilla, who come to plan for their senior trip, which Stella won’t be able to attend, between Will and his friends Jason and Hope, who get an hour of private time in Will’s hospital room, and finally between Poe and his friend and lover Michael, who Poe pushes away because he doesn’t want him to get hurt. These friendships are special because they have nothing to do with pitying a person with a fatal disease. They are friends because they are important to each other. I love the kids and their story and I hope that there never will be another Ellen, who is an outsider because people are afraid that she’ll die on them.

I have a child with CF, and I bought this book because of all the hype that I was hearing regarding it. Yes there are some things they stretch regarding CF but I believe it just highlights and raises awareness for this horrible disease that we so need. Worth the read, and my 17 yr old son with CF enjoyed it also. (My son is waiting for a double lung and possibly heart transplant, this is a very scary time in his life, this book helped him feel not so alone, CFers can not “hang out” with each other so it makes for a very lonely disease)

2.5 stars.I sort of flew through this book. I had high expectations going in from the cover alone. With that being said, I did enjoy some parts. Stella was a sort of neat freak, controlling in a good way, character that meant well. Will was your cliche, I don’t care, rebel but he had his reasons behind it.I didn’t like the writing style of this book. I felt like some phrases and idioms were used over and over, possibly for emphasis but I found it annoying. Especially with it being 3 authors behind the book, I definitely expected better. The story itself fell a bit short for me toward the end. I won’t give spoilers but in certain situations, there wasn’t enough detail given. Fingers crossed the movie is better.

This book (I have both the Kindle and Paper Back) is my new buddy. I actually take it with me to Starbucks , to bed, to chit chats with my buddies.....but more importantly is why? This ETF for Dummies is John Bogle's "Common Sense Investing" and Benjamin Graham's "Intelligent Investing" synthesized into one enjoyable read plus much much more!!The other reviews describe the details. I simply like THE STYLE of presentation! The book is like having the stock broker on the phone when ever I wish , when I need guidance or a definition or an explanation as to the strategy and vocabulary of Wall Street. Russell writes as if it is a phone conversation with his client. The best part is there is NO HUSTLE. There definitely is with my Broker. So I look things up , get solid portfolio plans and options and I can call him back by lifting up the book and looking at the glossary, index or table of contents to get back in conversation with Russell.Russell tells me , hey , you want to get complicated here is where to look. Complicated is not in this book , but you have all the references to get further details clearly printed in this book. The Kindle Edition allows me to immediately go to sites on the web he is referencing or even to ETF's I wish to look up while I am reading, without going over to my computer. Way Cool!!!

I recently inherited $70k and have been trying to figure out what to do with it. The information in this book has been very helpful to me in learning more about Exchange Traded Funds. Not only is the book educational, but it is very practical. The author makes a very compelling argument for investing in ETFs. The For Dummies books are very, very underrated in my opinion. It is worth a look.

For someone, without a lot of knowledge about investing, this book was great! Wild did recommend Investing for Dummies be read first and I did that - it was very helpful as well. If you want to take charge of your investments and stop paying crazy high management fees to 'financial planners' that are nothing more than sales people - I have had two such financial planners - then this book is for you. I am Canadian, so I am now reading Wild's Canadian version of the book. It was not out when I read this book, or I would have simply read the Canadian version. Be prepared to do a lot of work and really think about this book while you are reading it - for me it was not a book that I read before bed - it was more a book that I read with pen and paper in hand. But it is well worth it!

This is a good read for those interested in ETFs. It covers the background and context a potential investor needs to understand the pros/cons of Exchange Traded Funds versus other investment vehicles like mutual funds or stocks. Dummies is very well presented and includes a number of options to put together various portfolios based on investor interest/life stage. Very good review of the players, history and differences among the rapidly expanding ETF world. VERY importantly the author spells out for even novice consumers what to look for in cost structure so they can understand how NOT to be taken advantage of - which can happen easily in the financial world.

Wild is an entertaining writer and he covers the subject very well. He shows how an individual can hold a diversified portfolio with a handful of ETFs. Index ETFs also have very low expense ratios. Actively managed funds often cost between 1% and 2% per year while some ETFs have a cost of 1/20%! It seems to me that ETFs are going to become more popular with individual investors year after year. It is a good idea to become familiar with them. The times they are a chaingin'.

Good overview of "how to" develop a diversified portfolio (equities and fixed income securities) using ETF's. I believe the information supplied allows the development of good self managed investment portfolio - equaled to a paid portfolio manager without the >1% fee.

I think this treatment of ETFs is all most people will ever need to gain and understanding of the security, how to select ETFs and how they help diversify portfolios.Investment professional (like me) will find the book to be a worthwhile, quick read and food for thought as well.

It's a quick and easy to understand read. I feel much more confident about investing in ETFs, both equity and bond. After reading this book, provided you agree with Russell's investing advice, you'll have a good knowledge base to build your portfolio using ETFs. I just bought the Bonds for Dummies book to complement this one, and so far it's been a good read as well.

Women Beyond Belief: Discovering Life Without Religion, by Karen L. Garst

Review

"All three Abrahamic religions are nasty, and women have borne the brunt of the nastiness throughout history. It still persists, and it is moving to listen to women of today telling their personal histories of the various ways in which religion has oppressed them, from childhood on. In their interestingly different ways their testimonies seem to add up to the same story, a story as old as the myth of Eve. I closed the book with uplifted admiration for all these women and for their courage in breaking their historic fetters." —Richard Dawkins, author, The God Delusion"From these delightful and varied stories we learn how many women are taught to feel inferior, sinful, wicked, and worthless but also how many escaped, some through sudden realisation and others after long suffering. Any woman who is hovering on the verge of giving up her indoctrination should read this book." —Susan Blackmore, author, The Meme Machine“When we see the world through other people’s eyes, our horizons are expanded and our lives enriched. Karen Garst’s compilation promotes just that." —Candace R.M. Gorham, LPC, author, The Ebony Exodus Project: Why Some Women Are Walking Out on Religion–and Other Should Too"Sometimes funny, sometimes fierce, often sad and exuberant in turn—these essays invite us along on twenty-two journeys into and out of religion—many from the vantage of a woman who at some point in her life tried to live by a biblical script and then discovered something better." —Valerie Tarico, psychologist and author, Trusting Doubt: A Former Evangelical Looks at Old Beliefs in a New Light and Deas and Other Imaginings“This is one of the most important books on women and religion in the last quarter century.” —Peter Boghossian, author, A Manual for Creating Atheists“Providing rich testimony from a variety of world views and walks of life, Women Beyond Belief is a refreshing snapshot of the cultural and social issues that inform women’s transition to secularism and nonbelief.” —Sikivu Hutchinson, author, Moral Combat: Black Atheists, Gender Politics and the Values Wars and Godless Americana: Race and Religious Rebels“Why would anyone embrace a male-dominated religion in today’s world, or any religion for that matter? Specifically, why would women embrace the religion of their male oppressors? Given the stories told in this wonderful tell-all book, they shouldn’t . . . . I bid all readers to follow the reasoning and examples of the authors in this book. Their stories are quite revealing and fascinating. Highly recommended!” —John W. Loftus, author, Why I Became an Atheist; editor, Christianity Is Not Great“Women Beyond Belief is a book of revelation, stories of social conditioning and personal self-doubt that have kept women ‘in their place’ historically and in our modern, supposedly educated world. Besides the sometimes wrenching accounts of eventual awakening, Karen Garst provides a very useful account of the Judeo-Christian tradition’s subordination of women that should be read by any woman who still labours under the delusion of a beneficial deity.” —Meredith Doig, President, Rationalist Society of Australia Inc."This book invites us into the hearts and worlds of women who have made the life-changing journey from believer to nonbeliever. Each story is unique, filled with anguish, brilliance, pain, and joy, not unlike having a child. And, yet, each story is the same. Each woman was in a very real sense reborn as they shed the cocoon of their old religion for the wings to take flight into fresh air. Women Beyond Belief is a testimony to the inner call for truth and the strength of these women to find it for themselves. I found them awe-inspiring.” —Rebecca Hale, President, American Humanist Association

I purchased this book because I know an author of one of the essays, Ruth Marimo. I have watched her journey from Christian believer to atheist and have read her other books.I found this book fascinating because of the very personal writings of these women. Their journeys were sometimes heartbreaking because of the reactions of their families and friends. But none of them regret making the decisions they did. While I have moved from Christianity to some sort of a belief in a higher power, I haven't made the leap to atheism. I don't know that I ever will, but I am glad that atheists are becoming more vocal and that there are organizations where they find acceptance. One issue I have with religion, and especially religion in America is that we put so much emphasis on politics and religion. The idea that god favors us because we are a "Christian" nation is appalling. This reasoning excuses our extermination of indigenous people, our treatment of slaves and women. This issue is addressed by many of the authors. The idea of living each day to the best of our ability, taking care of our earth and treating others as we want to be treated should be - but in practice are not - what are supposed to be basic tenents of most religions. The authors in the book subscribe to this belief and practice it much better than many believers. I learned much from this book, and I plan on reading it more than once. This is well worth purchasing and is very thought provoking.

Karen Garst was an atheist minding her own business until 30 June 2014 when the deeply polarised US Supreme Court ruled in the ‘Hobby Lobby Stores’ case, that employers are not obliged to provide certain methods of birth control to their employees, under the Affordable Health Care Act, if the employers have religious objections. That woke Garst from her apathy. She realised that the threat of religion to women is far too serious for her to sit idly by.The result was this book, a compilation of essays by women atheists who each provide her personal take on how religion had affected them for the worse. They each try in their own way to show that religion oppresses women. The contributors are from all walks of the religious platform from secularists to Fundamentalist Christians, Catholics, to Mormons, Jews, Pentacostals, and Lutherans. They tell personal stories of how they grew up as atheists or how they grew up in religious families and then walked away from their religion. The message from the contributors is simply that as long as women belong to the Abrahamic faith (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) they will never achieve the equality they seek in modern society. Garst provides her own piece in the Appendix to the book, entitled, ‘The Subordination of Women in the Judeo-Christian Tradition’.The problem with this and many Pitchstone publications is the absence of an index.

I've subscribed to Dr. Garst's blog, the Faithless Feminist, since she began writing it, about the same time this book was published. I resisted buying and reading the book, thinking, "well, I get the benefit of the book by reading the blog." I was wrong. When I finally bought and read the book, which is organised as a series of essays written by women whom Dr. Garst solicited to write of their faith or deconversion journies, the impact of the stories, as a group, was stronger than I anticipated. Here is a group of sincere voices, expressing their emotional responses to their own faith and deconversion experiences, in their own very powerful words. The pains of many different kinds of religious betrayals, witting and unwitting, are real and vivid in these stories. Read them for yourself. Notice how children’s sincerity is commandeered by indoctrinated parents into producing unintended and very real collateral religious damage in the lives of our sisters of many different faith traditions. In the end, it is difficult to not give credence to Dr. Garst’s claim that religion is among the most profound influences in the subjugation of women everywhere, including in these United States.

Wonderful collection of stories. I have many books from secular and atheist authors, but sadly only a small minority of them are written by women. Not only does this collection help promote women's voices but the stories themselves are fascinating and entertaining.

A thought provoking read, laced with both drama and humor, about women who didn't drink the religious Kool Aid. The book fairly questions the hypocritical aspects of religious institutions who promise love, acceptance, and a path to ethical perfection, only to frequently under deliver or completely miss the mark in demonstrating their self-made principles. This is only heightened from the female perspective, as religious institutions are male-centric by design. It is definitely worth checking this book out.

What an amazing collection of essays of diverse women and their experiences. I could relate to several of the women. This is helpful for any woman who is thinking of leaving their faith or already have recently. and needs that confidence and reassurance of being a new atheist. my heart broke for some of these women what they had to go through because of religion. I am glad that they are free and very happy now.

Each narrative is a powerful and moving account of courageous women from varied backgrounds and countries who left their religious upbringing and milieu to live a more complete and unrestricted life, often undergoing great hardships in turning away from the pressures of family and community conformity that religions use all too well to keep people in the fold, but especially employ to keep women marginalized as second class citizens. Dr, Garst provides another set of de-conversion stories for women still dominated by religion to read and realize there is a way out, many ways out. Great edited volume.

Thoughtful, enjoyable read on women who have deconverted

Good quality. So hard to find a scathing day planner. This one is perfect. Will definitely purchase in the future. I like that the dates are not entered so I could start where I needed to.

I bought this for a sarcastic friend of mine and she loved it. she send me pix of different pages letting me know she uses it and the joy she gets out of it

This journal/planner is a great gift for anyone with a darker sense of humor. It has is rolling as we read though a bunch of it.

Hilarious! Perfect component of a white elephant gift I made. If you or a friend have a sarcastic sense of humor, this is a good purchase. We still chuckle over it today.

Great journal for whatever nihilist is stuck in your life!

I absolutely love it, I can't wait to fill the pages with my disappointing life and adventures.

I love this book! I can't bring myself to write in it because I don't want to ruin it. I guess I should just buy a 2nd one.

Every year is fraught with tools and troubles. Finally a yearly diary that lives up (or down) to expectations
