#684,386 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Given the title of the book, you would think it would introduce and teach you SAS code programming. But, it really does not. It teaches you how to use SAS Enterprise Guide and SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office Suite. I can see why many readers would get rather upset at this inaccurate disclosure as conveyed by the title of the book. I think the book should have had a more accurate title or maybe including a subtitle. If you read the back cover of the book, this issue is partly sorted out; But, only partly. There is another issue with this book. And, in my mind it is more important than the mistitling of the book. The visuals are terrible. Many times they were unclear, fuzzy, gray-on-gray, and downright unviewable. The book illustrated some Box plots where you litterally could not see the Box plots at all. Many other graphs were hardly better. Given that SAS Entreprise Guide (SEG) is a beautiful visual interface. That is what makes it user friendly. It is kind of challenging to learn it from a book that does not impart the visual interface well. The book is not all bad. The two authors are well qualified to teach you about SEG. One of the authors contributed to the initial development of SEG. And, the other managed the SEG development team for a long time. Given that, they both know what they are talking about. In a classic for Dummies style, this book is easily accessible with a lot of examples.SEG and the related SAS Add-In for Excel are remarkably powerful and user friendly tool. This renders SAS, a very powerful quantitative program, very accessible to non-coders or non-programmers. SEG really serves two purposes. First, it is a great tool for non-programmers who have no intention to ever use a SAS code, or at least keep this coding to a bare minimum. Second, it is also a great tool as a training wheel for aspiring SAS coders. The latter may have acquired good coding aptitude using other programs such as R, Matlab, and Python. And, they would look to get up the speed quickly to be productive in no time using SEG while learning in a more deliberate way SAS codes. As you can tell, I am a lot more jazzed about the potential of SEG than the overall teaching quality of this book. I later went through the SEG tutorial that, contrary to this book, has excellent visuals. And, I finally could "see" what the authors were really talking about. The book I got, with its poor graphic quality, should not have been released. As is, I am not sure it was the best use of my time to learn SEG with this book.I view it as a missed opportunity. Given the outstanding background of the authors, and a pretty genuine effort from themselves, with descent visuals this book learning impact on the reader could have been a multiple better than it is. If you are going to write a book teaching about a visual interface you better have good visuals. Otherwise, the readers will have very little to work with and won't learn a thing.

Not worth it if you are working with the latest version of SAS. A new edition of this book is required.

The 2nd edition of this book has the same terrible title as the first. It should have been called SAS Enterprise Guide for Dummies because it has little information on coding in SAS and a lot on the Enterprise Guide (EG) 4.2 graphical user interface. The book walks you through the range of basic tasks to be done prior to data analysis using EG. Topics from importing, to subsetting/combining data sets, to producing web pages with summary statistics and graphics are covered in an easy to read format. The second edition does not add a lot of new material (one stand out thing is an example on using new SAS graphics code). So don't bother picking this up if you have the first edition. While I like this book, there are a couple weaknesses. There is not enough information on how to check the quality of your data. While the author explains how to make basic subsets of data, there is not enough guidance on how to do more complicated subsetting. For example, taking a subset of records/subjects from a data file using an average is doable using the graphical user interface in EG but the book only mentions it in the context of writing code. Another problem is in the lack of information on doing statistics. If you need a book on analysis this is not a particularly good choice because the discussion is limited to very basic correlation, regression and ANOVA. On the other hand, the author focuses in on basic data validation and the tools needed to check statistical assumptions. So, this combined with a "real" statistics book is an excellent combination. There are a couple of sections that I have not seen written up in any other SAS book including working with OLAP and integration with MS Office as well as a brief introduction to SAS Enterprise Miner. So, overall this is a good introductory book for the money.

I was going to be testing the SAS Enterprise Guide 5.1 for our company and had no prior experience with SAS apps. I was told to get another book ("The Little Blue SAS Book"), which should help me work with the app. It was ok but did not explain many things very well for a newby" using SAS.I looked into the "Sas for Dummies" book and it plugged the gaps very well!I highly, very highly recommend this book if you are thinking about using SAS Enterprise Guide, you won't regret it!

The title is miss leading. It is not base SAS that is the focus of the book, but SAS Enterprise Guide. Therefore, This is not a good book if you want to learn the nuts and bolts of SAS. Because the bulk of the book focuses on the use of the enterprise guide , there are no demonstrations of syntax until they begin to talk about using SQL. Just not a good book.

The book is missing pages 97-120.... I didn't not get the full content with my purchase

Sometimes hard to follow, but good supplemental reading.

Sas for dummies delivers what it says, a general brush on the characteristics of SAS. Depending on the capabilities and by-products installed could be of more help; in my case, the OLAP interface and the office plugging is lacking, making half the book not really helpful. Personally I would recommend the little SAS Book for enterprise.

Wow! After reading and scores of reviews here at Amazon and elsewhere, I feel more inclined to review the reviews than I do the book. However I will start with the book but won't spend a great deal of time on it.I take it that Nicholas Wade is attempting to make the case (1), that there are distinguishable races, and nations wherein some individual races predominate; (2), that it is plain that some nations have become more 'successful' than others; (3), that though genetic makeup in all is fairly straightforward in content, the presence or positioning of variant forms of those genes (alleles) cause differences in how they perform in the humans they occupy; (4), that said alleles are passed along hereditarily within races and nations, and possibly have the capacity to thrust those races evolutionally and advantageously forward in the human contest to achieve success; (5), that this process can be described as 'higher' societal cultures alongside higher IQs sending certain nations or societies into the forefront of international performance.Because the above smacks of racism, politically-correct-oriented academics must oppose Prof. Wade's hypothesis. But Prof. Wade argues that academia should set such fears aside in the interest of the furtherance of science's progress towards truth. My reviewing of the negative reviews of tells to me that Prof. Wade's views as publicized in his book, will continue to face strong opposition from the PC academia currently ensconced in U.S. institutions of higher learning; this, though Wade's line of reasoning is just as sound if not more so, than those of the 1960s-affected academics. All of this can be described as a continuing standoff between PC and certain opposing ideas that transcend PC.

The negative reviews of this book actually encouraged me to buy and to read through it. Afterwards I perused the reviews here on Amazon, and my conclusion is that the controversy regarding this book is another episode in the ongoing reaction to new insights developed from recent advances in genetics, from supporters of established social science, linguistic, and historical paradigms. For example, I recall viewing on YouTube last year a presentation called "The Assault on Historical Linguistics" that criticized competing paradigms generated by discoveries in genetics and by the resulting haplogroup mapping of human expansion across the world. I have seen other examples of defensive reactions by proponents of paradigms social science and historical paradigms that were established with the evidence available by the 1970s, this had led to strong attacks trying to discredit new conceptual frameworks driven by new discoveries in genetics.Nicholas Wade in his book states that racism must be opposed on principle, and that politics should not drive science. Perhaps the members of the current academic establishment need to retire so that a newer generation can look a new evidence with new and less prejudiced eyes.

Nicely researched, and eloquently presented. Anyone interested in the science of race will find a very fair breakdown of the issue in history, science and social application. If you are looking for justification for a racial superiority of any kind, this is not the book. In fact, the less racist you think you are, the more I would recommend this book, as a gateway to expanding your own horizons on the actual background of the subjects.I read this book in parallel with Steven A. LeBlanc's book Constant Battles: Why We Fight/The Myth of the Noble Savage and a Peaceful Past, and found them very mutually complementary.

5 stars for Nicholas Wade taking on a too-often politicized topic and presenting the science with unemotional seriousness. Many topics he covers may be new to readers, and disturbing, such as research done on racial variation in the MAO-A ("violence" or "warrior") gene and its association with psychopathic personality traits; world-wide variations in IQ and links to economic disparities and crime. All very interesting, none of which I'll detail here for fear of down-voting and inciting a comment war. The chapter "Jewish Adaptations" was eye opening, as well.Copious Notes helped me understand the depth of Wade's research into the important topic. A plus was that I found some new books to read, too.In Wade's hands, history and science are made plain, and you can't ask for much more. A studious reader will take much away from this book.I loved it/It was amazing5/5 Goodreads5/5 Amazon

Genetics, the study of heredity, once consisted of nothing but competing politically motivated opinions especially on issues of race, institutions, culture, and society. And it has been perverted by politicians, e.g., Stalin'/Lysenko's wacky genetics, Nazi's eugenics, and just as climate science now is being perverted by politicians for more power and control over people.. But since the discovery of the DNA helix in the 1950s, the automation of sequencing in the 1980s, and the reading of the entire human genome in 2003, the study of genetics has matured to a real science based upon molecular biology and the rigorous testing and verification or refutation of hypotheses. It promises to benefit all of mankind in many ways including improved medical treatment. And it also is revealing new insights into variations among different races. But American academia today is so intellectually corrupt that genetics researchers avoid the biology of race in favor of the politically accepted ideology of race for fear of being labeled racist and having their careers destroyed. But truth can't be suppressed everywhere not even by these neo Nazis.

Review

“In this pioneering book, Dan Goleman and his collaborators demonstrate—in vivid and compelling fashion—how education can be transformed through a synthesis of these intelligences.”—Howard Gardner, Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education, Harvard Graduate School of Education  "In the 21st century, we need a new relationship with nature, a redefinition of both environmentalism and ecoliteracy. Ecoliterate offers a roadmap for educators—and the rest of us—to that future, one based on empathy, kinship, natural intelligence, and hope. We're in their debt for showing the way."— Richard Louv, author of The Nature Principle and Last Child in the Woods  “Gutsy, eloquent, moving, Ecoliterate is a masterpiece of motivation and practical guidance. Yes, it is perfect for educators, but it is also perfect for students, parents, grandparents, and all of us yearning to contribute to life on our planet. Ecoliterate will help young people discover their own power—and that genie is impossible to get back in the bottle! I love this book.”—Frances Moore Lappé, author of EcoMind: Changing the Way We Think, to Create the World We Want  “Beautifully written, accessible, and urgently important, Ecoliterate introduces us to individuals and communities around the country who in very real, practical ways are demonstrating that a new world is possible. No harangue here; this is about hope, embodied in educating our children—head, heart, and hands—to deeply understand how to take care of themselves, their neighbors, and the natural world on which we all depend.”—Michael Ableman, farmer and author of From the Good Earth, On Good Land, and Fields of Plenty  “To be Ecoliterate is to be equipped to be Earth Citizens, to reach our full potential as human beings. This important book shows us how."—Vandana Shiva, Founder, Navdanya International and author of Soil Not Oil  “Timely, important, healing, and hopeful—Ecoliterate is a ‘must read, must implement’ guide to a healthy and sustainable present and future.”—Cheryl Charles, President and CEO, Children & Nature Network  “The Center for Ecoliteracy has for years been a preeminent thought leader for how we can educate our children in a way that creates generations of earth-stewards. Ecoliterate is a much-needed guide for exactly how to accomplish this goal and includes great examples that demonstrate the success of their approach.”—Oran B. Through stories ranging from the Arctic to Appalachia and New Mexico to New Orleans, the authors reveal how education that engages in some of the most pressing ecological issues of the day advances academic achievement, fosters resilience, and helps school communities play a vital role in protecting the natural world. The book also includes a professional development guide and exploration of five practices of engaged ecoliteracy: developing empathy for all forms of life, embracing sustainability as a community practice, making the invisible visible, anticipating unintended consequences, and understanding how nature sustains life. Praise for Ecoliterate "One of the most urgent issues facing humanity is fixing our broken relationship with the earth, on which all life depends. To do that, we have to think, feel, and act differently. With vivid examples and lucid analysis, this powerful and persuasive book shows just how much inspired educators and students can achieve together. It should enlighten and invigorate schools and communities everywhere." —Sir Ken Robinson, creativity expert and author of The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything "Ecoliterate provides a veritable how-to guide for educators to creatively engage young people in the most important ecological issues of the day, helping them gain knowledge of and empathy for all living systems, which is bound to enrich their lives and protect the future of our planet." —Gail Connelly, executive director, National Association of Elementary School Principals

This would be an excellent book for everyone to read, not just educators. I've read Daniel Goleman's Social Intelligence and Ecological Intelligence and love how he (and co-authors) have tied these great works together with Emotional Intelligence into a practical "guidebook." I love how they handle so many tough/unpleasant topics in a positive way, giving examples to all of us on how to approach difficult discussions and take action in positive, extremely effective ways. I'm looking forward to reading it again and sending gift copies to several people I know who would have great appreciation for the wisdom within.

I value the writing technique of telling the story from a singular individual, rather than simply stating statistics and facts. You are more able to relate to the person and have insights as to how you too could make a difference. As an educator, I appreciate how we can rethink strategies and lesson plans to better enable our own students to experience environmental issues and how they impact each of us and our earth.

This provides the reader with a a variety of case studies that have effectively applied the Eco Literacy principles to affect positive change in their communities.

Agaian good interdisciplinary approach

An excellent combinaton of theory and practice. Daniel Goleman uses exemplars from real life to help educators guide the next generation to use various intelligences to protect, support and provide for our Earth in sustainable ways.

fresh and compelling. My university environmental educations students really enjoy this book. They are finding it helpful and fulfilling!

Love it!

I especially liked the narratives of teachers providing opportunities for their students to learn first hand and then act and make a difference based on their learning.

Want to know why you are unhappy at work. OBTW this is Richard writing this...I am a Family Physician and I understand family systems. The foundation of the work compares organizational dysfunction to family dysfunction. It is a rational and easy to read book. It helped me understand the dynamics of my workplace and realize I needed to leave my job! Don't get me wrong....this is not the advise of the author. Once understanding the workplace is covered there are survival tips. For me I came to the conclusion there is little chance of recovery for the organization I worked with. A must read book for managers, owners and employees who want to grow and become healthier.

More than half of this book is dedicated to describing research that shows that males are more confident than females. After reading one example after another, I was left feeling that there was not much hope for females when it came to learning confidence. Only chapters 6-8 cover how females can raise their confidence level (or, in the case of chapter 7, how you can raise a confident daughter), and even then the advice is basically limited to "Be willing to fail. Take action. Feel the fear and do it anyway." If you really want to know how to raise your confidence level and get along in society, reading "The Charisma Myth" might be time better spent.

I bought this book awhile ago, before I retired, because I was in an ill-fitting job, a quiet introvert among a group of extremely confident extroverts, and I was desperate for help. I didn't read it at that time. I wish I had. I have never been good at self-promotion, but in a workplace full of those who are, it's necessary. And this book shows how reasonable and honest self-promotion is a good thing and not a display of arrogance. We think nothing of men pushing themselves forward and touting their accomplishments, but in women it's considered tacky. This book points out how men learn, from childhood on, how to be confident, how to fail without feeling like a failure, while women tend to back away from that. Perhaps it is changing now, but that is definitely how it was when I was growing up. And worse, it was such a part of the social fabric that I never even thought twice about it. Women who talked themselves up were haughty. Humility was more attractive for women. But this left us vulnerable in the workplace, relegated to the back as men naturally push forward, and that is what the boss sees, leaving women's contributions unnoticed or under-noticed. I experienced this myself as, uncomfortable speaking up, I would hear others say what I was silently thinking and they got credit while I appeared mute and empty of ideas. Very foolish on my part. This book helps explain a lot of the thinking behind these types of actions and shows ways to change.Truly, I thought this would be just another flavor of the day business book but I was pleasantly surprised. It is primarily aimed at the work world but contains information useful at any point in life. I'm glad I finally read it.

Best book I've read in decades; excellent research and science plus authors own experiences woven in. Couldn't put it down!

I would like to see everyone who teaches even one girl, young woman, adult female, etc. read this book. We need, desperately, to change the way women think of themselves. It took nearly 80 years for me to gain the self-confidence that my brothers seem to have inherited along with other genes. We must do better. There is a great deal of evidence to support my contention that our mental capacity is as good as or greater than our male counterparts. Let's do whatever is necessary to keep our females acting this truth. This book is a great beginning! Jo Seier-Doofe

This books is a bit fluffy but an absolute must-read for any lady out there. Why do women not negotiate as well as men? Why are (some) women not taken as seriously as men in the workplace? This book mentioned so many things that I used to do myself and I could see how i'm stacking the deck against myself without even knowing it. I read it before a salary negotiation and as a result, I upped my initial asking number (and they gave it to me!). It's a thin book so you'll finish it in an afternoon or two. Also half of it is fluffy and skim-able. Again, if you're a lady, it's an absolute MUST read.

I really enjoyed reading this book - it was like a summary of the many instances of my own crises of confidence through my life, and provided much food for thought. I had forgotten (at nearly 68 years of age) that I used to be so unsure of myself - and yet all the examples they cited of women whom they'd interviewed all sounded horrifyingly familiar. I think those of us who are older, who have stuck it out in our careers, have gradually learned that we must keep taking action, stop over-thinking, and accept being less than perfect, but, it was lovely to see the way they charted those conclusions all laid out so clearly.I am recommending the book to many of my younger women friends and clients. I am also discussing it with the men in my life too - because the men have no idea how deeply pervasive the feelings of inadequacy can be in their very capable and clearly intelligent women.

This book has a lot of interesting science but besides that I found it hard to stay focused when reading it. I basically forced myself to finish it because I hate starting books and not finishing them. I do think that other people may enjoy this book more though considering I tend to enjoy thrillers and self help books the most. I thought this book would be like a self help book but it wasn't quite to my taste.

I have read a lot of female empowerment books and what I loved about this one was how they roped genetics as part of the confidence issue. I thought it was really interesting to see how our DNA influences us-- but also to know that we can surpass our genetic makeup and pave our own path with confidence.

***some vague spoilers****2.5 STARSWhen I was a teenager, I would have lopped up FIVE FEET APART written by Rachel Lippincott from a screenplay of a movie of the same name premiering March 2019. I loved stories about sick and dying people, no matter how sappy or unrealistic.FIVE FEET APART adds a new twist on sick-lit by adding the very real scenario that two cystic fibrosis patients cannot be within six feet of each other, for risk of life threatening cross-contamination.As as adult, having survived cancer (so far) and being more cynical, I still enjoy sick-lit IF done well including:1. Respect for the illness-realistic portrayal of the illness and side effects (no miracle cures, no using the illness conveniently and forgetting about it when it’s inconvenient to the plot)2. Respect for real sufferers of the illness-characters are more than their illnesses even if the illness occupies a large part of their lives3. Realistic treatments and prognoses4. Realistic medical procedures (I’m okay with fictionalized treatments/meds as long as they have a basis in reality).Although predictable, FIVE FEET APART did all four relatively well, from my perspective of not having the illness. Sufferers may feel differently. Since the screenplay preceded the novel, character development outside CF was lacking. Lippincott gave each character a trait or two and ran with it: Stella organized rule-follower, Poe gay POC, Will artistic rebel. To be fair, CF can be a lifeconsuming illness.FIVE FEET APART, at times felt like tropeapalooza.Instalove: checkPivotal Argument: checkObligatory Death: checkMartyrdom: checkTo be fair, kids dealing with life threatening illnesses live with different timetables than those who don’t. Instalove on a hospital ward between two almost adults dealing with the same illness is more forgivable than in other settings, however the story spans over only a few weeks which feels more like instalove on steroids.I’d be most interested in how teenage CF sufferers felt about the book. They’re main characters in so few books, writers owe them a lot of realism and excellent storytelling. FIVE FEET APART is one of those books I’d have loved as a teen, then reread in my twenties and wondered why I ever liked it.

A novel about teenagers with Cystic Fibrosis? When I was a teenager in the fifties, there was Ellen, a girl in my school who had “something wrong with her lungs”. I remember her coughing, sometimes breathing noisily and sitting on the bench when the rest of us had PE. I remember the adults whispering “So sad” and “She’ll die young”. We stayed away. Maybe death was infectious. Ellen died soon after I graduated. That’s when I found out that it was cystic fibrosis that killed her.Now 60 years later I read about Stella, Will and Poe, normal teenagers, except there is nothing normal about their lives. They are in a hospital struggling to stay alive. The center of the novel is a love story. Stella and Will fall in love for the first time in their lives and grapple with the fact that it can be fatally dangerous to touch each other. But it’s also a story about friendship and it’s these friendships that are deeply moving: the friendship between Stella and Poe, who have spent months and months of their lives in adjoining hospital rooms, between Stella and her friends Mya and Camilla, who come to plan for their senior trip, which Stella won’t be able to attend, between Will and his friends Jason and Hope, who get an hour of private time in Will’s hospital room, and finally between Poe and his friend and lover Michael, who Poe pushes away because he doesn’t want him to get hurt. These friendships are special because they have nothing to do with pitying a person with a fatal disease. They are friends because they are important to each other. I love the kids and their story and I hope that there never will be another Ellen, who is an outsider because people are afraid that she’ll die on them.

I have a child with CF, and I bought this book because of all the hype that I was hearing regarding it. Yes there are some things they stretch regarding CF but I believe it just highlights and raises awareness for this horrible disease that we so need. Worth the read, and my 17 yr old son with CF enjoyed it also. (My son is waiting for a double lung and possibly heart transplant, this is a very scary time in his life, this book helped him feel not so alone, CFers can not “hang out” with each other so it makes for a very lonely disease)

2.5 stars.I sort of flew through this book. I had high expectations going in from the cover alone. With that being said, I did enjoy some parts. Stella was a sort of neat freak, controlling in a good way, character that meant well. Will was your cliche, I don’t care, rebel but he had his reasons behind it.I didn’t like the writing style of this book. I felt like some phrases and idioms were used over and over, possibly for emphasis but I found it annoying. Especially with it being 3 authors behind the book, I definitely expected better. The story itself fell a bit short for me toward the end. I won’t give spoilers but in certain situations, there wasn’t enough detail given. Fingers crossed the movie is better.
