Review

"[A] new book applying the lessons of social psychology and behavioral economics to everything from health care to climate maintenance. The authors of Nudge . . . agree with economists who'd like to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by imposing carbon taxes or a cap-and-trade system, but they think people need extra guidance."―John Tierney, New York Times"Two University of Chicago professors sketch a new approach to public policy that takes into account the odd realities of human behavior, like the deep and unthinking tendency to conform. Even in areas―like energy consumption―where conformity is irrelevant. Thaler has documented the ways people act illogically."―Barbara Kiviat, Time"A manifesto for using the recent behavioral research to help people, as well as government agencies, companies and charities, make better decisions."―David Leonhardt, The New York Times Magazine"Engaging, enlightening."―George Scialabba, Boston Sunday Globe"Sunstein and Thaler are very persuasive. . . . Great fun to read."―Dahlia Lithwick, Slate"An essential read . . . an entertaining book. . . . The book isn't only humorous, it's loaded with good ideas that financial-service executives, policy makers, Wall Street mavens, and all savers can use."―John F. Wasik, Boston Globe"An engaging and insightful tour through the evidence that most human beings don't make decisions in the way often characterized in elementary economics textbooks, along with a rich array of suggestions for enabling many of us to make better choices, both for ourselves and for society. . . . The conceptual argument is powerful, and most of the authors' suggestions are common sense at its best. . . . For that we should all applaud loudly."―Benjamin M. Friedman, New York Times Book Review"By a 'nudge,' Thaler and Sunstein mean a policy intervention into choice architecture that is easy and inexpensive to avoid and that alters people's behavior in a predictable way without forbidding any options or significantly changing an individual's economic incentives. . . . Thaler and Sunstein stress that if 'incentives and nudges replace requirements and bans, government will be both smaller and more modest.'"—George F. Will, Newsweek"Save the planet, save yourself. Do-gooders, policymakers, this one's for you."―Newsweek". . . an excellent rendition of how human beings view choices and make decisions."—Gurumurthy Kalyanaram & Sunanda Muralidharan, International Journal of Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Management Vol 5.4"As important a book as I've read in perhaps 20 years. It is a book that people interested in any aspect of public policy should read. It is a book that people interested in politics should read. It is a book that people interested in ideas about human freedom should read. It is a book that people interested in promoting human welfare should read."―Barry Schwartz, The American Prospect"Nudge helps us understand our weaknesses, and suggests savvy ways to counter them."―Emily Bobrow, New York Observer"This Poor Richard's Almanack for the 21st century . . . shares both the sagacity and the witty and accessible style of its 18th century predecessor."―Benjamin Gregg, Law and Politics Book Review"As bookstore shelves fill up with works by parlor-room thinkers who would entertain us with their economic nonsense, an entertaining book that also deeply informs could get lost in the shuffle. That book is Nudge. . . . An interesting work. . . . It speaks of how conditions can be changed and perhaps improved by "nudging" people. Rather than "beating up" on people, subtly nudge them. Fascinating reading and very provocative. Is nudging good? Or manipulative? The authors, Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein, faculty at the University of Chicago, define a "nudge" as (Page 6): ". . .any aspect of the choice architecture that alters people's behavior in a predictable way without forbidding any options or significantly changing their economic incentives." Indeed, they define their perspective as "libertarian paternalism." They believe in freedom but also wish to use "nudges" to induce people to improve their health, and live longer and happier. One simple example? Has any male ever used a urinal with a fly painted onto it? This simple nudge reduces "spillage" by 40% as males involuntarily try to hit the "target." In the process, there is a benefit, less smelliness and messiness in the restroom. The book applies the nudge argument to investments, health, school choice, organ donation, the environment, marriage, and so on. In each case, they try to show how nudges and libertarian paternalism can improve the quality of life of individuals as well as providing social benefits.Questions do arise, as the authors themselves admit. Is this a manipulative approach? Do we subtly manipulate people into doing things that they might not voluntarily wish to do? Thaler and Sunstein address these issues. Each reader will have to determine how well they succeed. A provocative and fascinating work, well worth reading.

The point is very clear. We all have preconditioned manners of making decisions and instead of having to choose from thousands of options it makes more sense to nudge us to a more common ground than to leave us confused and frustrated. This of course is on condition that there is pure transparency of all the options. If you have ever read any books about psychology or studied the subject or have read Daniel Kahneman’s book Thinking Fast and Slow, than this book will not provide you a lot of new insight. It looks at a lot of old and some recent researches about how people who think they’re making rational decisions are in reality not and have pretty predictable decision patterns. The book then goes on to recommend how society could be better if we followed some type of Paternal Libertarianism where the ones providing choses like Insurance companies or government services nudge persons to make smarter decisions while being transparent of all the options and not hiding any of them. I agree with them almost 100%. Most of their suggestions and examples make sense as long as the ones nudging are 100% transparent. If you’re anything like me, you will say the book is just okay and you will not be blown away by any Wow moments. So you can either read the book or save time and just speak to someone who read the book and have a nice long discussion with them.

Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness by Richard H. Thaler and‎ Cass R. Sunstein has a simple premise. Unlike classical economic theory, where people are fully rational and always do things in their best interest, we are really lazy, uninformed, and unmotivated. We make bad decision because we lack information, or space out, or are too stupid to investigate what descisions will make our lives better.Intuitively, this view appeals to me. One example: create online retirement forms with a default setting which generally benefit employees, rather than no setting at all. Most people don't really understand their retirement plans, if they even have one. So make their laziness work for them.Of course, the “Libertarian Paternalism” proposed in this work is problematic. Who makes the choices that we get to choose from? Can’t "they" rig the system for their benefit and not ours?Despite this, I think the author’s view of human nature is sound, and can lead to more intelligent discussions about what we, as a species and individuals in that species, can hope to accomplish.

No wonder Richard Thaler's work won him the Nöbel Prize in Economics! Built on the earlier work founding Behavioral Economics by Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tvarsky which de-throned the "Rational Actor" model of humans in Classical Economics, Kahneman and Tvarsky, joined by Paul Slovic, showed human thinking is hard-wired in evolution, beset by Heuristics and Biases which are provably non-rational. They answer the question often provoked by observations of others clearly acting against their self-interest. There has been 35 years of continuing research in this area, a Nöbel for Kahneman, even showing that Capuchin monkeys are hard-wired native economic thinkers and choosers. We act, as evolution indicates, for action in the short term, primarily in the lower level, fast thinking brain and with heuristics/algorithms sufficient to meet the test of "Probably Approximately Correct", with book of this name by Leslie Valiant. Humans are not randomly irrational, but predictably irrational, which is what makes The Nudge work effectively.Thaler gives us an alternative to formal control systems for humans based on rules, laws, behavioral/operant conditioning, "shoulds, oughts, musts". Humans ignore or rebel against the rules, and deny consequences for short term gains.Thaler's "Nudge" is the alternative, assuming people will act in their self-interest without depending or using rationality or reason. Thaler shows in his reserach and presents in his book how to shape choice using the newly discovered laws of predictable irrationality, or choice shaping.

So despite my opinion of this card deck I still have recommed this card deck to many clients and friends.I recently bought this card deck for my friend Jason and will include his opinion on this card deck later on in this review. Some of the cards in the card deck are Visualize Success,Crystals,Fairies,Twin Flame,Shield Yourself and more. This card deck has one of more angels on it and it should because it's called Angel Therapy. Also another reason it's called this is because it includes meditations to specific archangels which is what I like about this card deck. This card deck also includes chakra cards as well which you don't really see in Doreen's other card decks at least the oracle card decks anyway,so that is another reason this card deck is special. If you like Doreen Virtue and looking for an angel card deck that includes angel meditations in the enclosed booklet this is the card deck for you.

It's been nearly two decades since I've been drawn to angels with the intensity that I'm being so now. This deck is just one of the tools I'm using to tap into that energy, but it is a powerful one yet gentle at the same time. The art work is bright and colorful with an playful, loving tone. I do daily readings for myself with this deck and each card resonates strongly and has been spot on for the day. The explanations in the guidebook are helpful and include action steps to draw even more of the energy of the card into your day. There are other New-Age concepts used such as chakras and crystals. I don't find that to be a problem as I'm familiar with and very comfortable with all the concepts presented. I do believe that we're drawn to the right tools at any given moment, so this won't be a deck that inspires everyone in the same way and there are also times when I'm just as moved by much darker imagery and messages. At this time though, this deck is food for the soul.

I bought this deck on a whim. Didn't read the description actually just liked the cover of the cards + box design. Apparently this deck is good for those that want to work with archangels. I'm not interested in working with archangels, as my spirituality is very feminine -goddess based and I like working with my guardian angels-guides - which in my mind don't include archangels. I'm not impressed with the artwork in this deck preferring some of her other decks like crystal angels and angel answers- which have stunning artwork. But this deck in my opinion is good for doing career-life direction readings mostly and past life sort of questions. I'm using it for those matters specifically. Its an okay deck overall, and good to have in one's collection. If you feel especially drawn to it, then you'll probably love it. I'm just not feeling it..

I didn't have much to expect due to this being my first deck. I felt the booklet it came with gave a great quick start guide to clear and set the cards. The doscriptions for each oracle card is awesome, not too lengthy, enough to give you a good idea as well as actions steps. My daughter loves the pictures and it was able to get her curious in the Angels, which is cool I think. I feel like I get very a curate readings and I can always find positive guidence. I plan to buy more cards, these definitely sold me. I'm very happy! These cards give me a sense of peace, calm, and serentity.

I am studying angels & their gift to us. These cards are high quality as is all of Doreen Virtue's cards. As I am also studying on being an energy/light healer this is a perfect companion. When I feel the time is right to begin working with people these cards will be a plus to show them their reading with the beautiful imagery. It will help them remember their reading aiding in their healing.

I really like this set of Angel Therapy Oracle Cards, and am finding that for whatever reason, of the various other Doreen Virtue cards I have and have found very useful and enjoyable to work with through the years, this is the deck of cards that I have been using most often this year whether doing readings for others or for myself. Its messages feel especially supportive on many levels. Also, I find it very easy to tie together the messages of each card in this particular deck as they come up in a reading. For years I most often did readings with another of Doreen's cards: Healing With The Angels Oracle Cards...beautiful messages encouraging deeper insight, inspiration, hope, and often bringing messages of confirmation and synchronicity. I have a feeling that most people who choose to buy the Angel Therapy Oracle cards will find them also a useful addition to any other oracle cards they may have...I know I certainly do. :) Peace, Joy, Love and Kindest Blessings To All ~Lisa xoxo

I got these to read fortunes at a Halloween party. Absolutely beautiful Deck, great quality and beautiful illustrations. I really like that the meaning is printed on each card and the little book that comes with them makes it easy to get a full detailed explanation into the cards. I have done four readings so far and everyone I have read for was totally amazed with them. Would highly recommend.

I have Doreen's book Angel Therapy. I decided to get the cards to try them out. It was a great buy. I am a very sensitive intuitive person to energy and beings around me. When using these cards I felt and saw the Archangels work on me. The Archangel Michael cards are very powerful in releasing toxic energy from your life. One card talks about cutting cords that are attached to other people which are brought on by fear and other unhealthy emotions. I did this and felt the Archangel behind me pulling the cords from my back and other areas. An immediate relief from stress was felt. Not everyone will get the same results. It will vary depending on how sensitive you are but you will feel better in the end. These cards validated that Angels are real.

Esra's book is organized brilliantly. With the sections separated into push, power, people, and purpose, I was able to easily take each piece of advice from the entrepreneurs and apply it to a different aspect of my life. Her writing is raw and reflective. With her own experiences woven throughout, I was able to get to know Esra's inner struggles, and how she found the strength to continue regardless of the naysayers and things that could have held her back.I found so much wise/PRACTICAL wisdom in this novel, and I am already planning to utilize the copious amounts of insider advice these women gave in their interviews. I've read a lot of books about entrepreneurship and using your resources to propel ahead of the rest, but this novel excelled especially in providing me with a sense of motivation/call to action to reexamine my own accomplishments and goals for the future. Well done, Esra. I truly enjoyed every page of this book and was unable to put it down until I finished it. Overall incredibly inspiring read. --Danielle Tobb

I read this book to gain a perspective...not only for me, but for my adult daughter who is a budding entrepreneur. This is not the most skillfully crafted book I've read, but the message is clear. Esra did a wonderful job of exposing many challenges, then laying out practical solutions. Gathering and sharing information is learning, but when the information is based on experience...it crosses the bridge to wisdom. This book shares both, thanks to the diligent efforts of the author...great work!

Female Entrepreneurship is vital for the world to succeed and Esra does a great job of showing how that can happen with her 3-step approach.

A truly fantastic book that is inspiring and beyond insightful!! It is beautifully written so you can draw comparisons and really engage with the stories being told. I would highly recommend this book, as you will not find a more motivating and inspiring read this summer and I cannot wait to see what else Ozturk has to offer.

Truly inspiring read! I enjoyed every story!

I really related to this book, especially being a female trying to find myself in a male-dominated industry. Ozturk's book is incredibly insightful and I really believe educational to any woman wanting to break into whatever industry she sets her mind to.

I Just received this book today and it's incredible. I read the first page and the author really demonstrates a real perspective of all the struggles and issues that arise in the business world. How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big: Kind of the Story of My Life, by Scott Adams

Review

“Adams has a funny, refreshingly considered set of ideas about how to find success—and what that success will look like when one gets there.”—Kirkus Reviews“Scott Adams has drawn nearly 9,000 Dilbert cartoons since the strip began, in 1989, and his cynical take on management ideas, the effectiveness of bosses, and cubicle life has affected the worldview of millions. But he built his successful career mainly through trial and error—a whole lot of error, to be exact.—Harvard Business Review

Enjoyed this "how to succeed" tome especially since he acknowledges that much of what happens in life comes down to luck and timing - but the more skills you develop, the more things you try, the more effort you put into life, the luckier you seem to get. Thought his ideas on gleaning what one can from any failure - new ideas, new people, new approaches - certainly improve the odds for success. I was also fascinated by his medical condition as related to the loss of his speaking ability. Interesting battle and a lot of insight in that situation as well. A bit repetitive and simplistic in places but a fun read.

The book was a joy to readHis key ideas are easy to follow because he keeps it simple and Scott Adams writes in a clear and witty mannerFor example the chapter on applying a system vs setting goals and trying to follow them was worth the price of the book many times over for me (and this is reinforced through the book). In his own words goals are a reach-it-and-be-done situation (where you are often waiting to achieve it someday in the future) whereas a system is something you do on a regular or daily basis with a reasonable expectation that doing so will get you to a better place in life. Wanting better health or wanting to lose 10 kg are goals. Being active everyday is a system. One is tied to another - but goals people are fighting the feeling of discouragement at each turn and the systems people are feeling good every-time they apply their system.I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone smart and weary of reading tired cliches in the self-help genre. The book is a breath of fresh air!

I read this book on the recommendation of a friend who is a life coach. She believes in a "systems approach" ranging from daily organization all the way to getting one's life priorities in order. The book was written as a casual life story with odds and ends thrown in. It wasn't one of those with a series of life-changing revelations about success, followed by a list of changes you MUST make, shifting to wondering where to begin, and ending with nagging disappointment at not reaching ANY of those big goals. Not only was it an easy, conversational read, but I was able to NAIL the results according to the point of the book.As Adams says, you shouldn't take life advice from a cartoonist, but I did. I would enjoy reading more of his books as he is an interesting and outside-the-box thinker. Though it's not an earth-shattering-revelation tome, I give it 5 stars for ease and likeliness of success.

This is a solid book with useful advice for everyone.Unfortunately, though, it drops the ball on the central premise of the book: Goals Are Bad vs. Systems Are Good. After finishing this book I was left with a lot of questions about Systems:- What are they exactly?- What are the components of a good system (do's and don'ts)?- How are they different than a project? While I understand that it can be a bit subjective, it would've been helpful if Scott spelled out "For Idiots" some of his systems. He alludes to them in the last bit about staying active, where his system allows "slippage". Again, having more visibility into the specifics of one or more of his systems (real or hypothetical examples) with some detail behind it would have made the book much better. At issue is while I accept the premise that Systems are Better than Goals, I've got no clarity on how to go about setting up systems for myself. That was the big disappointment with the book. Otherwise it's plenty entertaining, and certainly gets to second or third base, but sadly isn't a home run.I plan to copy / paste this into a tweet for @ScottAdamsSays (who is well worth following) in the hopes that he can direct me to some blog posts or respond to my question about.

I had this pre-ordered after reading the WSJ article. It came yesterday around noon and I finished it at 4:00 AM this morning, with few breaks within that time frame. It wasn't the plan for my day, but I don't regret changing my day around to read this book.I would say any book that holds my interest like that deserves a 5-start rating, though there are a few things that I'd tweak to get it closer to perfection. My official score, being a tough grader, is a 4.6/5.0 and I wouldn't resell it for twice what I paid ... especially now that it's fully highlighted and sticky-noted throughout (which makes the book more valuable to me now because I've identified the portions that spoke directly to me and my own experiences).I really enjoyed Scott's independent thinking and challenges of conventional wisdom throughout this book, especially as it contrasts with other self-help, goal-setting or business advice books. For instance, choosing an opportunity for which one has some sort of inherent advantage rather than blindly prescribing "you can do whatever you want" appeals to my pragmatic mind. I have wrestled with this exact conclusion within the past year as I work through my own list of new ideas and opportunities, so I enjoyed that perspective as it resonates with my own thinking.I really enjoyed the thinking on pg. 40, which is fully highlighted, less perhaps a couple sentences. This is where Scott talks about his mental model of not wanting to sell his time due to limited upside and finding a product that is infinitely scalable. I appreciated this candidness, which allows the reader to better understand the later "luck" and apparent rapid success of Dilbert. It's clear to me, Scott's success was a lifetime in the making, the product of continued experimentation and the tenacity to stay at it. This whole book was helpful to me, as my model is exactly the same and the road to success is anything but certain when you're placing bets on what the public wants. Having a system that embraces and anticipates failure, in particular, is an essential tool to avoid letting temporary results bleed over into derailing what could be a highly successful longer-term career choice.Pg. 88, talking about when to quit and how successful ventures often have SOME element of success early-on also resonated with me, and is another page that is more yellow than white after reading this book. These comments also directly resonated with some false-starts I've had, where I correctly pulled the plug after minimal investment of time because things just did not feel right almost from the get-go. I felt poorly about pulling the red handle so early while I was ejecting, but now looking back I know I was practicing the exact type of discipline one needs to practice when trying totally new things. Plan on a good chunk of your initial tests, ideas and hypotheses being off the mark and blindly plowing time and effort at soft-starts is a recipe for disaster. One of my favorite quotes in the book is "Persistence is useful, but there's no point in being an idiot about it." That got a "lol!"I also appreciated Scott's thoughts on useful core skills, especially psychology. This topic has become more and more interesting to me after sluffing through Pscych 202 in college, when it seems like a diversion from more useful topics. I now see how important that is, and also how little I know in this universe of knowledge. The terms page of psychological topics is a lifetime of potential study in itself, so the book leads you to new domains of study if you so choose.Scott urges the reader to not accept anything at face value, and my personal model embraces a good chunk of this body of wisdom with a few of my own twists. Any book that holds your interest and gives you new things to think about is worth owning and reading, in my opinion. This book satisfies that criteria with ease. Thank you for writing it and good luck with the book.

A good introduction to Bonhoeffer's local church work. I find my self going to these sermons before using the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works: Reader's Edition--not as scholarly but easier to read for daily use.

Review

"I couldn't wait to review this project, and it did not disappoint. I have been a longtime follower of Jenny’s blog and Facebook page and LOVE them! Her real talk approach to parenting makes you feel like you’re not failing to live up to some unrealistic standard. Even with her blunt honesty you can see her deep love for her children throughout the book. It’s a great reminder that we ALL go through times like this, and we’re all doing the best we can. Thank you, Jenny, for bringing humor and creativity to this life we call mommyhood!" –Dawn Recor, blogger of Diary of a Not So Wimpy Mom"Getting shockingly emotional over soup commercials, treating solo grocery-store-trips like tropical vacations, staying up and watching kiddie cartoons hours after her kids have gone to bed…and, of course, compiling a blackmail album for when her boys get old enough to date? Jenny Schoberl’s Kids Are Turds is a ridiculously funny and heartfelt chronicle of what it means to be a mother, and whether falling into parental stereotypes is something to fight—or something to embrace with all your heart." –Dressler Parsons, Student-Tutor.com"If anyone can prove that you’re never too old for bathroom humor, it’s Jenny Schoberl. Lock yourself in the bathroom with Kids Are Turds and laugh away . . . likely while your own kids are being turds!" —Leanne Shirtliffe, author of Don't Lick the Minivan and Mommyfesto"Moms everywhere, rejoice! Kids Are Turds gives you permission to whine into your (much-needed) wine as you flop down in exhaustion after another day of wiping up the unmentionable mess you know will magically reappear tomorrow. Laugh it off, ladies—let Jenny show you how." —Karen Moline, coauthor of the New York Times bestseller, Sh*tty Mom: The Parenting Guide for the Rest of Us

Having 2 young sons, I bought this book thinking it would be some fun and light weekend reading. Not only is this book easy to read, but it is freaking hysterical, super relatable, and brutally honest. I hate parenting books that make you feel guilty if you aren't the perfect parent, and Jenny does such an amazing job letting you know that it is okay to not only make mistakes, but to sometimes be just an "okay" parent. Her charming and witty way of storytelling will draw you in and hold you there throughout the entire book.I also recommend following her blog, Holdin' Holden, if you want a regular dose of laughter.

Jenny is hilarious and doesn't leave any mommy-stone unturned in her super funny 2nd book. I religiously follow her blog and look forward to the daily funnies that come my way via Holdin Holden on Facebook. I appreciate the honesty and true to life stories and can't wait for what's next from this local Momma of Holden and Parker - you won't be disappointed!

Jenny brings you in her life in a very real and hilarious way. She reminds you that you're not alone in feeling crazy through the journey of motherhood. That it ok to be very best "ok-est" mom in the world at time, and sometimes it's ok to call your kid and Awhile. She normalizes the everyday crazies you feel at times, and let's you know that you're not alone. One of the hardest parts of parenting is feeling that you are failing because sometimes you just want to run, scream, call them A-holes, laugh at them, or whatever the case might be. She let's you know not only is ok but almost all mom's are thinking the exact same thing. You're reminded that wanting to sell them on the black market with a zero return policy is perfectly normal, but at the end of every day after they are all knocked out cold that you wouldn't change a thing because they like you are perfectly imperfect. And that is ok.

Jenny tells it like it is! It's nice to know that all of the crazy things that happen as a parent doesn't just happen to me! Thankfully she is brave enough to share with the rest of us the wild world of parenting so we know we're doing ok. Parenting is not easy and she lets you know that your not alone in your thoughts and feelings about it. Thanks again Jenny for making me feel better about parenting! Another great read!

Jenny's first book took me by surprise. You just don't see HONEST parenting books. So when this second book was released, I knew I would be getting a "say it how it is" funny look at parenting and life. I was not disappointed. This book isn't just for parents, it is for anyone that spends time around kids!! It is always nice to know that other parents struggle with some of the same things I do!! Misery loves company and all!! This is a must read! Just get it and read it already, you won't be disappointed!

As usual, Jenny does not disappoint! This book is hilarious, I made myself limit the number of chapters read each day just so I could savor it longer, lol If you enjoy laughing your butt off then you should buy this book. If you like potty-mouthed parenting humor (and who the heck doesn''t) you MUST buy this book as well as "Musings of a 20-something mom." I have had my husband and kiddos look at me as though I have grown 2 additional heads because I keep laughing out loud as a I read. This book is worth far more than the current sale price, get one for you and for everyone on your Christmas list!

I had just started following her blog on Facebook about a year ago and let me tell you she is hilarious. It's like she is writing my life that is filled with the daily struggles of a three and five year old. I can identify with every word she wrote from beginning to end. I too have to sneak chocolates or other goodies like a sweet ninja so don't get caught! I highly recommend her book for every parent will hilariously identify with every situation that she writes about. Get it for you won't be sorry!!

Her book is hilarious! As good if not better than her first book. It's comforting to read about another mom who isn't quite sure if she's doing it right but is most certainly enjoying the ride! And being able to read about another moms trials as she's raising her kids and throwing humor into the mix makes your trials seem manageable if you just look for the humor. It may not be right away but it'll come to you!

Death in the Air: The True Story of a Serial Killer, the Great London Smog, and the Strangling of a City, by Kate Winkler Dawson

Review

"Death in the Air by Kate Winkler Dawson is a fascinating, beautifully researched, and compulsively readable book, which tells the entwined stories of the Great London Smog of 1952 and a serial killer, John Reginald Christie, who exploited the fog as a cloak for murder. This is a portrait of London at one of its darkest and most desperate times. Not since The Devil in the White City has a book told such a harrowing tale." --Douglas Preston, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Monster of Florence and The Lost City of the Monkey God   "I was seven, and living in London, when these two dreadful and murderous events uncoiled, and I--asthmatic as a result--remember them still. It seems to me that only an outsider, a non-Londoner, could possibly bring them so vividly, so excruciatingly and so unflinchingly back to life. Kate Winkler Dawson has done the history of my city a great service, and she is to be commended for telling a terrible tale memorably and brilliantly." --Simon Winchester, New York Times bestselling author of The Professor and the Madman   "Tendrils of sickening fog creep everywhere in this book, and terror lurks in the shadows. Dawson skillfully weaves these two events into a substantial narrative that will appeal to all types of readers." --Library Journal (starred review)   "How have we forgotten this incredible story? A deadly environmental disaster visited upon modern London, a serial killer stalking women at its zenith--this is a tale dying to be told. Death in the Air is a stunning debut by a writer you will be hearing about for years to come. It's just a great book.'' --Bryan Burrough, New York Times bestselling author of Public Enemies and Barbarians at the Gate   "Kate Winkler Dawson's Death in the Air: The True Story of a Serial Killer, The Great London Smog, and the Strangling of a City is a stellar examination of a turbulent time in the city's history. . . . Dawson's background in documentaries and journalism makes this journey more than just a retelling of the facts. She tracked down people who lived it, and now readers will vividly experience that period as well." --Associated Press   "Ms. Dawson, a journalist and documentary producer, is an assiduous researcher...her portraits of the ordinary people confronted by the depredations of the fog and Christie are moving. Ms. Dawson cogently argues that the Conservative government's response to the crisis was shameful: It did everything it could, seemingly, to cover up the extent of the catastrophe and avoid addressing the emergency." --Wall Street Journal "Evocative . . . vividly atmospheric . . . The narratives add up to a grim, Dickensian portrait of postwar London: broke, grimy, dejected, deranged around the edges, and gasping for breath." --Publishers Weekly   "Dawson deftly weaves the tales together in an engrossing narrative that reads like a thriller.... readers will remain hooked on this compelling story and will eagerly await Dawson's next book." --Kirkus   "Just when you think true crime can't get more interesting, here comes Kate Dawson with her imaginatively conceived and meticulously researched tale about Reg Christie, the fastidious, soft-voiced London clerk who embarks on a vicious killing spree in 1952 just as a deadly fog descends on London. But Death in the Air is hardly another study of a depraved serial killer. It's also a riveting history of London in the years after World War II--a city beset by political cover ups and misguided police investigations. Dawson's ability to weave together so many separate strands of one story is simply magnificent." --Skip Hollandsworth, author of The Midnight Assassin: The Hunt for America's First Serial Killer   "Kate Winkler Dawson has a born storyteller's gift for building suspense and momentum and a keen eye for telling details, and her narrative poses a powerful moral question: who's the worse killer--a madman who strangles seven women and a baby, or government officials whose staggering indifference allows thousands to die in the great London smog of 1952? Dawson captures the whole sad mess in a heartbreaking, page-turning account that almost literally grips you by the throat as the government, the police, the press, and the medical profession all fail in their fundamental duty to preserve and protect the city's most vulnerable residents." --Glenn Frankel, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author of High Noon and The Searchers   "A deranged maniac plays Fleet Street's reporters like a fiddle at the same time that an industrial-age climate disaster explodes into a full-blown humanitarian crisis. Richly detailed and shrewdly told, Kate Winkler Dawson's Death in the Air is as suspenseful as it is chillingly relevant." --Robert Kolker, New York Times bestselling author of Lost Girls   "A killer fog. A killer loose amidst it. Dawson does what skilled storytellers do: drops you in a London peopled by finely etched characters and keeps you turning pages through the twist and turns of a harrowing case." --Joe Drape, New York Times bestselling author of American Pharoah and Our Boys   "A London peasouper hangs over the city as a serial killer stalks its streets! This is a true tale of criminal violence against the backdrop of one of the worst environmental disasters of all time, one that led to the death of 12,000 people. It is a narrative that has relevance to the world's pollution problems of today and is also an engrossing read." --Christine L. Corton, author of London Fog: The Biography   "For five days in December of that year, London was blanketed by a yellow toxic vapor that smothered its inhabitants. Journalist Kate Winkler Dawson has written an intriguing book about this silent disaster, which was borne out of a perfect storm of freak weather patterns and environmental ignorance. . . . The lessons for the present, Dawson suggests, are as clear as the air in front of our eyes." --Maureen Corrigan, "Fresh Air" "What's scarier: A murderous madman (now known to be John Reginald Christie) or an environmental disaster?" --Los Angeles Times   "Death in the Air is an enlightening look at two lesser known but important events in British history, for both had far-reaching consequences." --Minneapolis Star Tribune   "Deeply researched and densely atmospheric." --New York Times Book Review "A gripping read that illuminates two dark crimes: The political scandal of London's Great Smog of 1952, which killed an estimated 12,000 people; and the frightening deeds of a human killer both demented and mundane." --Dallas Morning News   "What's great about Death in the Air is not just its stunning premise, but also its deep reach into the life of London in the mid-twentieth century. It's a wonderful read. Welcome to the metaphysics of fog." --S. C. Gwynne, New York Times bestselling author of Empire of the Summer Moon and Rebel Yell   "Dawson has reached deep into the past and pulled forth a spellbinding, darkly gothic tale of two serial killers--only one of which was human. Death in the Air surprised me, entranced me, and changed the way I see one of the most urgent issues facing the world today." --Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich, author of The Fact of a Body   "This dark and disturbing tale of murder, deception, and killer smog in 1952 London serves as a vivid warning about what can happen when we destroy the environment, systems break down, and, well, a couped up, dormant serial killer feels the need to act out his twisted fantasies--again." --Dean King, bestselling author of Skeletons on the Zahara and The Feud   "In 1952, post-World War II London was battling more than reconstruction, and Kate Winkler Dawson's Death in the Air: The True Story of a Serial Killer, The Great London Smog, and the Strangling of a City is a stellar examination of a turbulent time in the city's history. . . . Dawson's background in documentaries and journalism makes this journey more than just a retelling of the facts. She tracked down people who lived it, and now readers will vividly experience that period as well." --Associated Press   "In her debut book Death in the Air, University of Texas journalism lecturer and Austin native Kate Winkler Dawson weaves together two terrifying events: the Great Smog that settled over London for five days in 1952 and the gruesome discovery that a serial killer, John Reginald Christie, had been living coincidentally in the city at the same time. Dawson spent two years researching the book, delving into everything from autopsy reports and trial transcripts to eyewitness accounts by people who survived the fog." --Austin Monthly   "Journalist Dawson writes the parallel, shocking histories of the suffocating smog that menaced London, ultimately killing thousands, in December 1952, and a serial killer's salacious murders and trial the following year. Focusing on the powerful press' response to both killers and offering food for thought on what constitutes crime, responsibility, and progress, Dawson delves into heated parliamentary debates between Churchill's Conservative cabinet and Laborite agitators; first-person accounts from doctors, policemen, and other smog survivors; court records; and Christie's own, jaw-dropping account of his murders." --Booklist

This book interweaves accounts of the likely murders committed by serial killer John Reginald Christie with the blanketing, sulfuric fog that hit London in 1952 and the tragedy the fog brought into the lives of some individuals. Author Kate Dawson alternates the fabrics of these three grim and grimy narratives, so you get a patch of this – then a patch of that. Sometimes this technique might leave the reader feeling a little frustrated, dangling on the end of one too many cliffhangers, as in the old “Perils of Pauline” silent film shorts. Christie seems about to strike – then we get switched to a debate in Parliament about how the fog's affects could be mitigated. The fog and the Christie murders don't really have anything to do with each other. Christie didn't commit his murders under cover of the fog. But together, these reports do paint an interesting picture of the struggles of post-war England. This is a good book to have in your library, but I feel it could have used a little more editing. Here are some of the details of style and content that tripped me up a bit:There's a lot of repetition here. Several dozen times we read how the fog was “creeping, insinuating, curling in” everywhere. After about the twentieth time of reading that the smog was slithering its way through every crack and crevice, I felt like calling out, “Enough already! I get it!”Dawson oddly uses first names when writing about some people, then changes to the more formal, distancing use of last names when she writes about other people. It's disturbing to see Christie consistently and cozily referred to as “Reg.” It's as if someone writing about the life and crimes of John Wayne Gacy continuously referred to him as “John-boy.” It conveys the wrong affect. But Dawson's decisions about how to refer to all the individuals in the book are puzzling. Policeman are always given their designating initials (DCI, PC, etc.) and then are referred to by their last names. Doctors are most often referred to by their first names. Liberal MP's such as Labour Party leader Norman Dodds are almost always referred to as “Norman,” whereas Conservative MP Harold Macmillan is always “Macmillan.”There is perhaps a somewhat unwarranted Liberal bias here. Conservative leaders Macmillan, Churchill, and the up-and-coming Margaret Thatcher, are portrayed as the bad guys. Dawson does end up making a case that the Tory Government's attitude toward the thousands of smog deaths was cavalier and indifferent. But it's hard to see what anyone could have been done in the moment. As Dawson herself admits, Britain was forced to export its good coal to help pay its staggering national debt in the wake of the War. That left only the dirty “nutty slack” to be made available to the majority of householders to use as coal fuel.I wish Dawson had spent more time describing the weather conditions that contributed to this deadly smog. I would have liked to better understand how “anticyclones' played a roll – how cold weather capped the smoke being generated by the myriad coal-burning homes and industries.I also sort of wish Dawson had used this book as the occasion to do a little sleuthing on her own rather than just reporting the crimes in straight, police-blotter fashion. Indeed it seems possible there were some threads of clues she might have followed. For example, in one of several slightly confusing flashback accounts given here, Dawson tells about the alleged crimes committed by another inhabitant of 10 Rillington place – the either hapless or vicious (depending on how you look at it) Tim Evans who lived with his wife and baby in the flat above Christie. Several years before the worst spate of Christie's killings, the Evans wife and baby had been found dead in the building's wash-house. There followed a long series of contradictory confessions and recantations by everyone involved. However, Tim Evans ended on the note of accusing Christie of having killed his wife and baby. When prosecution showed how the dead baby had been found with a striped tie wrapped around its neck, Evans denied ever having owned a striped tie, and it seems that at the moment at least, this part of his testimony was taken at face value. However, there starring us in the face in Dawson's photo section of the book – we see Tim Evans standing with his wife and baby in happier times, wearing a vividly striped tie! It's the Bruno Magli shoes all over again. Finally, I wish Dawson had given more credit to the movie 10 Rillington Place. She dismisses it in a footnote as an “advocacy piece.” Actually, I found it to be a riveting work with brilliant acting by Richard Attenborough and John Hurt. However right or wrong the movie is in its stand about the guilt of Tim Evans, it does bring Christie searingly to life, in all his sinister, suggestive softness. But all the above are relatively minor faults in this generally good book. Dawson transports us back to the life of many average working people everywhere in the 1950's – with the coal chutes - the still numerous outhouses – the need to go down the street to the home of the one relative who had a TV set - the criminal trials in which investigation, conviction, and execution, all took place within a matter of weeks - the general lack of people's connectedness. It all will probably make you glad to be living now, rather than back in what were, for many, those even meaner times.

Excellent true story about the strangling of thousands of people from air pollution and a serial killer in the 1940s and 1950s in the UK. Kate Winkler Dawson weaves these two stories that occurred at the same time together well. She humanizes the victims and pays extra attention to the details of their lives in a way that makes the reader/listener care about them. Graeme Malcom is a gem to listen to and having a Brit narrate a British story was an important choice. It was also interesting to see the parallels of the British government debating the cause of the London Smog and minimizing the effect of it for years with current government officials minimizing similar atrocities. The book is well worth a read or listen as you learn about John Reginald Christie and the Great London Smog. I have both the Kindle and Audible versions.

An account of two killers who struck London in December of 1952. One was front page news and readily discussed in Parliament. An unassuming man, John Reginald Christie, seemingly an invalid but who still managed to kill and dispose of several women over a period of years. The second wiped out thousands, but was largely ignored in Parliament except for by the dogged insistence of MP Norman Dodds. The weather plus the pollution of December 1952 turned the ordinary London fog into a mixture that killed many thousands. This is the story of how one made more news than the other, and how both impacted English laws. This was a fascinating read. It is a bit horrifying how the government turned a blind eye to how horrible coal was for the environment for so long because it wasn't convenient for their economic plans. Yikes! But there is ultimately hope in that people like Dodds can force the government to do what is right by refusing to give up championing a cause. This story is the start of the story of bettering the air quality of England. Change didn't happen quickly at all, but it eventually did start. I liked that the author chose to tell this story mostly through the stories of everyday people. She interviewed and tells about the smog from the viewpoint of a young teen, a cop on the streets, a doctor, and Norman Dodds. It does mean you have to keep track of more people as the book bounces between the smog and Christie's stories, but in the end it makes it more memorable for being told from the viewpoint of people who lived it. This book is also quite the commentary on how sensationalism is what makes news and how what makes news influences the government. The Christie case was most interesting in the way that it impacted the death sentence in England. Recommended to those interested in true crime, the way government policies are changed, and environmental history.Notes on content: Just a couple minor swears in quotations. Christie liked to kill his victims either during intercourse or violate them after he killed them. That is related matter of factly, like you'd read in a newspaper. The Christie killings are all strangulations, so not bloody but cold and brutal. Several agonizing deaths from the smog are related and deadly crashes because of the fog are also related.

I grew up in the west London suburbs in the 50's. This is a very accurate description of the awful yellow/green fogs we called pea soupers. I used to make pocket money guiding automobiles down the road with a torch (flashlight), the forward visibility was under 10 feet. I can't remember any government health warnings, but soon after we were prohibited from burning coal and could only burn coke. I remember the phrase "nutty slack" but all I remember is burning anthracite coal. The coal man delivered the coal in 112lb (hundredweight) sacks, we had a separate coal bunker outside the house and it was my chore to go fill the coal bucket in the evenings.I highly recommend this book as an example of working folks lives in the London winters. I also remember the news articles on Christie, but as a child I knew very few of the details.
