Hamed Abdel-Samad is a German-Egyptian political scientist and author of several best-selling books in Germany. A former UNESCO consultant on Arab education, he has lectured on Islam at the University of Erfurt and Jewish and Islamic history at the University of Munich. The son of a Sunni imam in the Egyptian city of Giza, he now ranks among Islam’s fiercest critics. Educated in English and French at Cairo’s Ain Shams University, politics at the German University of Augsburg, and Japanese at Kwansai Gakuin University in Japan, he has published five books, most recently the best-selling The End of the Islamic World and War or Peace: The Arab Revolution and the Future of the West. His columns appear regularly in German national newspapers such as Die Zeit, Die Welt, and Cicero, and he appears frequently as a guest on television and radio programs across the German-speaking world.

This book is the best I ever read about Islam. I am familiar with Sam Harris, Hitchens, Dawkins, Robert Spencer and others, but they all pale and shallow in comparison about Islam. They lack knowledge of Arabic language. Without proficiency of Arabic language, no one can understand Koran, hadith and how Muslims think. In other words they don’t feel how bad Islam is, and what is going inside the heads of extreme Muslims. The author on the other hand is from an orthodox Islamic back ground and probably started as a follower of Islamic groups. His excellent knowledge of Arabic enables him to understand, feel and trace back every word of Koran to its original sources and proved that thousands of words are not Arabic. He knows the Arabic language and religion than Muslims themselves and stops them on their track, when they dare to claim that others (western) miss interpret, twist and demonize Islam. On top of that his political and historical academic studies in Egypt, Germany, Japan and USA, qualifies him to lecture in universities and top respectable institutions especially in Germany, Japan and internationally. Very few indeed could write books in different languages.I am following Abdel-Samad over the internet, in his own program “Box of Islam”, on Hayat TV and other Arabic channels. He is very knowledgeable, convincing, eloquent and personable, concise, straight to the point and wins all arguments.Islamic Fascist book started with explaining the ideology of Fascism, how it started in Britain and spread to Italy then Germany. In the same time The Muslim Brotherhood started in Egypt as a reform movement which calls for spreading Islam all over the world and forming a central ruling Islamic government called Kalifate. Abdel-Samad proved without doubt that the Muslim Brotherhood, inspired by the Nazi regime, copied and contacted Hitler for support. The book followed the Brotherhood Fascist movement thru its long journey from 1920’s till ruling Egypt thru sham election. They used the slogan of democracy as Trojan horse. They ruled for one year, failed miserably till the masses kicked them out. They left the scene to regroup and left Salafism in their place.The book also traced the democratic movement that started in Tunisia, the Arab spring, to end up in failure, and the Islamic Fascist weakened but still exists. Also the book talks about various terrorist groups that have Islam as its base, like Boko Haram, Al-Shabaab, Al-Qaida, Gamaa Islamiyah and others.The book traced the roots of Islam and showed it is built on Fascist basis. Islam means total submission to God and his prophet Muhammad. There is a constant fear of unbelievers and the call for spreading the words of God (supposed to be love, peace, coexistence and accepting the others), but after few years Muhammad started a terror campaign invading other Arabian towns; his successors continuing the tradition of Jihad and spreading Islam throughout the world with the sword and terror. Islamic Terrorism still rattling the world till present time and won’t stop. The book talked about the terror organization like Al-Qaida, ISIS. ISIS is the first state of Islam, Kalifate that actually occupied Arabic territories and bringing recruits from all over the world. Abdel-Samad showed us that terrorist groups by using the calls for fulfilling the will of God, can defy any calls for moderate thinking. He Said that Lamya Kaddor, an Islamic moderate reformist who started Islamic education in Germany, lost five of her young students to ISIS, who left Germany to join the bloody terror ruling of other Muslims in Syria. They weren’t even Arabs! Four of them Turkish and one Kosovo-Albanian (P152).Abdel-Samad considers Satire is a form of civilized criticism, broaden the thought horizon, accepting different perspective and mind opener. He tells us a joke by one of his German friends, who studying theology, about a Bavarian butcher who went to heaven…….(p199) it is very funny. Abdel-Samad draw comparison between the Danish and Charlie Hebdo incidents that hundreds lost their lives in its wake, it is very sad. To insult Muhammad is a sin punished by death. Ironically during the Muslim brother’s rule, Bassam Youssef, who criticized them bitterly, never got persecuted. After june.2013 revolution many writers, cartoonist even four young students (under 18 and considered children) who put half a minute’s video on YouTube, making fun of Muslim’s prayer got four years jail sentences.The book talked deeply about historical and political aspects of Islamic Fascism. The book also talked about the psychological built of Islamists leaders, followers, terrorists, jihadists. How young people in Germany, frustrated, looked down upon, no bright future and thinks that they are second degree citizens. When they hear the calls for Jihad, spreading the word of good, martyrdom, heavenly hurries they blindly follow. Especially when they promised leading military command post, ruling other Muslims and infidels alike and with a word decide who is going to live and who is going to die, also will have numerous women slaves from the Christians, Yazidis, curds villages they are going to acquire. my father told me long time ago..the people of Egypt have greatness in their DNA...I thought he was exaggerating because he loved Egyptian History , literature , art , music , philosophy , etc ..... today I 'm reading a masterpiece that attest to the same greatness my father was so enamored with ..this book is an infinite wealth of knowledge brilliantly hypothesized , debated , explained...it just doesn't get any clearer than this ..if you want to understand the roots of violence, terrorism ,backwardness in the middle east ..this book is a must read for you...

An absolutely excellent book on a vitally important topic. There are so few voices among Ex-Muslims. Hamed Abdel Samad is articulate and intelligent. A voice of reason in a world full of violent religious mania and politically correct censorship.The Regressive Left hates him because he does not fit the blatantly false narrative that all critics of the ideology of Islam are White Supremacists.Muslims hate him because he knows Islam. He is a hafiz (one who has memorized the Qur'an) and his father is an Imam.He cannot leave his house without police protection... which proves his argument. Islam is a totalitarian and fascist ideology that commands the genocide of all who refuse to submit.This book is worth the money, and I will be passing it down to my children so they can be prepared to defend freedom of thought, speech and conscience.

It also added to my perspective on the pros and cons of seller financing from both the seller and buyer point of view. I need to educate myself on how to structure and negotiate these deals, so that im equipped with all the options for a given situation, along with the terms that are appropriate. That is not found here, and to be fair, was not claimed to be. This is a sometimes repetitive look at why SF is still viable and why you need to use a professional within the domain (and of course, the author is the ideal fit).

I found the book to be a very readable basic explanation of how Dodd-Frank applies to the seller and the lender, with a smattering of other rules and regs. The preface had a core of delightful humor. The resources at the end look very handy. The only caveat is that it evidently was written several years ago when the market conditions were slightly different than today.

This is a very comprehensive guidebook of Bali, the Gilli Islands, and Lombok. Howerver, if you are planning a trip, I would actually appreciate more concrete, practical advice on what to do and see, and how to go about doing that, in s smaller amount of space to save time in trip planning. The book has lots of good ideas, but in terms of the "how" it takes work to extricate that, if you can even get it. For example, the author lists Blue Bird taxis as the only ones you should take...and then you get to Ubud to find that they aren't really roaming the streets there, and the only way to get a taxi is to hire a stranger propositioning you on the street! I also think that the author is a little too casual about the country and could offer more advice to solo travelers to make it easier on them. The itineraries are interesting, but again, they take work to figure out and the book needs to make it easier. That said, there are many details and recommendations in the book, and the breadth and depth of information is unmatched. I got very sick on the Gilli Islands and used the book to help determine the best thing, which was the doctor listed in a resort hotel.

I've been going to Bali for years. I have also been using Lonely Planet books while travel there. I just bought the new version and guess what, it's pretty much the exact same info from the last few versions. Hotels for example, they list only a fraction of the options and they review the same few places year after year! I should say they literately just paste the same review over and over. It makes me sad to have this format become outdated but I'm heading to Bali again soon I'll I'll just use apps from now on.

I took both the LP and the Rough Guide to Bali. The LP has the edge in formatting - its two-column format is easier to read. But I preferred the Rough Guide for its more detailed information on the sights I wanted to see. It also seemed that everyone had the LP -- which means that LP-recommended places are more crowded (to the extent they differ from those in the Rough Guide). The two are similar in content, but I think the RG is the one to get.

 I was hoping to be inspired by beautiful pictures of the country, however, in lieu of pictures there’s just big blocks of text. The few pictures there are could have been taken anywhere: close-up of surfers, pictures of sea creatures, but nothing that gives you a bigger picture of the area. I’m a pictures girl, so I was definitely bummed when I opened the book 😕

Contains very limited information on Lombok. Should be called "Bali...........and Lombok, sort of". Lonely Planet is getting a bit greedy with their pricing of this guide.

Book was very helpful - I checked out some of the starred places to stay and restaurants and they were good recommendations! I would have appreciated more background on the Balinese culture in terms of their Hindu religion and how it plays out in their daily lives. Also more detail on some of the activities such as the hike to Lempuyang.

It is simply okay. Doesn't surprise you at all.I like Lonely Planet guides because they take you to places you cannot easily discover and make you feel like a local. It is not the case on that one.

This 3 Star thriller started out great the the ending was a bit of a let down for me.SUMMARYSeraphine is a 25 year old trust fund baby living in Summerbourne, her family's beachside estate which is about 3 hours outside of London. She LOVES Summerborne, not just for its serenity and magnificent scenery, but alse she and her two brothers were raised there. She has no desire to ever leave.Life has not always been easily for Seraphine and her family. The day she and her twin brother Danny were born, their mother Ruth jumped off a cliff into the ocean and committed suicide, leaving the twins and their older brother Edwin motherless.Throughout their childhood, the whole village told stories about Seraphine's family. One of the stories claims she and Danny were not the real "Summerborne Twins," but actually sprites traded out for the real twins. Although that was clearly just a tall tale, it hurt Seraphine's feelings and alienated her from her peers at school.While the sprite rumor was a bit wild, people constantly commented on the fact that Seraphine looks nothing like her brothers and that she is different in many so ways from the rest of her family.The villagers often speculated that twins could not survive at Summerborne. History seemed to give this theory some merit. Before Seraphine and Danny were born, their brother Edwin lost his twin, Theo, in a tragic fall off the same cliff from which their mother Ruth fell. Even before that, Ruth's twin brother Robin died in utero. Village legend tells a story of the Summerbourne relative who built the estate, one of his twins was taken from the estate, never to be seen again. It does seem being a twin at Summerbourne comes with a high risk.Now, to add to their family's troubles, their father recently fell from a ladder and died.Feeling lost and wondering if there is anything to the constant rumors, Seraphine begins to dig into her family's past. What she finds surprises her on many levels.WHAT I LOVEDI loved the setting! I absolutely love Brit Lit, but this kind is my all time favorite, an old seaside family estate. LOVE IT!The plot started strong, a woman alone, wandering around a secluded estate which is rumored, at the very least, to be jinxed with bad luck. She starts digging into the family's past looking for secrets, all along mourning the loss of her beloved father and the mother she never knew. It has serious potential.I liked the way the story was told, alternating between the viewpoint of Seraphine, in the present, and Laura, the au pair in 1992. The translation were smooth and well timed and it gave the reader a wider picture of what was really happening.WHAT I DIDN'T LOVEThere were many things the characters did that seemed weird and "off." I don't want to give too much away but I can say that certain 'couplings' seemed wrong and completely hard to believe. I just couldn't imagine how easily and thoughtlessly one of the couples fell into bed with each other. And with another couple, I couldn't believe no one else has any inkling of what was happening. They were so obvious!I also found it ridiculous that anyone would involve their au pair in the most personal aspects of their life, trusting her with life altering secrets. And I found what she did with that trust hard to imagine too. When I used to have a nanny, we NEVER involved her in our personal matters. She was way to important to our children to ever put her in an uncomfortable position. It doesn't feel realistic.There were so many holes in the story but I have to say, the biggest, most unbelievable part was the final twist near the end. I don't want to give anything away, BUT the final explanation about who is who was just way too much. I rolled my eyes so much I thought they were going to roll right out of my head. The final chapters were a disappointment. :-(OVERALLThe best I can say is that I didn't hate it.

(no spoilers) I didn't SUPER hate the book but I didn't love it either. It's hard to explain what I mean when I say that I didn't love the fact that Laura's revelations were pretty unrealistic without spoiling anything, but if you've read this book you may understand what I mean. Just the way things "happened", if you will, didn't really seem realistic. Laura really got on my nerves by the end of the book. She pretty much ruined so many things for many people. Understanding to a point but I just saw her as being super selfish of a character. Although her chapters were far more engaging than Seraphine's. Also the family dynamic gets so confusing by the end; numerous times as I was reading I had to remind myself who was related to who, etc. It's just a weird situation. Definitely not a suspenseful read

What would make a mother commit suicide immediately after giving birth to twins? Therein lies the central theme of THE AU PAIR. Seraphine Mayes, after the sudden death of her father, finds a mysterious photograph while going through his possessions. The photo, taken on Seraphine’s birth day, depicts her happy family. But why is her mother holding only one infant, she wonders, and is it she or her twin brother?Thus begins the tale of family intrigue, most of which takes place on a large home by the sea. Will Seraphine’s discovery of Laura, the au pair, be the key to the mystery of the missing baby?Although this story is set only as early as 1991, it is reminiscent of Gothic fiction. The setting in Summerbourne, a massive seaside estate (as opposed to Winterbourne, the elegant London house), and the name “Seraphine”, together with hints of witches and faeries, are counterintuitive to a modern day mystery. I couldn’t get invested in the characters, who were largely unsympathetic to me. I was curious enough to read to the end, but I felt no empathy toward anyone.The character development is robust, and I like the writing style. The story, especially the ending, is too fantastical for me.

I started reading this book and couldn't put it down because the characters were so interesting and I wanted to know what happened to them. I thought about the book when I wasn't reading it and tried to puzzle out the central mystery. I especially was drawn into Laura's narrative. I kept thinking about what could have happened to make a mother kill herself after giving birth to twins? This is not a spoiler because you find out Seraphine and Danny are twins whose mother killed herself on the day of their birth in the first chapter. I actually thought of a very implausible reason and discarded it because I could not believe Laura could do that. Then, that is what happened and my enjoyment of the book evaporated. I went from loving the book to thinking it was ridiculous.

The Au Pair is a story full of twists and turns in a dreamy Oceanside setting that captures you from the first chapters. How is everyone connected? Who knows the truth? I literally couldn’t put it down and days later, I can’t stop thinking about it. Amazing!

This book was confusing in the first half mainly because it kept switching back and forth between 1991 and 2017. It covers the life of Laura, an au pair, who has a confusing life herself. When she is in charge of the baby, Edwin, while his mom is pregnant all seemed well. By the time you get half way through you know something is up and life gets tangled up.Seraphine and her twin brother, Danny are born and minutes later, Ruth their mom throws herself off a cliff. The village gossips, the au pair goes back to her home and it's not until years later when Seraphine's dad dies that she goes through his belongings and starts to uncover photos of only one baby and questions are raised.Is she really a Summerbourne twin? If not, who is her mother? Seraphine will not stop until she has all the answers...even at the risk of breaking up her family.

About the Author

Dr. Jason Lisle is a Christian astrophysicist who writes and speaks on various topics relating to science and the defense of the Christian faith. The Introduction to Logic curriculum and teacher guide by Dr. Jason Lisle is a necessary addition to every Christian parent’s tool belt for preparing their children (and the parents themselves) to think more like God. I have desired an introduction to logic from a Christian worldview for a long time and Master Books and Dr. Jason Lisle have exceeded my expectations. I was so excited when I first saw this curriculum advertised and I was not disappointed. Dr. Lisle does a great job of covering the topic of logic in the first few chapters and then going into detail about informal fallacies. Each chapter of the student guide builds on the previous well in that Dr. Lisle reaches back to points from previous chapters to connect new thoughts in new chapters. At the end of each chapter, there is a quick reference to new terms with definitions as well. I also liked how the curriculum broke the informal fallacies into three main categories: Fallacy of Ambiguity, Fallacy of Presumption, and Fallacy of Relevance. Dr. Lisle spends ample, but focused time, on each type of fallacy within each category. Dr. Lisle even discusses the difference between informal and formal fallacies throughout the curriculum (the curriculum focuses on informal fallacies). The accompanying teacher guide is wonderful. There is over 150 pages of questions, quizzes, discussion points, and answers. The teacher guide really helps layout the course and to engage in discussion with the student. I believe the types of questions and topics posed in the teacher guide are from real world situations that really help prepare the student to identify illogical arguments and determine how to respond if they are led. I highly recommend this curriculum. I also thank Master Books for publishing this curriculum as it is much needed. I hope Master Books will publish “Part 2” about formal fallacies or “Putting Logic Into Practice” where it will focus more on role playing with the tools identified from this curriculum to make students more comfortable when led to confront others while defending the faith. Great job Dr. Jason Lisle and Master Books! Keep up the great, Godly work you are doing!

This is an amazing course! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I wanted it the moment I heard about it, for myself as well as my boys. I have been interested in the study of logic for some time now. I wanted a course that is Biblically based and this is steeped with apologetics and is Biblical based. I want my sons to complete this course when they are ready for it (they are only in elementary). Some things that I liked best…. Throughout the book the key words are highlighted. It instructs to make these words into flashcards. Worksheets provide exercises for finding fallacies and other concepts from the text. I really like the images and infographics. Also, the answers in the TG are so helpful. They give additional information than is required which is great for further discussion. I feel that the study of logic is very necessary at his time. I want to equip my children with the ability to stand up to false statements and be able to spot fallacies. I want them to think critically and be able to articulate their beliefs. I feel that this course with prepare them for life in the real world and be able to defend their faith with logic.

I was super excited to receive this as I have been looking for a way to introduce Logic in our home school.This study has short lessons and fantastic discussion points. It truly starts at the beginning - it is a true introduction.This course is recommended for 8th-12th and I tend to agree. I do think the teacher would benefit from reading the text through prior to beginning with their student to aid in discussion.There is a Teacher's Guide that accompanies this text - it is not necessary, but it is very useful. It contains an overview of the course, daily schedule, worksheets, and answer key.Overall, I think this is a well-done, thoughtful approach to logic. And, of course, holding to the standards of Master Books, it is thoroughly rooted in Scripture.

For those who might be anxious about studying logic, have no fear! Written from a Biblical worldview, introduction to Logic: Informal Fallacies does a fine job of bringing you up to speed and encouraging you in learning more. This curriculum is simple and easy to grasp, and it is a good starting point for young learners or those new to logic. The lessons are short, of benefit, and offer great discussion points. We cannot begin to express how much we are enjoying the lessons and how much we’re learning.It’s fantastic!

Read through this curriculum and decided to use it for my children next school year. I thought it would pair perfectly with the "Preparation to College Writing" they are taking.My hopes is this will not only keep them from committing the falacies taught, but also help them to recognize when they here them in an argument.I love how they relate all teaching to Biblical truth.Each corresponding chapter in the teacher guide/workbook (available at publisher's website) comprises a chapter review, short answer section, and a varied mix asking to fallacies.I hope the kids get as much out of this course as I did from the initial reading.

I loved Introduction to Logic! True to Master Books it is from a Biblical worldview and really drives home that God is the creator of knowledge and logic. As a newbie to a logic course this was a great intro that was easy to understand yet not lacking in content or quality. Thank you Master Books for another great curriculum that glorifies God above all else!

A Severe Mercy, by Sheldon Vanauken, is a heart-rending love story described by its author as "the spiritual autobiography of a love rather than of the lovers." I read A Severe Mercy when it first came out in 1977, and it impacted me deeply. I loved everything about it, his skill as an author and poet, his love for Davy and their growth together, his friendship with CS Lewis, and the profound way he shared his faith story. I wrote Sheldon a letter when I first read the book, and received a wonderful letter back, and it remains something I cherish. In the mid 1990's my wife and I went to Oxford, enjoyed evensong, and ate and had a couple of beers at The Eastgate, where Vanauken and Lewis had often met. Though I'm sure it's changed by now, at that time the decor was pleasingly dated. I've shared this book with many people over the years and haven't ever talked to anyone who didn't love it. Some years later Vanauken wrote that every book is at it's core a letter to friends, and his book more than most. It's nice to read it in that spirit, as he found joy in sharing his personal story with you, his friend.

Absolutely phenomenal book. Aside from being beautifully written and a great story, the book gives some great insight into the difficulties that accompany not only the loss of a spouse/loved one, but also the accompanying struggles with faith. Important for pretty much anybody living in our time. Highly recommend it.

I read this at the suggestion of a friend who knows me as an insatiable devotee of C.S. Lewis. Mr. Lewis is a great and interesting writer, but the various editions of this book with jackets screaming "18 LETTERS BY CS LEWIS (oh, and some book by a guy named Vanauken)" do it a terrible disservice. Vanauken's love story with his wife is profoundly interesting, their acquaintances in America and England fascinating on their own merits, and Vanauken's elegy to his wife is a heartbreaking masterpiece of catharsis. By most critical accounts, he was never again as great a writer as he is here, but A Severe Mercy stands firmly on its own as both great autobiography and spiritual memoir.

While first reading this book I thought it was a story of two young selfish people. But that is what most of us are when we begin life independently of parental figures. Then it began to unfold to a sweet love story. Comfortable and truthful (they thought) with one another. Then they "discovered" God. Truly a wonderful book. I am glad that Sheldon decided to put their story to paper. So many hours spent thinking about "things". I will cherish this book and perhaps reread.

I heard about this book on Easter Sunday 2010. My Pastor was preaching and used is as an illustration. I listened to him and wondered what kind of strength would be required for someone to lose his/ her spouse. Little did I know that that morning I had become a widow myself... my husband of 4 yrs had committed suicide. This book made me reevaluate my attitude toward priorities and the place of God in my life. It got me through the most difficult time of my life.The author pours out his heart to us, it is as if you are there, with him and Jean, basking in the love they feel for each other. The events after they met Lewis are vividly described and give the reader a feel of that athmospere from times past. The book was written in times where the publishers were very selective of what would be published, the editing is superb. I recommend it to anyone, it is a book about love, life and the place of God in both.
