There are so many things I liked about this book. It's so inspiring in so many ways. Makes you appreciate many things we all take for granted. How brave she was in the face of death. The love they shared. They kind of life they lived. It's a beautiful story. Well written. I just loved it.

I read this book the moment I got it. Then reread it. It's a story we all have become familiar with. A woman (a wife, a mother, a daughter, a friend) receives the diagnosis of having a very aggressive and unforgiving dragon called cancer. Amy Nappa and her husband Mike Nappa form a Facebook page to keep her family and friends updated on her illness. What happens next is simply astonishing. What starts as a few followers of concerned family and friends, turns into hundreds upon hundreds of followers across the country. Amy's faith is Christ, and love for her family and friends is an example of Jesus' love for us. The journey is sometimes funny, loving, inspiring and sad. But proof of Amy's unwavering trust in Christ is shown by words she wrote on a small piece of paper and placed on her refrigerator....."My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness." Foreword is by Grammy award singer/songwriter James Taylor (he sent Amy a video of encouragement). And the afterword written by two time Academy award winner Pete Doctor form Disney's Pixar. (He also hand drew Carl from the movie "UP" holding a single blue balloon. I encourage to buy this book and then give it to a friend. It is truly inspiring.

Fair warning. Have tissue handy, even when reading the book cover, Foreword, and Prelude. Wow! This read is an oxymoron. It's easy to read, but a tough read. It's serious, but humorous (LOTS of humor). It's informative, but conversational. The writers have a unique way to draw you in with a mini cliffhanger on almost every page. The reader is taken on a ride with these two love birds through Facebook posts that are footnoted with added tidbits. This book shows REAL lessons for anyone having difficult times...and we all have one or more in our lifetime. There are too many adjectives to describe this book, but inspirational, joyful, grateful, and funny are a few. WORTH.EVERY.PENNY. Ready. Set. Buy. (Ok. Pray too. :) )

I just finished reading this, I should say again. Mike has assembled the posts from the Facebook group that followed Amy’s journey through cancer and ultimately home. He has artfully combined them to tell a compelling story of hope, courage, and peace. I was blessed to call her my friend, and now blessed again by the story of their love.

Take a very personal journey with two people who love each other very much and have to come to terms with physical suffering and death. It's a deep look into their lives, but it will make you contemplate how you would handle the same situation. It's both sad and uplifting at the same time because the authors are honest about their emotions, yet share their hope of eternity. There's just enough humor to keep you sustained through the weepy parts. Read page 195 - it's beautiful!

This book is an amazing testimony about an even more amazing couple. Together, these two people have changed lives, and will continue to through this story. Reading this book, you’ll find yourself both joyful and sad, both in love and desperate. A must read for everyone.

While the book contains a lot of useful general information about Fixed Income securities, as a textbook it was a disappointment.The author assumes that the readers are familiar with some terms and concepts - a definite no for a beginners' textbook which this one attempts to be. Once I failed to do a homework problem (which reflected on my grades) because the parameter that was referred to as DV01 throughout the chapter was called DVBP in the problems that follow. Sure, for someone in the industry it's a no-brainer, but most people who are trying to solve the problems are not in the industry.I was reluctant to write this review because I heard some praise of the book and its author from several people, but here's something to consider: after nine years in the industry, whenever I had a question related to fixed income securities this book was of no help answering it. Need I say more?

FIMD is a good book but there is no practice problems at the end of each chapter. Also, it needs some knowledge of Excel.

Had to buy this for a graduate school class and it was awful. There were several incorrect formulas and the Excel examples are poorly laid out. Use a different book if you can.

Suresh Sundaresan's "Fixed Income Markets and Their Derivatives, 3rd" (FIM&D3) continues to provide a welcome introductory teaching text on the vast topic of "fixed income" (FI). My review is limited to four stars, however, because of some obvious additions that would have made the work more useful. This edition has improved grammar and editing and clarity and organization over previous editions.Sundaresan' FIM&D3 is appropriate for teaching an undergraduate course in fixed income (both for business and finance majors) and for graduate students in generalist MBA programs (but NOT finance MBA).It is necessary to compare competing texts to discover their merits and flaws, and given the vastness of the topic "fixed income" or "credit" no one text could hope to cover it all. The quickest comparison is to (never cited) Martellini and the Priaulet brothers' "Fixed Income Securities: Valuation, Risk Management, and Portfolio Strategies" (M&P's FIS). [Full disclosure: I am a colleague of both Priaulets and a student of Martellini]. Priaulet and Martellini take a direct, technical, and mathematical approach, in keeping with their own backgrounds in theoretical mathematics of FI. Sundaresan's FIM&D3 takes a more narrative approach, gently introducing analysis and functions. The texts aim at different audiences, and for those beginning on FI and then continuing on to a more advanced technical stream then M&P's FIS is the obvious choice; while those continuing on to a module on "marketing" would probably want to stick with Sundaresan's FIM&D3.Which leads to another curious omission in citation in this otherwise fine book: Frank J. Fabozzi is never mentioned nor is a single text of his ever cited. Academic jealousy being what it is (Sundaresan is at Columbia and Fabozzi at Yale) and competitive publishing being tooth and nail probably explain it. Still, as the author or editor of over fifty titles on fixed income Fabozzi's absence is glaring, especially in light of the fact Duffie and Singleton are cited throughout. The gymnastic gyrations necessary to avoid citing Fabozzi boggle the mind.Fobozzi's texts often suffer from being two different kinds of monsters: a "Frankenbook" or a Hydra. For Fabozzi's Frankenbooks, he WordPastes previously published chapters of other books, adds a single specialized chapter on the title's topic, and slaps a new cover on it and shops it well. Customers are often disappointed that they previously owned 90% of a "new" book from Fabozzi simply because they already own a few other of his titles. "Hydra" books are multi-headed monsters, trying to straddle the two horses of the demands of market practitioners, with those of teaching academics (who in turn need undergraduate, graduate generalist (MBA) and graduate specialist (MSFE, PhD) texts. Fabozzi's titles reach for all markets and often end up pleasing no one.And so Sundaresan's FIM&D3 plays specifically to a more limited audience and is a success in contrast.The overview chapter is thorough introduction to the major topics of inquiry in FI, covering general contracts, the over-the-counter nature of much of the market, players and their objectives, and the high points of risk (with counterparty risk strangely glossed over in "contractual risk'). An introductory technical chapter on price-yield conventions follows. A flaw is the U.S.-specific nature of the examples, amplified by closely examining the role of the Federal Reserve in Chapter 3. Market structure is examined in chapter four, touching adequately on primary and secondary markets, but rather thinly on interdealer brokers ("the street"). A vanilla chapter on repo and repo agreements and treasury auctions fills out the first part.Part two covers analytics in more depth, beginning with explications on DVO1 (the price of a basis point) duration and her many forms, and touches rather simply on convexity. It is here that sample spreadsheets and VBA code on programming a more robust duration calculation than that offered by MS Excel would have been welcome (Simon Benninga's always excellent "Financial Modeling in Excel" is the best text on the subject.). Yield curve dynamics and models are covered, but frankly here is where it is glaringly obvious that CD-ROM or dedicated website spreadsheet examples are needed. Chapter 10 on modeling credit risk is an excellent one-chapter introduction to a vast topic in and of itself (libraries of books are available on this topic alone).Part three cautiously titles itself "Some Fixed Income Market Segments" and is apt. Sundaresan covers agency debt, mortgage-backed securities, and inflation-linked notes. The brevity of this list of FI instruments only amplifies how long the list of what he does not cover is.Part four introduces FI derivatives, beginning with overnight rates, Eurodollar markets, treasury futures, and credit default swaps, and glossing over structured products in a chapter on collateralized debt obligations.The text ends with a fine glossary of terms, and an index that appears adequate but not complete on all nouns and subjects (authors in the "suggested further reading" were sometimes not indexed, for example).I am an academic and a practitioner, so I like to see a bibliography: strangely absent from this work, with only a handful of "suggested references and further readings" at each chapter's end.For professors (such as myself) there is a very welcome dedicated website from the publisher with additional materials for lectures and assignments (registration required).In summary, this is a text I would consider adopting if I were teaching an undergraduate or generalist graduate course in fixed income. FIM&D3 is a adequate, readable, well-organized, clear, logical, overview text of a vast field that quickly breaks down into difficult, technical, and arcane specializations. The mathematics used is not beyond those who have completed college level algebra (very little calculus is assumed). There are a plethora of additional topics I would have preferred were covered (portfolio approaches for market-makers, as well as investors, correlation, transition matrices, etc.) but perhaps those are best left to specialist or advanced texts.

This very book provides a very objective detailed overview of the debt markets. The author is at his best discussing fixed income securities. Since it is the first edition, there are several minor technical mistakes which I am sure going to be corrected by the author in the second edition. I wish the author had focused more on the derivative side of the fixed income part of the paradise. I also expected to encounter more actual application coverage, i.e. hedging, speculation, arbitrage etc. One chapter in the end of the book encompassing advanced strategies with fixed income derivatives would be very helpful for various segments of readers. Obviously, this book was written based on the author's lecture notes (he is a business school professor). But for those who have not attended his lectures, the book is full of nonsense.The book was not only poorly written by a foreigner whose mother tongue is apparently not English, it was poorly edited. For instance, you can easily find out exactly same descriptions in different chapters, which I have never seen in any book I have ever read. I had an impression that the original manuscript was so terrible that editors gave up their jobs before publishing. No wonder the 3rd edition came out from a different publisher (1st & 2nd from Thomson Learning). I guess the author had to find out a new publisher.The good news to the author is that there are few textbooks out there covering the same topic. I hope somebody will write a good book for students.

I call Manhattan one of the five stars because along with Veritas Prep, Kaplan, The Princeton Review, and Magoosh they represent the top class, you do not go wrong with one of them.However, if I should pick one among, Manhattan Prep is probably my favorite for different reasons:The strategy they teach is almost score-proof;Their practice material almost always - if not always - is the one that most closely resembles the original content provided by the author of the official exams, being GMAT GRE or whatever you could imagine;Their tutors score in the 99% percentile score;Their offer to the students stretches to the best, in every aspect.With all this in mind, I have approached the new book, the newborn, the newcomer with such enthusiasm. No really, I am so passionate to exams such as GRE and GMAT that when new material comes out and as it turns out it could give me a new insight, a new hint, a unique perspective to tackle the exam, well, I am so happy. Eventually, I went through the book in one breath. I have to admit it is a kilometric book. I bought in Kindle edition, but I do not want to imagine to bring it with me around: over seven hundred pages - a tome. They have condensed what was divided into several books in the previous version - Manhattan Prep GRE Set of 8 Strategy Guides - in one huge brick.Before we had the book of algebra, the publication of word problems but now we have all these in one spot called unit. In the same unfolding of the books aforementioned.According to the same company, this book is "The content in the new Manhattan Prep GRE Math Strategies is an updated version of the math content in the Manhattan Prep GRE Set of 8 Strategy Guides." Unfortunately, this is not correctly true, if not at all. I have scanned the entire book from the cover to the acknowledgments, and the only difference I have spotted is the missing table about what to do and what do not with inequalities (it was so useful as a recap for the student to bear in mind).For the rest, if you compare every single book of the previous version with this book side by side, not a comma is changed. No a single question or example to teach, to mastery, to consolidate every unique concept exam-related is new. ALL IS THE SAME. This book is exactly the mirror of the previous book sets. On top of that, things get worse when we reach the end of the book: in the earlier version, we had the drill sets to cement every single math concept, strategy, tips taught you along the way. Moreover, we had the practice question sets in which the questions had been divided into easy/medium/hard level of difficulty and the questions itself were amazing. Everything was perfect (or almost).In this new version, all this have been faded out. Completely. Gone. With much my surprise, I must admit. It is a real step behind, almost a Waterloo for Manhattan Prep, considering when it comes out with a new product the attention to the details, the high stringent standards they use both to craft the theory and the practice to provide the top-notch material overall. Of course, we cannot pretend that from one book to a new release an overhaul comes into play, this is impossible. Unless the exam itself is not changed (the last GRE shift was in 2011) most of the books are good for years to come. However, in this case, the amount of money that the students should spend on this new-old version is not justified.For those who do not have the previous set of books, I would certainly buy this. Having all that Manhattan offers in one book is convenient and easy to use. However, who has already the previous release, is time to look somewhere else. Here, there is nothing new under the sun.I would give it five stars because the quality of the contents is high, without a shadow of a doubt, but a copy and paste this turn could be avoided.Domenico AKA Carcass.greprepclub.com

I have no sophisticated math education credentials (unlike one of my impressive fellow reviewers of this text), however, the authors do. Obviously. My own background is applied engineering and I do know working math and test taking. This is an excellent preparation or review tool, moving the student from the unknown to the known. Clear explanations and logic is shared along with the problem solving examples and exercises. Not familiar with previous editions, but this appears to be an outstanding GRE math resource.

What a great book. Manhattan Prep keys on the people who had scored in the top 1% for their strategies in taking the math portions of the GRE. You get a lot of practice in this book and, just as importantly, strategies for efficiently taking the exam.

"Annie, Between the States" is a good quick read, appropriate for middle school through adult. There are no intimate or graphic scenes, or profane language. The plot is about Annie, a teen in Virginia, who must weather the course of the war around her home, Hickory Heights. Annie endures many battles, and becomes close to General Jeb Stuart and Colonel John Mosby, of the Confederacy. During one of the battles, she befriends a Northern boy, Thomas Walker, and Walker becomes entwined in Annie's story as the war rages on.The book is well-written, with no typos or editing issues. The plot moves quickly; I was able to finish this over a weekend. The historical references are well-researched; and history is not exaggerated or overwhelming, but presented plainly, enhancing the storyline. The characters are barely developed, but the simplicity is not detrimental. The romantic elements, advertised by the publisher, are non-existent. This isn't a Civil War soap opera, but the struggle of one girl against all the wartime elements that threaten her family in sort of an after-school-special presentation.I gave this book four stars due to the disappointing ending: the resolution seemed quickly contrived to close the book, rather than sticking with the plot development that has built for 90 percent of the story -- as if the author was called on Thursday evening and told the final chapter was due on Saturday. I was particularly disappointed with the sudden Hallmark-type of realizations by the characters at the end, with no thought as to being logical or true to the characters up to that point. This left me feeling cheated of something that could have been more.

Good book for teens learning about the civil war, though I agree with other reviewers a bit too heavy on details/facts in the beginning of the book and I could see a few locations throughout the book where edits could have been made, such as no need to describe in great detail how a dance is danced, just tell us they danced and what went on with the two characters.The story does pick up the pace mid-way through and that is when it starts to get interesting, plus the writing tightens up.It is essentially the tale of a Virginia girl trying to keep her family intact and torn between her loyal to the confederacy and her growing love of a union solider. I think I would have liked this book more when I was 14, clean romance intertwined with historical fiction

I first read this book my sophomore year of high school. Then re-read it for a book report my senior year. This it the third time I've read it! I normally never reread a book but I absolutely love this one. The way Annie steps up and does what she needs to to help protect her family, she truly is Lady Liberty for her family. The relationship that developed between her and her husband in the end! The love he has for her is truly amazing.

Fabulous! Very well written historical fiction. Annie is likeable and her dilemma is an intriguing possibility. Historical facts woven throughout seamlessly and brings well-known characters from the Civil War to life. Rated G, which is SO unusual, today. Safe for any age.

I enjoy historical fiction, and I liked this book told from the viewpoint of a Confederate family in Virginia. It was historically accurate and is a good read for anyone wanting a foundational story concerning the Civil War. It sometimes felt it was trying to cover too much territory, mentioning many major battles and events in order to give the reader a lot of elementary history. Having said this, though, too few people know enough about the events of the Civil War and the tremendous toll it took upon our country as whole; I applaud the author for giving her readers a pretty good historical piece that fosters knowing more about this crucial time period in American history.

I loved this book! The "real" historical characters included in this story were authentic based on information I have read of them. The many painful (and some happy) situations this family went thru as residents of Virginia during the Civil War seemed realistic and drew me in emotionally. And the love story was very sweet! I only wish the author had included an epilogue to reveal a little more of their love story when they were finally together... they were rarely together in the story because they were in the middle of War and on opposite sides! Otherwise, this was a really great historical fiction book and I would highly recommend to history lovers!

I liked this but it is suspiciously similar to, & not as well written as, The Bregdan Chronicles by Ginny Dye. I'm not sure who had the original story line but they are virtually identical. I would have liked this better had I not read the others 1st. Since they are series there is a lot more detail than in just one book. If you haven't read the series try this one & maybe you will want to read the others.

How many times do you hear someone say I couldn't put it down? This is just another book that I could not put down! The author is done an amazing job of weaving together history and romance. I thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns of the plot as well as the accuracy of the historical events. A must read!

This is a very focused book on the lighthouses of Wisconsin and, as such, will be of interest to those who would like to have a complete reference book on hand of the lighthouses of Wisconsin. These include those on Lakes Superior, Michigan, and Winnebago. The authors leave no lighthouse unturned, as it were. The text is very well written and supplemented with excellent photography.

Great book, nice to find something unique for a gift for someone from Wisconsin and a love for the lighthouses there! The book was a little bent on the bottom corner but it looks like it happened while being shipped in the paper package, other than that it looks good!

This book not only met but exceeded our expectations. The info is presented by regions making it easy to read about a particular area the reader might be interested in. Not only does the book provided practical info but also explains the history of the region and the lighthouses which will enhance any visitor's experience. Excellent price also compared to others I looked at in local bookstores!

I enjoyed this book. It's a great reference book. It's obvious that the authors have done a lot of research. The photos enhance the overall reading experience.

I purchased this book for a gift. It is so intriguing that I am going to go find all of these lighthouses. Great visual for the coffee table. Opps... I did not give this book away...I kept it for myself!

This was and gift to my soon to be mother in law and she loves it. She will get alot of use out of it!!

While the pages may appear busy to some readers, the exuberant display is packed with detail and humor and suits the story well. Good story. Couldn't find it new.

I have been to the Giant's Causeway in Co Antrim, Ireland and it's awesome! A must see. I knew some of the story of Finn but, this book filled in the gaps. It's good for both children and adults.

What a great book!Retold Irish Folklore accompanied by beautiful illustrations.Small glossary to help with the pronunciation of some Gaelic names.The story kept my 4 1/2 yr.old's attention (re-read many times), and made me laugh out loud. We loved it! My favorite line..."Finn overcame with wit and wisdom that which might never have been done by force." Words we should all live by!

One of my all time favorites. Illustrations are fantastic and the writing is suburb.

Robert Byrd has completely captured the original folklore in this beautifully spun tale! This is such an excellent book to help teach your children at a young age some of the wonderful stories found in Irish Folk Lore! I absolutely love it and so does my 4 1/2 year old son!!!
