What if, what if... This story broke my heart. One thing out of many I took away from this is the incessant blame one gets when they claim something happened to them, or in the case of the camping trip.... sure they went on Federal Land, and that’s a side debate for later, but the action by the Air Force afterwards was completely unwarranted- they treated him like a suspected terrorist. When we think of crack pots it’s easy to single people out like Mr. Lovelace because their story doesn’t fit our own perfect interpretation of “how things should be”, but sometimes the truth is the men and women who claim to govern us, and who “knows what’s best” are the real crackpots. With so much evidence that transcends millennia, why is it so easily dismissed? Sometimes our enemies are the ones who keep telling us to “go to bed” , “your government is in control”. It’s BS, no one is in control, we are marooned on a blue space rock with no hope. Take care of each other people, and try to listen to one another. It’s all we have. Thanks Mr. Lovelace, I would sure like to punch Brad in the face, but he’s probably dead and being churned into worm food by now. Take care.

The immense treasure trove of evidence made available to the public is truly compelling.The heartfelt dedication and determination required to write a book of this nature is evident, especially when the author was advised to remain silent.With much gratitude, wishing you the health and strength to continue to share your work.

The events described in this book make it clear (to me) why disclosure would not be in the works anytime soon. While I believe people would be accepting of benevolent visitors, there would be pure terror if this scenario were found to be true.I have mixed feelings. My desire to have proof of extraterrestrial visitors is outweighed by a hope that they would not be as described in this book. If so....what are we but mere lab creatures being experimented on?A great read. I would recommend.

This is an intense story of one person’s lifelong experiences with aliens. Each reader will form his/her own opinion on whether Lovelace is telling fact or fiction. Interestingly, this book focuses equally on the reactions of his family, friends, and the military, and how he responded. This is a book about American culture as well as a memoir.Lovelace has a natural narrative ability. I cringed when I read how his parents and sisters reacted when he was a boy telling them about the spaceship. Granted, their reactions were likely typical for that era and for our society at that time. Still, I cringed.He went to law school and rose in his profession to eventually become an attorney general. He married, raised a family. Only after retirement at the age of 64, has he come forward. Given the skepticism in our society, it must have taken courage.So, read this compelling story and form your own opinion. It’s a page-turner. I suspect Lovelace has more to say, though.I gave this 4 stars because of the spelling errors.

I don't usually purchase books about alien abduction, but when I heard the author's account on the Fade to Black radio show I decided I wanted to know the rest of his story. Reading his account was just as compelling as hearing it--if not more. I would have read it in one sitting, but due to other commitments, I had to stop after forty pages. When I did come back to the book, I finished it as I simply had to see the story to the end. I would highly recommend this book to those who are interested in the abduction phenomena. I do hope that the author finds some relief from the drastic change in health he has endured. Speaking out, it seems, has its consequences.

Mysterious Universe podcast tipped me off to this book as well. Would love to hear Terry as a guest on their show. Captivating account of seemingly true events that line up with so many other eyewitness accounts. It's amazing how so many eyewitness accounts on a global scale can be discounted and brushed aside so easily (let alone the physical evidence uncovered in this book). While the book does have a lot of spelling and grammatical errors, that's not the point. The point is to sound the alarm that something is going on right in front of us and we are too closed-minded, blind, or afraid of judgement to pursue it further. I wish Terry had said a little bit more about Toby's eventual demise, but I'm sure it will come up in his interviews.

Never been interested in this type of book before, but something about the author and the reviews made me give it a try. Now I am glad I did. As fantastic as the story sounds, the author sounds completely creditable. All I can say is read it for yourself, then you decide.

I highly enjoyed this independently published account of alien abduction and government witness suppression. Lovelace's narrative echoes many other military witnesses who've experienced unexplainable and downright strange aerial phenomena. His experience suggests a real government long-term effort to suppress witnesses and evidence to UFOs. And Lovelace has the x-ray evidence to prove that something anomalous really happened to him. His story even contains the famed, proverbial "women in black" who continue to haunt him with thinly-veiled threats and unwanted appearances in his life. Should only be read if you are in the medical profession and/or another profession that requires you have knowledge of Flu. History of Influenza from patient zero through process. Really thorough account from disease spread to how they handled the unexpected number of dead. Reminds you of a Biology book from college. Don't get me wrong, well written, but maybe the only book that can put you to sleep quicker than the bible.

On February 25, 2016 my healthy 48 year old son died from the flu. This terrible event sent me in search of knowledge about the virus. The search led me to this book.The book is well researched, yet the key element that makes the book readable is the narrative about the state of medical science, medical schools and their evolution at the start of the 20th century. Then the historical context is set up for the events that followed. There is also a detailed account of why the pandemic took such a toll on the world.Every year we are told to get vaccinated against the flu. After reading this book and having lost my son to the flu, the book gave me a deeper understanding of the forces at work and why sometimes the outcome can be so deadly.I highly recommend this book.

This book gave me far more than I ever wanted to know about the Great Influenza Epidemic of 1918-19. It begins in September of 1876 with the founding of the Johns Hopkins University, with its emphasis on medical research. It continues with the difficulty in getting doctors and educators to believe that there was a place for research in medicine at all. While this may be very interesting to many (including me) that is not the thing for which I had purchase this book. I kept waiting for the plague to begin and, sure enough, chapter 14 begins with the news that in February of 1918 someone from Haskell County Kansas most likely carried the disease to Camp Funston, a U.S. Army training camp located on Fort Riley, southwest of Manhattan, Kansas. It goes on to tell in great detail the difficulty of convincing the army, or most anyone in power, that it was killing people, even as it was doing exactly that.The book is, my opinion, well written. There are so many characters, however, that I had to retrace my steps from time to time in order to refresh my memory of who was working to stop the spread and who was pushing hard to keep moving soldiers from place to place within America as well as abroad. It was primarily the troop movement that enabled the disease to become a world-wide pandemic.I do not wish to discourage anyone from reading the book: it probably explains how a disease killed more than 21 million people before it ended in 1920, in a world population of less than one-third of what it is today, about as well as it can be explained.If you should choose to read the book, just be prepared to decide how much medical history you wish to read. What is most discouraging is the fact that the American medical system isn't that much different in its unwillingness to accept change in the diagnosis and treatment of illness from the way it was then. Thankfully, research has prevailed, and science and technology have given us a great armament of knowledge and weapons with which to prevent and cure disease.

One of my all time favorite books is The Hot Zone by Richard Preston that explores the origins and epidemiology of the Ebola virus. I read it while still in high school and my interest in virulent and epidemic diseases has persisted since then.Typically I have a bigger TBR pile than I can handle so I tend to ignore the Kindle notifications about discounted or hot new books, however on a whim I checked one out and this book, which reminded me of The Hot Zone, was steeply discounted such that it was an irresistible purchase.The opening starts slow, and I'd argue the pace of the book is slow, plodding, and methodical, much as the scientists John Barry describes so vividly. Like Avery, he deep dives into the Spanish flu and leaves little if nothing unexplored. Like Welch he makes something deeply scientific approachable to lay people.I am especially appreciative that he took the time to develop the context so that readers could appreciate even more how influenza taxed both researchers and medical practitioners.Moreover Barry demonstrates the importance of vaccination and the continued risk and deadliness of influenza today without sounding like a government PSA. This is still a disease to be taken very seriously.Overall a gripping, thrilling read. I'm so glad for this whim of a purchase. My family...perhaps not so much as I've...uh....been talking their ears off about it.

The Great Influenza killed millions worldwide, and at the time, no one had a clue as to what it was, how it was transmitted, how it killed, or how to stop it. In fact, the so-called doctors and researchers of the day didn't even know what a virus was. The respones to this plague by chemists, clinicians, researchers, doctors and medical facilities changed the course of medicine in this country from that of little more than witch doctors and shamans to what we now know as modern medicine and DNA. It is a brilliantly written book, and one which will scare the living daylights out of anyone who will read just how appalling the state of medicine and medical training was in the early 20th century.

The early American settlers were not so lucky.It is a common misconception to view the local inhabitants as a homogenous, cohesive unit, when in fact they were split between dozens of tribes, some friendly, others not so much. As the story reveals, many Native Americans switched their loyalties repeatedly, making trust a major issue. It is beyond dispute that the American settlers and their subsequent generations badly mistreated the Native Americans, however it is naïve to suggest that, given greater understanding and empathy, the two sides might have peacefully coexisted. The clash of cultures, lifestyles and beliefs, coupled with the increasing flood of new immigrants made the ultimate result inevitable.All in all, a good accurate history lesson on a topic, though familiar in the broadest sense, not so much as it relates to the details. And as we all know, the Devil is in the details.

A good read for sure but the title is a little misleading. This book is centered around two specific events and the transition between the two is rather rough. The first 150 pages are about the Mayflower voyage, the first Puritan settlement in Plymouth, Massachusetts and their symbiotic relationship with the Pokanoket tribe. The focus of the second half of the book is the Puritan vs. Indian conflict known as King Philip’s War. This involves all of New England and happened about 65 years after the Plymouth settlement is established. Frankly, I was a little lost during the transition and it was a hard to follow for a few pages. I think that a more appropriate title would have helped. Something like the “Mayflower and King Phillip’s War” or “The Puritans in the New World 1610-1676” would have been more accurate.The settlement in Plymouth would not have survived the first year if it were not for their relationship with the Pokanoket Indians. The New England tribes were decimated by European diseases which they had no resistance to. Historians surmise that it was the plague that struck them in the first decade of the 17th century. The plague killed up to 90% of the Indians that had inhabited New England. The area where the pilgrims would eventually establish the first settlement of Plymouth had contained thousands of Indians just a few years prior to Mayflower's arrival. When the Pilgrims arrived it was unoccupied.The Pokanoket tribe was hit especially hard by the plague and they were weakened more so than several of the neighboring tribes. These tribes, such as the Narrangasetts, took advantage of their weakened neighbors. The Pokanoket chief, Massasoit, leveraged his relationship with the Pilgrims to survive against the Narrangasetts. The two groups more than co-existed. The two groups had a symbiotic relationship. Unfortunatly, the Pilgrim’s ancestors had forgotten how critical the Pokanokets were to the survival of their forefathers. Subsequent generations of Puritans took advantage of the Indians. This led to a war with the Pokanokets that on a per capita basis was the bloodiest war in the history of North America.The lessons gleaned form the pages of this book have been repeated over and over again throughout history. Bad policy started King Phillip’s war. It could have been easy to avoid. Revenge was taken by the frustrated Puritans who could not catch the warring factions so they conveniently took revenge against praying and neutral tribes. On the other side, allies of Pokanoket sachem King Phillip killed the relatives of Plymouth descendants of whom King Phillip considered friends. The conflict spiraled out of control.The war was not going well for the Puritans until Mayflower descendant Benjamin Church recruited a strike force of Puritans and Indians from friendly tribes. He was able to convince warring Indians to change sides and join Church’s party. Church granted them amnesty and these Indians in-turn taught Church their tactics. They taught the Puritans how to move without being detected and how to avoid ambushes and how to set them. Church and his combined strike force used these tactics to hunt down King Phillip and to end the war.The book gives Benjamin Church his due as one of the first great early American Indian fighters that you never heard of. Like the pilgrims, Church would not have been successful without his reliance on friendly Native Americans.Enjoy the book.

As an amateur genealogist, I have managed to trace my family to the Mayflower. I read about the Plymouth settlements and the ships in high school, but I think we ignored this part of history in college. This book is so easy to read and so factual that I couldn't put it down. I have both the paperback and the kindle versions - I've found this is the best way to read any book I want to retain and understand fully.

Excellent! The only criticism I have is that I wish it lasted longer. Very readable, and although I taught history at one time there are events brought to light that I did not know like: French fisherman brought the plague to the East Coast. I mean I knew about the diseases brought by earlier explorers to North & South America but I did not know about the plague coming to the North East the year before the Pilgrims arrived. The implications are fascinating.

If you think the popular history of the pilgrims is an accurate and sufficient depiction of the actual events then you owe it to yourself to indulge in this fascinating book which is "lean" enough with the details to keep the reader moving along in this frank and vivid account of the origins of much of this country's history.The fact that 35 million of todays citizens are descendants from that small colony of early settlers is reason enough to warrant your time and attention.

The book was quite interesting. It certainly varies from what I learned in grade school back in the '50s. The clash of cultures combined with the human tendencies on both sides brings closer to reality what happened back in the early Plymouth colony and the other Massachusetts and surrounding colonies. It is certainly worth a read. You don't have to be a history buff to enjoy it.

A great translation of a timeless classic. You know how it's going to end, but Sophocles does an amazing job of showing how Oedipus, like all of us, follows his emotions and intuitions (however logical he/we may wish to be) and misses clues that might have saved him a lot of trouble. I'll be reading this one again.

It's was an interesting read. I needed the book for class and I assumed that it would be an old boring play. It was far more interesting than I had expected.

"Oedipus Tyrannus" ("Oedipus the King") is not only the most read of all the Greek tragedies, it is also the most misread of the Greek dramas. The play's reputation exists in part because it was presented as the paragon of the dramatic form by Aristotle in his "Poetics," and it may well be because of that fact that "Oedipus Tryannus" was one of the relatively few plays by Sophocles to be passed down from ancient times. When I have taught Greek tragedies in various classes students have reconsidered the play in terms of key concepts such as harmartia ("tragic error of judgment"), angonrisis ("recognition"), peripeteia ("reversal"), catharsis, etc., and they usually agree this play provides the proverbial textbook examples of these terms.However, I was always bothered by the fact that Sophocles engages in some rather heavy-handed foreshadowing regarding the fact that the play's tragic hero is going to blind himself before the conclusion. The lines were closer to, dare I say, sophomoric humor than eloquently setting up the climax. But then I read something very, very interesting in Homer's "Iliad," where there appears a single reference to Oedipus which suggests that he died in battle. Remember now that Homer's epics were written several hundred years before Sophocles was born and that the Greek playwrights were allowed to take great liberties with the various myths (consider the three different versions of the death of Clytemnestra at the hands of Orestes we have from Sophocles, Euripides and Aeschylus). The Athenian audience would know its Homer, but "Oedipus Tyrannus" was a new play.This leads me to advance a very interesting possibility: the Greek audience did not know that Oedipus was going to blind himself. This was a new idea. Jocasta (Iocasta) appears in the "Odyssey" when Odysseus visits Hades, but the only mention of the sin involved is in her marriage to her son, nothing about his being blind. Obviously you will have to make your own judgment about my hypotheses, but I have to think it is at least worth consideration. Still, there is the fact that because even those who do not know the play know the story about the man who killed his father and married his mother, "Oedipus Tyrannus" is usually misread by students. Because they know the curse they miss something very important: the curse that the oracle at Delphi tells Oedipus is not the same curse that was told to his parents (you can, to quote Casey Stengel, "look it up"). As in his play "Antigone," where the main character is not the title figure but Creon, Sophocles makes Jocasta more than a mere supporting character in this tragedy.Consequently, while there is no need for me to convince you that "Oedipus Tyrannus" is a great play and the epitome of Greek tragedy, I have hopefully given you a couple of things to consider when next you use this play in class. P.S. You can also play the cherubs Tom Lehrer's song for the movie version of "Oedipus The King." That will broaden their horizons in a totally unexpected direction

This publication contains an Introduction with explanations of the history of Greek theatre, the nature of tragedy, the function of the chorus, and an analysis of the plot and characterisation. This edition also comes with foot-of-the-page notes and stage directions which are valuable when studying Oedipus as Drama.What I particularly liked about this publication was its readability, without being simplistic. This translation was characterised by clarity, accuracy, and power of language, retaining the emotion of the original text. I have been so impressed with this translation that I am seriously considering purchasing a class set to use with my students.It was a pleasure to see a copy of Oedipus especially developed for the stage rather than the page.
