About the Author

Grace Jacob served the Lord (with her husband and two sons) in Hong Kong and Mainland China from 1986-2015, where she was passionate about sharing the gospel in a way that respected the beliefs of her friends. By God’s grace she led many atheists, Buddhists, idol-worshippers, and an animist to the Lord. She speaks the heart languages of her Chinese friends—Cantonese and Mandarin. Grace loves telling a good story, whether around a BBQ with friends, or while speaking on evangelism in front of audiences around the nation. She holds a Bachelor of Biology, and she also holds a Master of Divinity from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Grace has been published in Decision magazine. Dragon Ride shattered all my pre-conceived ideas of life in China. Far from easy and progressive, it is hard, frightening and, for an American missionary, lonely. After one particularly grim ordeal, the author became aware that this was her initiation into being accepted as Chinese, where one “always faced a brick wall, and was never given a solution for making life work”. A sense of humor was helpful, if not required. Food was unusual (stir-fried silkworms anyone?)This is an amazing book. A 21st century missionary is making missions real for today. Read it aloud with your family – from your mid-elementary aged children to the oldest senior in your home, everyone will be drawn into the struggles, intrigue and suspense written here. You will share in the fears, disappointments, rejection and humiliation of Chinese Christians who are arrested and often jailed for their faith. Ministry was slow, cautious; demons were real; threats were daily; prayer was imperative.The author’s own background as an atheist, and her own search for truth, became a starting point for conversations with university students during those years in China and Hong Kong. Grace Jacob doesn’t pretend to know all the answers. She shared her doubts, imperfections, anger, questions, and the heartache of having to leave China for the safety of her family, and the safety of the Chinese believers. In all the years spent living there, this truth stood out: God was faithful. He could be trusted. He always answered prayer.

I got this book figuring it would be an adventure story of how discreet missionaries are doing God's work in China. However, once I got into it a few sections, I realized it was that and more. The book's insights are proving immediately applicable to my life, with valuable ideas about living and sharing faith in any diverse culture, including here in the US where I live.It was fascinating to read her ways of sharing the Good News with secular atheists, Buddhists, Muslims and others, by learning "to think like they think in order to make the gospel appealing." As Grace wrote: "I couldn’t start from my way of thinking and expect them to make the transition—almost definitely they wouldn’t. I had to make the switch and think like they did."The book is filled with engaging personal testimony, accounts of God's miraculous works, and lessons learned in many different ministry settings. Grace writes in a sincere, naturally interesting way that drew me into the book and kept me eager to read what would come next. I particularly appreciated the splendid imagery, to let me visualize the country & people.I thought the author's use of her 48 vignettes was masterful. If ever I were to take on writing to share some of my own life stories & lessons-learned with my kids & grandkids, this is the way I'd try to do it!Oh yes: you'll have to read the book to learn why "Lazy waitresses are ideal for secret Christian training. Dragon Ride is an excellent contribution to the understanding of contemporary Chinese culture and politics, as well as a segment of Evangelical Christianity in the USA. They have learned to speak fluently two largely different Chinese dialects, and have engaged the diverse peoples in Hong Kong, in large urban mainland Chinese centers and in the relative rural Chinese backwaters, including people from some non-Han minority groups. They have grown to love and appreciate the various peoples and their cultures and to develop ways of communication which are respectful of those peoples’ sensitivities. The author comes across as an intense, sincere, energetic, devout, and refreshingly transparent Christian woman. The book’s episodes highlight her attempts, successful and unsuccessful, to evangelize her non-Christian Chinese acquaintances, consistent with Jesus Christ's Great Commission found in the Bible in Matthew 28:18-20. The direct writing style is clearly the voice of the author. The book is easy to read and is conveniently divided into relatively short episodic chapters. It heavily uses the jargon of evangelical protestant Christians and therefore it will be quite familiar and comfortable to them. It may be misunderstood and even be off-putting to those not from those communities. Nevertheless this book will be of value to both Christians and non-Christians. Christians will find the stories inspirational and encouraging. To Christians and non-Christians alike it will provide valuable insights into modern Chinese culture, which has immense worldwide importance. At this time of national polarization and misunderstanding, for non-Christians or casual Christians it will give insights into some of the values and mindsets of a large number of their neighbors and fellow citizens, and this perhaps may be useful for personal bridge building.

As a 50 year old woman who is a little overweight (but on a diet) I was hesitant to read this book. I am SO glad I did!While it is a little odd reading a story with English references (I STILL have no idea how many "pounds" are in a "stone") this is the most humorous and yet insightful weight loss story I have ever read.There is a smattering of foul language, and a couple of the stories border on the risque, so it's not for the prudish, but this is definitely a must read for anyone who has battled with their weight. It's actually a good story for even those who have never had a weight problem as it gives you a humorous yet touching insight into someone who is overweight and shows the heart behind the body.I had several literal laugh-out-loud moments in this story, a couple of "oh, ick" spots and one "I've done that!"This is just a really cute, heartwarming, funny story. 5 stars.

I really enjoyed this book. I'd call it a satire on weight loss gimmicks and reality shows. Greg and Zoe are a great couple and are hilarious in their efforts to lose weight and journal their progress. Yes it is unbelievable, over the top, and silly at times but the laugh out loud moments come often. Think about when your funny friend tells you a story of something absurd that happens at the supermarket. They'll embellish at the right parts and make something humorous into something hilarious. That's the way this book is written. A series of stories that are over-exaggerated for fun. The characters are likable and real and if you have battled with your weight and fitness and have the ability to laugh at yourself and at others laughing at themselves you may enjoy it. Not for the feint of heart though. Quite a bit of foul language, sex talk, and political incorrectness.

What a great discovery Nick Spalding is! Spurred on by a friend to read this ode to healthy eating (after all the witty and cheeky observations are digested) I found his characters well developed and highly relatable to anyone who has struggled with weight or self esteem issues, which is pretty much everyone on the planet (well, those who are truthful anyway). The ending was perfect. Leaving the core of the story to be savored long after the last page has been read....now I have to run back to the Kindle store and buy up all of Mr. Spaldings other books. Thanks UK, for giving us another brilliant author to enjoy!

I bought this book for my daughter, but decided to read it first. I haven't read a Nick Spalding novel in quite some time, and was not disappointed with 'Fat Chance'. The tale is downright hilarious as both Zoe and Greg relate their individual narratives on how they went about losing weight for a chance to win 50k quid in a radio station promotion. Yes, it is irreverent and deflates the weight loss industry's many and varied useless products and diets. Definitely worth reading. The book helped me get over jet lag after a 32 hour flight back to the Antipodes.

I loved this book. It was well written from both the husband and the wife's point of views. It was motivational and it had a light heartedness about it without losing the seriousness of the issue of obesity. It pointed out how quietly and quickly this can happen if we don't pay attention and the way people react to it including the feeling of the people it has happened to. I would highly recommend this book. Fat Chance

Nick Spalding is hilarious, but this book took on a level of poignancy that his other writings haven't. These characters were just as relatable as Laura and Jamie Newman, but their situation takes them to self-reflections and truisms the Newmans didn't encounter. While the plot is basically a British couple's journey through "The Biggest Loser", regardless of the specific Biggest Loser scenarios being essentially re-enacted, the novel won't allow your attention to stray. My favorite quote, I can't post here because it is FAR from PC, but the one that is getting posted on my classroom wall is: "It's the small victories that count the most. They tend to add up to the big ones if you give them half a chance."

This was a really enjoyable book, I laughed out loud numerous times and loved the two main characters. You got the point of the struggle and embarrassment that the initially overweight couple was going through, and it was told in such a relatable, funny way, it made for a great read. Unfortunately the last quarter of the book gets a little preachy about the 'secret' to weight loss and exercise. This is a no brainer, and it was much more entertaining to get the same point across in the manner that the first three quarters of the book was written. It does come around to a better conclusion. So I was disappointed, but overall would still recommend the book.

I have gotten to enjoy the Nick Salding diary approach to writing. Giving both views of a weight loss contest, with the experiences, highs and lows, and the exultation when you realize you have been successful ... i have been there and it is very well described here. Spalding is not heminway or one of the classic authors, but I have enjoyed the English view of such universal experiences. Just picked up two more Spalding novels on my Kindle, like a bit of quite pleasant palate cleanser between more weighty reading courses.

It was funny but moreso at the beginning because after s while it became somewhat tiresome. It was like listening to a stand up comic going on and on.Also, the author did not do a great job differentiating between the male and female main characters; you could tell that it was the same (author's) voice. All in all it was o.k. light reading with no real character development. I am not sure if I would read this author again.

My 6 year old reads this religiously. Even though the book is a higher reading level he would normally read, he applies himself to try and has actually greatly improved his reading skills while learning almost everything there is to know about minecraft! Great book!

There is so much good stuff in this book. My 9 year old daughter loves it and is planning on building her underwater house and other cool ideas in this book. She had checked out the original version at the library and this one is definitely worth the investment.

This text is available from the US Government Printing Office for less money and with an expanded appendix. Both texts are deficient in their presentation of "Aid and Attendance" benefits which are better covered on line. Definitive guidance and counsel should be sought from your local Veterans Services Commission office. I was disappointed with this purchase. I would not purchase this text again, but I would think about the purchase of the GPO text for a secondary (but suspect) reference. I would not recommend this book to a friend, instead I would direct them to a Google inquiry for "Aid and Attendance" at va.gov followed by a trip to their local Veterans Services Commission office.
