Needs to be updated. Found several statements vert antiquated and this is not something you want to mess around with. This is not a mystery novel

I ordered this book as a requirement for continuing professional education credit class (certified public accountant). The book is an easy read with lots of relevant, current information useful for those planning for their retirement; or helping clients plan.

This information is a must for anyone about to retire or has already retired. It is an easy to read book filled with no nonsense tips and I am glad I ordered it.t

As I write this review, I have to keep in mind that this book was written and published before the December, 2008, housing bubble burst. The economy is pretty much in dire straights right now, and many administrative economic changes are in the works, so I don't know if all the information in this book will still apply in the coming years. It seems now that retirement for most people will have to be postponed by at least 2 to 5 years. But, with that said, I feel this book has done a very good job describing retirement planning on a plethora of topics.My husband and I have been planning our retirement for several years now though both of us are still young and will be working for several more years to come. We have already done what most people don't do, save, invest, contribute to our retirement plans, etc....so that we will (hopefully) be financially well set when we decide to retire, assuming the economy will have recovered by then. Don't wait until you are 60 to begin planning your retirement. If you are in your 20's this book will be a terrific guide in how to plan properly for your retirement/new career. I love "NOLO" books because of the loads of good information they always have, and because they are so very understandable without trying to be humorous at the same time. They tell me what I want/need to know, or where I can find those answers, i.e. websites. This book covers just about everything one could think of and much more that you need to know, though you didn't know you needed to know it until you read about it. Tax deductions, investments, rental properties, contributions, home credits, exemptions, even alternative energy credits are discussed plus much more.Again, assuming the economy recovers and the tax laws aren't totally overhauled, I have found this book to be incredibly helpful.

Nope, there isn't anything flashy about this book. No famous gurus. No "secrets" or "systems". No celebrity endorsements. What you *do* get is reliable income tax advice that is targeted to people who are retired or close to retirement.Nolo is well known for its clearly written do-it-yourself guides to handling legal issues such as immigration, small business operations, and estate planning. I've used many Nolo products in the past and have always found them to be informative and practical. The Essential Retirement Tax Guide is no exception.As with just about all Nolo publications, this book is organized in an extremely straightforward way. Each chapter covers a broad topic, such as Health or Gifts, Inheritances, and Surviving Your Spouse, and begins with a checklist of potential tax credits and deductions. The text then explains the key principles underlying each topic and helps you figure out the federal tax implications of your personal situation.If you aren't already comfortable doing your own tax planning and preparation, it is unlikely this book will change your ways. Keep in mind, though, that even if you rely on financial advisors or tax preparers, it is always a good idea to become as well informed as possible about your finances to guard against incompetence and fraud.Bottom line: The Essential Retirement Tax Guide is a reliable, no frills-no hype resource for both tax planning and tax preparation. Anybody who is uneasy using computers or the Web will find the Guide to be especially useful since the IRS website and tax software help screens are often confusing and difficult to navigate.

As usual, Nolo has produced a fact-filled book on an essentially legal subject. Actually, eleven subjects bound together by the common thread of taxes. Anyone with an abiding interest in all eleven subject areas doesn't need this book - they are wealthy to the point where they would be foolish if they didn't have adequate professional assistance. In any event, none of the eleven subject areas are treated in what I consider to be a substantial way. That brings me to my concern about the authors and their qualifications. One of the authors, Twila Slesnick, appends Ph.D. to her name - but I have been unable to find what field that Ph.D. is in. Likewise, she says she is an Enrolled Agent. The Enrolled Agent program of the IRS requires "passing a comprehensive examination which covers all aspects of the tax code, or having worked at the IRS for five years in a position which regularly interpreted and applied the tax code and its regulations". Considering the low accuracy rates attributed to IRS employees offering tax advice, one has to wonder how "comprehensive" any examination offered would be and just what worth five years of experience wih the IRS has. John Suttle has a small law practice in San Francisco. In my opinion, neither author has an impressive biography. Much of the advice that I saw is essentially a restatment of the instructions from IRS forms in somewhat better English. In all, this is a general guide that covers a lot of subject areas in very little depth. I am not saying it is unhelpful. I just question the value of this book compared, say, to looking up what you need to know on the individual topics on the web.Jerry
