About the Author
Todd Hido (born in Kent, Ohio, 1968) is a San Francisco Bay Area-based artist. His photographs are in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and Los Angeles County Museum of Art, as well as in many other public and private collections. He has published over a dozen books, including House Hunting (2001), Roaming (2004), and Excerpts from Silver Meadows (2013). He is an adjunct professor at California College of the Arts.

A very pretty book, the design and layout (that is). Kind of psyched it's a series and there are others now to look forward to. Felt like I was having a dinner conversation with Mr. Hido (reading this book). Many will probably fault the text because of this. I think it's neat, that with every shot, it's not an expository essay. Kind of insightful in that sort of off-the-cuff way. Like, Mr. Hido alludes, quite frequently, to what to not do, more so than what specifically to do (I think he saves this for the actual classroom). He tells us that it takes a lot of crap pictures to produce one not-crap picture (something many photographers already say, yes, but it's nice to hear it again, especially the way Mr. Hido says it). And he's no different than anyone else (Mr. Hido). The uncertainty of photography is still there. Mr. Hido may have an eye for these kinds of things, especially at this point in his career, but he says to just go out there and shoot, everyday, as often as possible. Don't focus so much on thinking about the shot. Just take the shot. Take several shots, and then sort through them later to identify the best and go from there. A low-key Master photographer with amazing insight. The pictures too, they're really pretty--in a different way.
I had heard of Todd Hido, but was unfamiliar with his work before getting this book. Probably like most photographers, I tend to take mainly relatively bright, colorful, well-exposed and well-composed photos. Hido's photos (the book has one well-reproduced photo per page of text) are quite different: moody, often low-contrast, mysterious, and emotional. Like a good teacher, he does a remarkably informative job of connecting the photos with his motivations in taking them. Houses at night with lighted windows, countryside through rain-splashed windshields, rooms illuminated by empty TV screens, rumpled bedsheets in motels, seemingly distraught women in various stages of undress (never licentious) - this is the psychological landscape that these photographs inhabit. I was fascinated by the difference from my own work, and impressed by Hido's insight and articulateness in discussing his motivations and methods. I have many photo books - few are as interesting as this one.
I enjoyed this book and it inspired me to get out and take more creative photos. It contains several photo essays of Hido's work on the subjects in the title. Each collection of photos is accompanied by Hido's philosophy about photography. However, buyers should be aware; this in not a book on camera gear or technique. It will not tell what gear to buy or how to shoot landscapes, interiors or nudes.
This book by Todd Hido is the most educational and insightful book on photography I have ever purchased. Todd Hido is full of insights, wisdom, and a down-to-earth sense that is uplifting.There is very little fluff in the book-- you can learn tons of practical lessons that you can directly apply to your own photography.Here are some of the lessons I've learned from Todd Hido from the book:1. Todd's work is amazing, in the book he goes straight to the point, of how he things about photography,and what drives him to get the amazing results, excellent print quality with different paper used on cover, really cheap for the wisdom showed, in my opinion if you appreciate his work , this is a must have.
Beautiful, well designed and reasonably priced book. Todd Hido's images are awesome and most of his comments are insightful. I prefer in this same series the book on Alex and Rebecca Webb, but that's a matter of personal taste.
This was a gift to someone who loves his photos. He loved it.
