What a fantastic book on church history and denominations with wonderful vision for unity. I also appreciate his calling out of the church settling for 'invisible' unity where we are not in fellowship. It suffers for the chapter predicting what the future church could/should look like, and that would have been best left at the end as an addendum rather than disrupting the flow of information and commentary by putting it so close to the front - I almost set it down because it read so much like fantastical blue prints for Leithart's ideal church splicing; like an 'Esperanto' of liturgy. However, everything after that point redeems the book to the perspective that only God knows how to get us to the point of unity and what that will look like. I'm very glad I continued reading it.

This is a challenging and good presentation of an unpopular topic in Christian circles. I appreciate the perspective. The writer should be commended for courage as well as articulation. Leithart is willing to ask hard questions... however, are those who should be listening willing to even hear? I believe this is a topic needs to be more on the forefront of pastors and church leaders who communicate historical Christian faith as a means to live. If this becomes a more front and center dialogue, Christian faith would be a must. How does one present this topic to their leadership without being renounced, rejected and/ or ignored? This is the arena that needs time be explored to round out the viability of implementation.

Leithart dreams of unity in Christianity. He wants Protestants to pursue internal reforms that would bring churches more in line with Scripture and Christian tradition. He calls this new ecclesiology Reformational Catholicism.He has arranged his book in four parts. In the first section he lays out his vision. Next he looks at denominational Christianity in the U.S. and identifies the faults. Next he shows how God is remapping the global church. His final section includes guidelines to theologians, pastors, and lay Christians who want to work on this idea.Here is a little of what he says the future church will look like. “Everyone will accept the whole of the tradition, East and West and beyond, past and present, as a treasure entrusted by the Spirit to the church.” (443/4456) Creeds and catechisms of the Reformation and the Catholic church will be used but with the understanding that they may be distorted. “They will leave every creed and confession open to correction by the Word of God.” (460/4456) Mary will be honored and the saints will be celebrated. “Protestant churches will have to become more catholic, and Catholic and Orthodox churches will have to become more biblical.” (615/4456)Leithart writes that in disputed doctrinal areas, “Protestants should operate on one overriding principle: Scripture is the final source for and judge of theological controversy.” (2911/4456) Correctly framed, he says, that principle can be agreeable to Catholics. My question is who will determine what Scripture says? I think every denomination would say they now consider Scripture their final source. He also suggests a “renewed appreciation for pre-Reformation modes of reading and interpreting Scripture.” (2954/4456) He suggests reviving the medieval Quadriga method, something that led to wild speculations about the meaning of Bible passages.This dream and the means to arrive at it seems very unworkable to me. To accept all traditions fails to realize that some traditions might just be ungodly and non-Biblical. But then, who would make that evaluation? Leithart does say there would be controversies and struggles in the future.I found Leithart's writing style difficult to follow. I felt he was asking Protestants to give up much more than Catholics. I also felt that the importance of salvation by grace, through faith in Jesus Christ was somewhat ignored. Unity in Christianity is an admirable dream, but at what cost to those who need to know the truth of salvation?There is some good information toward the end of the book, helping pastors and lay people get a vision for unity in their own community. Rather than ironing out doctrinal differences, this unity is more on the level of working together in the community.I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Very good viewpoint

Excellent

Peter Leithart is, simultaneously, provocative and substantive. This may seem like an odd thing to say, but it is a rare quality for any theological writer to possess; he can both grab and hold the reader's attention through gifted prose, and present substantial theological arguments with relative ease. A good friend of mine one quipped, "Leithart is such a theological maverick". He's right, and this book is no different.For anyone familiar with Leithart's writings for a while, or a consistent reader of his blog over at First Things, this book will come as no surprise. The unity of the church catholic (universal) has been a passion/theme in Leithart's writing for some time. Indeed, this book has been brewing for some time now, and found its impetus, in a particularly thought-provoking post by the same title on First things in 2013. It started a small blog storm, and eventually led to a conference panel titled "The Future of Protestantism". Now, a few years later, Leithart has expounded upon that post, and many others, in book form. He has also answered many of his critics responses in the process.So, what is "The End of Protestantism" as Leithart sees it. It's important to note that this isn't just a doomsday tale - an easy shot across the bow at denominationalism - though, Leithart doesn't let denominationalism off of the hook. This is also not some utopian vision of what the church could look like - in fact, Leithart goes to great lengths to disspell this idea. Instead, this is a substantial proposal of what the church *should* look like -a clarion call for the "end" of Protestantism in two ways: the actually "end" finality of American (this is his focus) denominationalism as it has severed/divided Christ's Body (the church) into, literal, pieces; but, it's also a call for Protestantism to seek its "end" (telos/goal) which is the unity of the Body, that Christ prays for in John 17, in the "not yet" kingdom of God. He calls this proposal, "Reformational Catholicism".Leihart grounds his proposal in Christ's prayer in John 17:21, "that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me". This is both the jumping off point for the proposal and its substance - we have not taken Christ's prayer and call for the unity of the church seriously enough, and out American denominational spirit is a testament to this, "Denominationalism is not union. It is the institutionalization of division. Our friendliness is part of the problem. It enables us to be complacent about defining ourselves not by union with our brothers but by our divisions" (4). He pulls no punches when it comes to denominations, and rightfully so. He connects our denominationalism with our Americanism in the U.S. church suggesting it has hurt our prophetic witness, "It (American church) cannot overcome Babel because the denominational church is a Christianized Babel" (89). This is one of Leithart's strongest points, because he goes on to point out that not only is the American church divided along denominational lines, but, as a result, racial/ethnic lines - to its shame: over 90% of U.S. churches are racially homogenized (91).So, there are many problems with American Protestantism: denominational divisions, racial divisions, and not taking the call for unity of Christ's Body seriously. Is this merely Leithart brow beating the Protestant church? Is this merely a negative book that offers no hope? No. Leithart devotes just as much time/ink to hope for the future. Indeed, part of his argument is that we should be the future church in the present, or "Be *now* what you *will be*". We are called to practice this unity now. One of things I most appreciated is that Leithart devotes an entire chapter to some of the benefits American denominationalism has brought to the church, and even goes so far as to claim it is/was God's intent for a time (a great chapter of biblical theology and Leithartian typology is devoted to this). So, the news isn't all bad. One of my favorite proposals comes from, likely, the most "utopian" chapter in the book, and from a end note (Leithart has a whole book worth of end notes). He is making a strong case for Reformational Catholicism (chapter 3), and dreaming of what this church might/could look like, and then he dreams further in an endnote: "I can dream in more detail: Churches in the future will use bread, not specially prepare wafers, stressing the continuity between the church's feast and the meals of daily life. They will use wine, not grape juice, not only because Jesus drank wine but because wine symbolizes the maturation of the goods of the earth and because wine induces Sabbatical restfulness. Churches will stress the Supper is a meal by sitting to eat, as the crowds did in the Gospels" (Endnote #18 p.196-7). And this is a just a taste of of his vision for the future church.Finally, he ends the book with some more practical, daily examples of how pastors, and laymen can pursue this vision - bringing this grand vision back to earth. I thought these were extremely helpful. Indeed, I think this could make a great follow-up/companion reading to James Davison Hunter's "To Change the World" as Leithart expounds on some of Hunter's observations, all the while I believe, giving "feet" to part of Hunter's "faithful presence" proposal.However, while reading, I couldn't help but catch the vision, while still feeling that it was "far off" - that it was too "not yet" to be realized in any practical sense. And, that may still be my main grudge at the end of this: How then shall we live? The examples felt, maybe, a bit too limited in scope for such a grand proposal, and in that way, fell prey to the "utopian" critique. I'm still unclear how Leithart sees the "give and take" of denominations in regards to doctrine. He mentions that it will be painful, but isn't always clear what doctrine should remain settles, and what can be held loosely. In this way, it's hard for me to see this sort of ecumenism leaving the confines of local "pastor's groups" or "cross-denomination missions efforts". These are good things, but fall short of actually practicing church together. Though, I will always take a strong proposal for unity, no matter how "utopian," because we need to catch the vision as the Body.Additionally, a minor note of personal critique: I am ardent fan of footnotes, but I can't stand end notes. This is something I have wished for in other Leithart books as well (particularly Between Babel and Beast).[Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher as part of the Launch Team]

The reason for my rating is the material covers what was discussed in my classes. I like the way the manual has specific questions and gives an explanation as to why an answer was selected. It was easy to understand the questions as well as the answers. It helps to know "why" even if you know or don't understand the answer. Once an answer is explained it's much easier to retain the reasoning behind the question in my opinion. Understanding an answer is validation to the individual studying the material; although an individual does have the option of viewing answers after each practice test. I have several highlights of the test manual that were helpful. The user's guide to this course was organized; clarity of the questions was helpful, the outlined content of the manual was adequate and consistent, examples shown are useful and the content in the manual has made me feel more confident as I prepare for the NBCOT-COTA Exam.

I like the setting of the questions and how they give you explanation of the questions. I am not sure what to expect on the exam so far but I like how those questions are set up to make you think for yourself, and then at the end they explain why they chose that answer.

they are very helpful, explain and use simple vocabulary to understand.I understand much better the definition of each disorder, dysfunction, or illness and the book show me some strategies to apply in some scenarios.The test practice are helpful because when you have the wrong answer they explain the right one. Alan definitely has a lot of consulting experience. He comes off a bit brash and arrogant at times, but in a way that you'd like to be with 30+ years under your belt. For example, he describes subcontractors as "the delivery people...who are a dime a dozen" as if they are almost sub-human, even saying "don't let them read my book."The book has some great information, BUT, it is incredibly verbose. What Alan takes 10 pages to describe could easily be boiled down into 10 sentences or less. This book could easily be half its size. I find myself waiting for him to get to the point multiple times. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the information he is conveying, I just wish he could do it more succinctly and matter-of-factly.My other complaint is that there is a noticeable amount of content seemingly copied wholesale either from or into his other books. Sometimes it's a paragraph here and there, but occasionally it seems like an entire chapter is repurposed from another of his books word for word. He even uses the same euphemisms over and over in all of his books, sometime with only slightly different context.Other than that, however, there is good information here for anyone looking to get away from hourly billing and into a value-based system, so it has value in that regard.

I think the writer is full of sh... I think this book is based on Weiss sharing his accomplishments and bragging about them. Some of his ideas don't even make sense. I bought this book for a class and it was a pain to read. Many of my classmates shared the same sentiment as we had to review each chapter throughout the semester. I would say buy it only if its a requirement for a class. Don't buy it if you're trying to learn how to become a million dollar consultant. You won't​ get too much from this book. sorry.

This was a book I had to read for a class I'm taking. I was actually looking forward to reading this right up to the point where I actually started reading. Weiss comes across as awfully condescending towards any consultant who isn't running their consulting business the same way he does. He also contradicts himself throughout the book. In one chapter he talks about dropping the bottom 10% of your business and a few chapters later he talks about how you can mine your bottom business for more work. He also mentions that most new businesses fail (thanks for the tip) and then suggests that new businesses use a second mortgage for financing. Great tip. Most businesses fail so let's put our house on the line.The other big issue for me is that this book just seems so dated. I realize the first edition was in the early 90's but the last edition was in 2009. Not only has the technology moved past him (he was suggested technology that was dated even for 2009) but his whole approach seems to be stuck in that 70's and 80's mindset. What worked for him in the past won't work for him now. Worse, many of his suggestions will not serve new consultants well and, since that's kind of the point of this book, that's problematic.In the end, the best thing I can say about this book is that I got it used.

I have been in consulting for some 15 years and have learned hard lessons by trial and error. I wished I had found this book when I made my first attempt to consulting 15 years ago. The book is packed with the best advice to really build a million dollar practice. I have started already to cut fat, my two former partners are gone, do not need them to work, do not need to share my income with them, from now on if I need help it will be on a project basis. Though there are lots of advice and wisdom in this book. I found the chapter on Value Based fees to be the best part of the book. I had come to some practical methods of determinig my pricing, I have always used ROI to sell my projects, but I have not used the ROI to come up with a decent pricing, always have been able to give a 10-1 ratio from every dollar I have received or more, but now are staring to see the benefits of selling big tag projects to CEO's directly, without the need to put hourly-or -per diem fees.I recommend to all to read throughly the parts on answering objections. Those are great advice and will be very useful to change the minds of CEO's and avoid being down priced by the peanut counters that all finance dept. have.This book and a great book on negotiation from Herb Cohen - You can negotiate anything! will be a good match to get you moving specially if you are new in this business. Another and very important book for start ups is: The Four Steps to the epiphany by Steve Blank. I wished I had read it first before doing anything, basically what Blank tells you in the book is test your product/service idea first with real prospects in a real market. Find out if your product is really great and determine the minimum requirements to get to market successfully, do some iterations and test your business model and make sure there are customers ready to buy your product, and do your work before launch, this will help you avoid going to increase the stats of the failure start ups. This quote is great: most of start ups do not fail due to technology, they fail because lack of customers, I can tell you this is absolutely true. Forget the social networks, for consultants you need to meet real people and decision makers who have problems that you can solve, in the social networks what you will find is lots of people looking for free advice, consulting is not a charity. Unless you want to consult pro-bono for some real and good cause which is OK, but first make money..then else. Thanks

This is probably the worst text book I have ever read. This guy is 100% full of himself. I only purchased it because it was a requirement for my college capstone. I now wish I would have rented it. Since I can't re-sell it for more than .50 cents, I'll probably keep it in my hunting bag to use as an emergency toiletry product.

I recommend this for new and senior constants alike. Though somewhat dated, a new consultant will get fantastic foundational insights. For the more senior consultant, it's a great reminder of how to approach your business better, how to perfect your approach and apply your own learnings in new ways.

Some of these events are quite well known, like Waterloo, the Trojan Horse, and the Charge of the Light Brigade, while others are rather obscure, even for those fairly familiar with military history. In each case, he devotes some 20 or 30 pages describing the military actions leading up to the encounter and then the conduct of the battle itself, along with its aftermath. He also poses (but doesn’t answer) some provocative questions, asking how the battle might have turned out if one side or the other had done something different.Durschmied’s style and approach are somewhat of a mixed bag. Although he does his best to describe the tactics and troop movements in lay terms, this is still a book that will likely be better appreciated by military buffs. He names troops and weapons but doesn’t always describe them too well, so reading that two brigades were opposed by one division won’t mean that much for those who aren’t aware of the strengths of the units. And, since the battles he describes range from the Crusades to the First Gulf War, the weaponry and effective strategy involved change drastically.One of Durschmied’s strengths is his characterization of the various commanders involved. He isn’t shy about criticizing generals for being lazy, vain, overly timid, foolhardy, or downright stupid, and his descriptions of the battles generally back him up. The author does adopt one annoying convention of recreating supposed conversations in which the commanders discuss what they are going do. I appreciate his attempts to make the book more accessible to the general public, but obviously no one was recording what the Crusaders said before they went into battle. Simply stating facts (supported by contemporary accounts) or expressing his opinions of what might have been discussed would, in my view, have made for a better book.When it comes to Durschmeid’s main thesis, that much of human history turns on a more or less chance event, the author is less successful in proving his point. In some cases, such as one battle which was actually a friendly fire incident in which various units of the same army started shooting at each other over possession of a barrel of schnapps, it’s pretty clear that the “hinge” led to the eventual result. In others, such as the first Gulf War, the best hinge he can come up with was Saddam Hussein’s miscalculation in invading Kuwait in the first place. He also is on shakier ground in ascribing long term consequences to some of these events. Yes, Napoleon could easily have won at Waterloo and changed European history significantly, but in some cases, the side that wins the battle gains little. The mistakes that cost the members of the Light Brigade their lives, even if avoided, wouldn’t have affected the Crimean War very much at all.I should point out that this is the second edition of Durschmied’s book, written in 2015, following an earlier edition from 2000. I don’t know exactly what changes were made, but the author did add a second prologue briefly discussing 9/11 and the Second Gulf War and its aftermath. Ironically, that material better illustrates his point (a handful of men armed with box cutters changed the entire face of the Middle East) than some of his original chapters do.“The Hinge Factor” is a difficult book to rate, because its appeal will probably vary depending on the audience. Military buffs will probably enjoy it a great deal, while more general audiences may get confused by some of the details (more maps would definitely have helped). Even those who enjoy Durschmeid’s description of battles, generals, and tactics will probably find that he loses focus on his main theme at times in his zest for getting into the heat of battle. But he brings up many fascinating bits of trivia many people will enjoy (the Trojan Horse was successful, not because of the handful of Greeks inside, but because the Horse was so big the Trojans had to take apart the gates of the city to get it inside, thus leaving themselves wide open for a sneak attack). Since “The Hinge Factor” bills itself as more of a general interest book and isn’t that strong in demonstrating its main premise in several chapters, I am giving it a marginal three-star recommendation for general audiences, with the caveat that military history fans will get more out of it.

Fairly easy read based on the premise of “what if” a particularly bad military decision or inaction hadn’t occurred. All good stuff, none controversial, more re-affirming what others have identified as historically altering moments.What is annoying is the inconsistency of quoting foreigners speaking their native tongue. Some Europeans are quoted as such with an accompanying English translation, some are not- even when the quote is at some length, leaving those of us trying to master just one tongue unnecessarily in the dark. It is not that deep a subject. Russians, Arabs and those from the Far East are deemed honorary English and are quoted as such.A small point, but as the book ably points out, sometimes it is the smaller choices that have the largest impact.

Mr. Durschmied's brilliant encapsulation of the relevant facts that underscore his conclusions about each historic military outcome has stood the test of time. This was my second reading of this work. In the interim I read several books about the events he summarizes. Some of the other books left out several key details mentioned by Durschmied. If you are a fan of Victor Hugo's "The Battle of Waterloo", this is a spoiler alert.This book may pique your interest in reading more about some of these events. I will be reading Erik's other books which I am sure will not disappoint.

Stopped reading less than halfway through. The author's choices as to what constituted chance and stupidity lost me at the battle of Antietam. Much more enjoyed Victor Davis Hansen's "Savior Generals" which chronicled how having the right man in the right place at the right time saved the day.

Interesting account of how major world events changed ("hinged") around a single or short series of mistakes/luck. The author seemed well informed on the historical events in the book and able to define the change of fortune that turned a current event into history. He does include a very short "what if" speculation on alternative outcomes but refreshingly not overdone in that respect.

A great book showing how chance and stupidity impact specific events throughout history, and how they impact the larger course of history. Examples include the Charge of the Light Brigade, finding plans in a cigar case at Antietam, and miscommunication at Waterloo. Enlightening to the casual history student, or someone teaching history to middle or high school.Minus 1 star because this should be a much more encompassing book; way too short!

EXCELLENT!!! the chapter on "Joseph II, by the grace of God Emperor of Austria," ("with great apprehension") was hilarious puts me in mind of Thomas B. Costain's Plantagenets "with great unwisdom." Loved the book. great introduction to reading military books.

I have always been amazed how being in the right place and time could affect your life for better or worse. One or two seconds difference could save your life. On a grand scale, throughout history, proper timing and positioning could have saved millions of lives or changed our historical path completely as you so aptly pointed out in this book. Well written examples of what happened but could have had such a profoundly different outcome if decisions by those in authority had been timed and coordinated oh so slightly differently. What if?????
