I have long been a fan of Ian Fleming's James Bond books, but it has been a few years since I had last read them. So I am now on a campaign to reread them all in the order in which they were written beginning with Casino Royale. I also am partial this time around to the trade paperback versions with the slightly lurid covers always featuring a spectacular Bond girl. These covers seem particularly appropriate for the literary Bond as originally written.Casino Royale gets the Bond saga off to an excellent start. Most people have probably seen the recent movie version which I thought was outstanding, so you know the plot. Bond is introduced to us as he is first licensed to kill. As it says on the back of the book, he is charming, sophisticated, handsome, and chillingly ruthless. Fleming does not smooth out Bond's rough edges. He smokes heavily, can drink with the best of them, and basically only wants one thing from the women who are attracted to him. In Casino Royale, Bond is charged with the responsibility of neutralizing a high-rolling Russian operative called Le Chiffre. He succeeds in doing this in an extremely high stakes game of Baccarat, though not without a few problems in the end. Bond's efforts are helped by Vesper Lynd, another British agent. Bond and Vesper, as you would expect, become romantically involved, but true love does not win out this time.The Bond books are simply great fun to read, and Casino Royale is a particularly good one. Read the book, see the film, and then move on to Live and Let Die, the second book in the series.

Most of the the one and two star reviewers of this book were sadly disappointed, expecting that the glitzy movie version of Bond would be found in Fleming's actual books. But, with the exception of Sean Connery's Bond in the first three movies, and Daniel Craig's back-to-basics interpretation in the first three of the current series, the movie Bond character for the most part has been nothing more than escapist fantasy. The literary Bond isn't the superhero of the movies. He's a flawed, cold killer in the service of his country in a dangerous time.Written during the height of the Cold War, Fleming's Bond novels were based on actual people and operations that Fleming had first hand knowledge of because of his highly placed role in British Naval Intelligence during WW II.Rather than judge Casino Royale, or any of Fleming's Bond novels, by what you've seen in the movies, instead first learn about the real Operation Goldeneye; the real Operation Tracer; the real Operation Ruthless; the real No. 30 Commando Unit; the real Special Operations Executive; the real 10th Light Flotilla; the real "Smyert Shpionam"; the real Dusko Popov. The tradecraft, operations, units, events, and involved individuals were the very real WW II sources that Ian Fleming used in creating Bond and the world in which he moved. It's the Bond Daniel Craig resurrected until the new crop of Hollywood fools screwed it up again with November 2015's Spectre.I'll stick with the books, thank you very much!Fleming's writing style, while perhaps not rising to the expectations of modern pedantic poseur literary critics, is easy to read and follow. As would be expected from a successful journalist writing for educated U.K. citizens of the 1950s, his audience would have been quite comfortable with his style; his adding color by use of some French terms and phrases in a novel that, after all, takes place in France; and whom would not have needed sub-titles to understand their context. I didn't find that aspect disruptive at all to the flow of the narrative.If you want entertaining glitz, stick with the movies; if want something more, read the books! I've enjoyed them all immensely in the context of the time period in which they take place.Bond fans may want to check out flemingsbond.com, a treasure trove of factual information upon which Fleming relied in writing the Bond novels, and "Ian Fleming's James Bond: Annotations and Chronologies" by John Griswald.

There are two versions of this book for kindle, a 63 page version and a 189 page version. The 63 page version does not say that it is abridged. It claims to be just "Casino Royale" by Ian Fleming.The 63 page version is also a bad scan job riddled with typos.

Possible spoilers below-This kickstarter to the James Bond novels is written very well. From the start, Fleming creates a bond (no pun intended) between the reader and the cold, calculating spy that is James Bond. The atmosphere of the novel is indeed tense, and the expressions on the characters' faces are easily imagined. I was particularly impressed with the Le Chiffre character, who is written in a clear and convincing way. Fleming describes his facial expressions and mannerisms in a way that you feel almost familiar with him, and it's somewhat terrifying.There is a torture scene that is quite difficult to read, but its aftermath is what makes the novel. Despite all his coldness, James Bond's humanity is revealed in his romance with Vesper Lynd. You can feel his happiness at possibly having found a soul mate, his frustration when the relationship sours, and most of all, his bitterness and deep hurt when Vesper denies both of them happiness by committing suicide and revealing herself to him in a suicide note.In the end this is an enjoyable novel, though it feels a tad rushed, and is not really a "spy novel" per se. Only about half the book contains the "meat"- the poker battle with Le Chiffre and the later confrontation that sees Bond brutally tortured. The rest is more of a love story, but still provides valuable insight into the Bond character.The physical book is well put together, I might add. I prefer the modernized look and design to the rather suggestive covers normally used on Bond novels in the past.

I was very disappointed to discover that this is not what Ian Fleming wrote, but instead some sort of dumbed down condensed version. That should have been mentioned somewhere in the description. I feel rather cheated as I wanted to read the real book.

This author shows us how men and women of great intelligence, independence and integrity being engaged in a grueling effort to reach unanimous conclusions about 9-11 sadly find themselves manipulated, stymied and managed by the dark side. Nobody yet has any idea how this mass murder plot was pulled together. The only actual investigative leads, those clearly leading to the Saudi Ambassador are stamped out like a brush fire. In the end, Bush not only shields the Saudis, he also insists on protecting himself, Cheney and Rice from even the mildest criticism. Air Force General Myers and CIA director Tenent also flat-out lied under oath about the death of 3,000 civilians. Neither went to prison or even lost a day's pay. Maybe in 100 years the truth will start to be accepted.

"The whole system was blinking red." Unfortunately our "leaders" ran all the lights. Worse yet, now we have one whose whole life is about stirring up hate and discontent. His worshippers still pretend there were WMDs in Irag, as some now pretend there was no Nazi Holocaust.. The first lesson we learn from history is that no one ever learns anything from history. "Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad."

Even years after the commission report came out, this account (recommended to me by an Italian relative) is gripping and disturbing. I followed the commission's work carefully - reading all accounts in the New York Times, etc. - but always assumed they were covering up Bush's failures and Saudi involvement. This book, in describing how the commission went about its work, justifies my assumptions, and much more.The weakness of the two heads of the commission is astonishing. They wanted a unanimous report, but they got it at the expense of truth. The fact that they gave the job over to a republican partisan is jaw dropping. Those of you who are young enough may find out the truth in 50 years or so, but we certainly don't know it now. And, as usual, there was no accountability.I think it is a must read for every American, even now.

Great book about the 9/11 Commission. It had a ton of great details and covers the whole process. The only reason I gave it a four stars was the fact that the book starts off a little slow and throws a lot of information. For the first chapter or so it jumps around and a lot. Other than that it was an interesting read.

If we hold on to our critical faculties and thinking this book opens our eyes and see the unseen. The lies and the failure of the the elected officals that are put in office to serve the public have failed us miseribly. History will reveal and separate the lies we were fed on a daily basis by the media. We live in an Industrial society that in Eisenhowers farewell speech, he asked the people to beware of the Industrial Militery Complex. Everyone remembers where they were on that horrific day. If you are old enough you knew and recall the day a President was assainated in 1963. Like a scene from "The Newsroom"on HBO where were the reporters like Huntley and Brinkley, Walter Chroncite, etc. Instead we were fed ...repeating videos of towers falling, people running, smoke and death. Traumatizing and abusing a society of "Shock and Awe". Everyone should read this book.

This book is a must read for every individual who has read the 9/11 Commission Report and still believes the report was independent and is the most reliable and accurate assessment of the 9/11 attacks. Philip Shenon clearly shows how the most important member of the Commission, Philip Zelikow, the Executive Director and the 9/11 Report's main author, did his best to manipulate and sway the investigation and final report in favor of his friends and like minded ideologues in the Bush Administration.This book will undoubtedly infuriate most Americans who try to believe in our government and who expected honesty and credibility in the 9/11 investigation. Choosing the heavily conflicted Zelikow as the ED was the type of decision one would have expected from a third world country, it was the kind of decision that democracy suppressor Vladimir Putin of Russia would have been proud to have gotten away with. Shenon basically shows that when you start with rotten fish, you end up with rotten fish.Overall, I would recommend this book, it provides some good additional insight into the 9/11 investigation and shows how politicized it really was. Following are some of the other positives and negatives of this book:Positives:1. It's an easy and entertaining read, similar to the 9/11 Commission Report, and also written for mass appeal and corporate media approval.2. Has a good focus on Zelikow's many significant conflicts of interest and how the investigation and final report were heavily influenced by these conflicts.3. Highlights the incompetence and credibility concerns of Condoleezza Rice and other top Administration officials (particularly Tenet and Ashcroft, and to a lesser extent, the infinitely incurious President Bush).4. Provides some interesting insights into the commission's investigation and how important issues were addressed and resolved, including with the White House and the intelligence agencies.5. Provides interesting color and background on most of the commissioners and a handful of the key staffers.Negatives:1. Somewhat light on new facts. A lot of Shenon's information can actually be found in the 9/11 Commission Report (although with much less attention and / or buried in the footnotes) and Kean & Hamilton's, "Without Precedent." It does have the benefit of some additional insight from interviews with approximately 40 commissioners and / or staff, as well as Andy Card.2. It is almost comical that Shenon writes over 400 pages citing significant conflicts of interest by the commission's top member and author, a manipulated investigation and final report, significant and blatant intelligence failures, attempted "known" cover-ups, lying and unaccountable government and intelligence officials, etc, but then unquestionably assures us in about 1 page that only al-Qaeda was responsible??? It seems like a questionable conclusion on Shenon's part given some of the facts in his book appear to at least give rise to the "possibility" of complicity by others. David Ray Griffin's above review on March 19, 2008, actually addresses this issue in greater and more eloquent detail.America failed the victims and families of 9/11 when we sat idly by and blindly accepted the white washed 9/11 Commission Report. Unfortunately, we will probably never have a reinvestigation of the 9/11 attacks, but Philip Shenon has at least done his part in showing a vastly different story to the account held in the 9/11 Commission Report. For his part, Shenon has corrected a small piece of history, I can only hope that some of the other commissioners or staffers follow in his footsteps in further setting the record straight.

This is a must read for anyone wanting to know the details of how and why a handful of Islamic religious zealots were able to fundamentally change the way we in the United States look at ourselves and our relationship with the rest of the world. It was heartbreaking to learn just how dysfunctional our politicians, law enforcement agencies, defense department, and spy agencies were and probably still are when it come to protecting us from these types of attacks.

I’ve used this book for decades & it has worked better than any doctor, drug or treatment in alleviating back problems. I’ve recommended it to many people and given it as a gift to many friends with back problems. Never heard anything but thank you.

Everybody over 40 should have this book.It is just simple common sense things you should do before you take drugs or let a Doctor operate. This is not a "quick fix".... it takes time to "fix" your back.....potentially after years of abuse or a poor lifestyle.

I first read this book some 20 years ago when I was having back problems. Their stretching routine was a great help to me then. When I started having some back issues again in 2011, my first thought was to find that little book. When I did locate it on AMAZON, I discovered a new edition had been published.This is a very helpful book and I would heartily recommend it to anyone.

Old style illustration. Vintage 70s but the instructions seem to still be relevant.The big problem (as in most self help books) is that I need to just do it.

Not quite as succinct and well written as its predecessor "The Y's Way to a Healthy Back"

I bought this book because I had a similar on 20 years ago that was a big help, but with moves, etc, I couldn't find it so bought this updated version. It is quite different, but still very helpful. Book came earlier than posted date.

We actually took this course at a YMCA back in the 90's. They don't offer it anymore but the book is great and I was thrilled to see an updated reprint of it to send to my son and grandson.

Nice little books for my son. These are photo type books based on episodes from the show, however, so if you are expecting original artwork and stories you won't find it here.
