Love this book for its method of inductive preaching. As Americans we are barraged with deductive communication where you state the main point and then unpack it. This does make for a fairly uninteresting experience for the audience. Lowry offers a wonderful way of looking at sermonizing that flips the whole thing and takes the audience on a journey where you unveil the main point later in the presentation. It is based on good story telling, which is why the method is called narrative preaching. I recommend this book highly for any preacher that wants to become more equipped in his/her preaching style.

I think our friends who rated this book low are individuals who seem to subscribe to a Western-Euro homiletical style. That is to say, it's a direct presentation of information. To each his own.Other cultures have a more storytelling form of preaching and they do not lack in strong theology, doctrine, or actionable life principles.Lowry teaches sermon crafting in manner that engages the pathos and ethos. One great preacher, Noel Jones, put it like this, "Who goes to a movie and the plot is reveal in the first 30 seconds of the film?Why would you stay?" He also gave the analogy of watching "The Lone Ranger" each week. What he said was, "each week you knew the Lone Ranger would get into trouble, get out of trouble, and save the day.You tuned in because you wanted to see how much trouble he got into and how he got out of it." He went on to say, "every Sunday we know Jesus is going win.However, we show up week to experience the way in which gospel gets us out of trouble and Jesus is victorious."Lowry's method engages both ethos and pathos and allows the hearer to participate in the grace of the gospel on both a cognitive and emotive level.We know Jesus wins, Our faith is strengthened by participating in the word by hearing how He does it. In Deuteronomy, Moses gave both legal instruction as well as gave a narrative of the exploits of God ashe prepared Israel to enter into Canaan.No sermon can be a purely intellectual presentation. People take more actions based on feeling that intellect. The Homiletical Plot offers an intriguing approach of narrative preaching that emphasizes story line aspects that appeal to people's expectations and desires. People are engrossed by stories and deeply need and long for preaching, so Lowry proposes a combination of these two. He lays out a form of preaching whereby narrative elements are used in order to maintain the attention of the audience and to present the gospel as it truly is, a reversal or turnabout to our typical ways of thinking. As he says, the gospel is continuous with life after it is turned life upside down. The book is short at just over 100 pages and at the very least will give preachers some ideas for adding more spice and interest to their sermons which can often be boring and didactic.

This book affirmed a lot of my views with homiletics. Preachers need to tell the gospel story in a way to that engages both the church and the unchurched.

I got this book because I saw several sources cite it as seminal in the new narrative form of preaching. When I got it, I was stunned to find that I had already read it and dismissed it. I remember concluding that if he preaches as well as he writes, I'd rather take the nursery duty. However, I later read his follow-on, The Sermon: Dancing the Edge of Mystery and I found that second book to be exceptional. Either read this as an intro to the second or go straight to the second. It's the second book that you must read.

Lowry’s work puts in words what most preachers know intuitively, that great preaching moves fro specific to general. His understanding of plot and the movement is easily understood with a Lutheran Law/Gospel dialectic, and I think can help Lutheran preachers bring a freshness to their preaching that is a long time coming.

This is not what I expected. This is not a USCG copy of comdtinst m16672.2 navigation rules international-inland. This some horsecrap copy of it and it's not complete. Stay away from this. The people that rated this 5 star are either being paid or have never had a copy of the real thing.

Being an ex-mariner I was interested in bringing myself up-to-date on the rules. I had a lot of previous experience at reading, understanding, being tested and using the rules - on the high sea and inland. I found this verison to be useful. The publishers have added a few very helpful additions to the standard USCG version. Some of these adds are the index, online links mentioned, hi-lited corrections and list of recent corrections. Unfortunatley there are still typographical errors. I would have thought that the USCG and/or the publisher (whoever is responsible for them) would have had a proof read before publishing in an effort to eliminate these. These small errors might create a doubt in the readers mind regards the correctness of the whole contents. Having said this I can still recommend this book to all those with a need-to know these rules.

Since the USCG last published the Navigation Rules in 1999 there have been a few NTM additions that have been released which affect COLREGS. The Paradise Cay Publications Inc. version does an outstanding job integrating these NTM into the COLREGS with a gray background box which brings the readers attention immediately to the changes. Additionally, they have provided a slightly more useful table of contents which they refer to as an "Annotated Contents". Most importantly, they provide you with their website, which lists all the NTM which affect your navigation rules, so that you can keep your book updated in the decades to come. Their website also lets you put in your e-mail address which then e-mails you if there are any new NTM that affect your navigation rules.Finally, when comparing the Paradise Cay Publications Inc. version to the Lighthouse Press, ProStar version, there is a clear difference in quality with respect to the diagrams. The Paradise Cay Publications Inc. version has clear diagrams with legible explanations. With the ProStar version it is like you are looking at a blurry copy of a blurry copy; the diagrams are just not as legible, especially the font within the diagrams.If you want a handy to use, up-to-date (and easy to keep that way), and legible copy of the Navigation Rules, go with the Paradise Cay Publications Inc. version.

Good basic list of the rules and probably sufficient for a USCG inspection. That said, for the same price I would purchase (and have purchased ) the full Navigation Rules and Regulations Handbook, US Coast Guard with the rules, explanations and data. It is a much better reference source.

Very thorough, but not for the layman. USCG requires Captains to carry this book or something similar when vessel is used for any type of charter with paying customers. Those that are certified Captains will find this book complete and useful. Those that have not had any type of advanced training for operating a vessel will find this book to be complicated and confusing. For them, would suggest an abbreviated version that gives the basics.

This is NOT the book you are looking for. This is NOT published by the USCG. On page 3 the word "center" is spelled the British way - "centre" you can see it in the online preview if you click on the cover of the book. This is basically a synopsis of the full Rules of Navigation. This is NOT the book the USCG requires vessels over 12 meters in length to carry. If you are a recreational boater, just getting in to boating this book would be an okay place to start but you might as well pay $2 more and get the real deal.

It is always good to have a US Coast Guard book on your boat for quick up dates on rules of the road. Not bad to have sitting out in plan sight in your cabin so if you are boarded by the Coast Guard they know you take your boating seriously. Has a good contents guide so you can find items quickly that you want to familiarize yourself with. I would also recommend "The One-Minute Guide to the Nautical Rules of the Road".

COLREGS has set navigation rules since 1972.This is the Kindle version that I keep on my cellphone. I also have a book version on my boat and at home.Even the smallest boats should have a copy onboard.As an example, it clearly defines right-of-way vessel vs. burdened vessel.One of the most important rules is that ANY vessel overtaking another is burdened, even if the overtaking vessel is a sailboat under sail.There's many rules that every boater should be aware of!!!!

I'm looking at starting my first online based business which is something like a blog. I found this to be a motivational sort of outline of the blog process. I am a beginner, so I'm not qualified to say whether this is comprehensive or not in terms of the scope of blogging. I had hoped to find a book that explains more technical issues. The section on plug-ins for instance, suggests multiple plug-ins for success but it does not break down what the plug-ins do: in terms of their functions or what different qualities or levels of them might exist out there or why I might even want them. It just tells me to find them online and learn how they work. The trouble I have with some expert written books is that the author knows so much they forget what it's like to know nothing and so unintentionally skip over some important issues that prove to be stumbling blocks for novices As I read through the section on plug-ins though, most information felt like it was written in a foreign language. The thought of having to go online and discover what each of these plug-ins do is overwhelming and then return to the text is discouraging. I think what would help the next edition is to add a glossary of terms at the back of the book. That way I could answer my own questions quickly within the book itself and then I have to go outside of it don't lose the momentum I've gained an understanding and concentration.Overall I found this to be motivational and have complete confidence that the author knows what they are writing about. In this regard it's something like Boot Camp – you get thrown in and you got to swim. That's the attitude. Intentional or not.But if you're OK with that learning style you will probably love this – and if you're not OK with that learning style – you probably need to learn to be -in order to become a successful blogger. At least that's my take away and I am going for it. Of course the author invites you to subscribe to his blog, both to keep up with what's the newest and as he explains throughout the book – to grow his own email list which is valuable. Looks like a win-win to me.

You need to know this book is only 39 pages, 1.5 spaced, larger type. The contents read like a powerpoint presentation. Here is one example on how to make your blog post go viral: "If you want to create a blog post that will likely go viral, you want to make sure it has the following qualities: (the following written with bullet points) "Relevant: Your topic should be relevant; Helpful: Your topic should address and provide a solution to a common problem; Well-Organized: You blog post should be well-organized; Personal and Engaging: Your blog post must feel like a conversation with a good friend; and Detailed: Your blog post must contain detailed information on the topic being addressed". That's all there is on creating a viral post. The rest of the guidance is similar. It is not worth the money. You can find better information with one Google search.

I can't believe I spent $15 on this. There is some useful information here, but it's ironically content poor (short and wordy) and very poorly written with typos all over the place. You'll get a few good tips and recommendations, but mainly it's information you can get for free in a couple hours online. I bought this because it had high ratings, and I'm really shocked that it did.

I have some mixed feelings about this book. The promise was to show someone how to replace their income with blogging. Well, yes and no would be my take on this.While Hirsch did briefly outline the mechanics of set up a website and the blogging tools needed to get started, there was not a lot of conversation about the things to look for and about the tools that are needed or how they might help a blogging website. Knowing in a book like this, it would be an impossible task to look at and review each tool, it would have helped the case to talk about the type of tools in depth, along with a strategy for their use. The when, what, and how of a tool like "x" would be useful and the things to look for when tool shopping.Some additional discussion regarding the keywords review tools would have been helpful also. This topic was covered in a few paragraphs, yet the discussion about it deserved a bigger paint brush. This might lead into a bigger discussion about how to use these tools to research things related to what one might want to blog about. Obviously it would be an extensive conversation to try to show someone how to find what they would want to blog about, but a step through of a blogging topic of any sort as an example would have been awesome.As I am not a blogging expert (yet...I did finish the book and plan to start one soon), I will say that I felt he covered all the steps for getting up and running. There are a few typos but the writing style was conversational and fun at times. For the price, it probably is the best outline style book for getting introduced to the things needed to get your own blog up and running.I will say this, Hirsch did take the time to put some reality into the blogging adventure. He talked about the work needed to make a go of it and the time and effort it takes to do this right.Is it the 'end all guide' to blogging? Well that is yet to be seen in my own results. Is it a good reference tool that can help you get started in the crazy world of blogging? It just might be.Well done overall and certainly worth the price.

A spellbinding book and the finest writing of any biography or other non-fiction book I have ever read. The very best of the best and should be required reading for any college student studying literature or science. Pais was a brilliant physicist who worked at the Institute of Advanced Studies at Princeton where he met Einstein. Over his lifetime Pais knew at least 20 of the most famous physicists of the late 19th and 20th centuries. It is a blessing for all of us that he chose to write biographies of several of these men. For me the most interesting aspect of this book is his description of the interactions of Einstein with the other renowned physicists of Einstein's time including Lorenz, Planck, Poincare, Bohr, etc. If you are really interested in science and have taken a course or two in calculus you will be able to follow the math rather well.

This is a scientific biography written by a physicist and friend of Einstein's. Only about 20% of the book is non-technical biography, the rest being a very technical discussion of Einstein's physics, the prior work that influenced it, and its impact. Being a friend of Einstein's, the author puts him in the best possible light. For instance, missing is any reference to the daughter he fathered with his first wife Mileva before they were married, the reasons for their divorce, the events surrounding his relationship with his second wife, etc. (To be fair, before the unsealing of many of Einstein's personal papers, the existence of this daughter was a well-kept secret; one almost definitely unknown to the author of this book.) Of more concern is a lack of very much discussion of most of his non-physics related interactions, so if you want the personal Einstein there are better, more modern, books. However, if you want to know more about Einstein's physics, its development and its impact, then this book is a very good choice, providing that you have the necessary background. The book contains a very extensive timeline of Einstein's life, especially of the events that had a bearing on his technical work. This timeline should be a great reference for Einstein's life as most of the events are referenced to specific days, not just to the year of its occurrence.As noted the author is a physicist and the book is written from that perspective. He goes into Einstein's physics in considerable detail so a physics background is necessary to get the most from this book. For the most part, there is no attempt to provide the necessary scientific background for these discussions, so if you are completely ignorant of thermodynamics, statistical mechanics or theoretical physics in general, you will likely find yourself having to skip over large portions of the text. There are a lot of sentences that contain "it is well known from ...that ...", so if this is not well known to you, you may have to skip over that portion of the text, and perhaps the rest of the chapter. There is also a lot of mathematical notation that is not explained or developed, so you may be lost if you are unfamiliar with it. However, the book is very good for those with the necessary background because it describes how Einstein developed his physics and what influenced this development.I recommend this book for people with some background in physics; the more the better. This might be a five star book for a theoretical physicist, but only a one or two star book for someone with little or none of the necessary background. On average, I rated it as a four star book because, while I do not have all of the necessary background, I had enough to follow the discussion. I am also very interested in the development of Einstein's ideas, so this book was a natural for me. I only wish that I had a better background, because then, for me, it might have been a five star book, so please consider this rating from that perspective.

Reviewers have said it re: this book, it is a great read about Einstein, Relativity and the development of theoretical physics. In this book Pais offers a unique perspective; he worked with Einstein and he knows his physics. If you are interested in these subjects buy this book and read it.My comment is that you really need and Encyclopedia of Physics to try to understand the physics terminology in this book- which should have been included in a page or two containing the nomenclature, but is not.Best suggestion is "The Encyclopedia of Physics" 3rd edition- Besancon editor, Van Nostrand Reinhold Company, in one volume, has a section "Symbols, Units, and Nomenclature in Physics," pages 1199 to 1209, which is very helpful.

I have read now five biographies of this remarkable person and for me the work of Abraham Pais is the best. Several reasons for this: He actually knew Einstein (and Bohr) which gives his subjective musings much more meaning. The historical accounting of the emergence of Einstein's 1905 and 1915 papers on the special and general relativity theories is fascinating and as thorough I think as an historical accounting can be. The sequencing of theory, experiment and the people who did the work leading to the quantum theory and later quantum mechanics is eye opening and quite human in its descriptions. And finally of course is the math - the equations - with which I am not competent, but Pais describes them and develops them again in a historical context and attempts to explain at least some of the variables involved, and their relations, in a text that is at least sometimes accessible to me. At least he tries! This book is not just a remarkable biography of a genius but also a thoroughly entertaining and enlightening explanation of 19th/20th century physics and how we arrived to where we are today.

This is the only book that you really need to read about Einstein. The author is a physicist, so the physics is presented in a technical manner, with background explained in logical and mathematical details. You understand physics better conceptually after reading this book. But even if you skip over the more technical portions of the book, it is still a great read. There is just right amount of biographical depiction of Einstein.The book is especially valuable in clarifying Einstein's position on quantum mechanics.The author shows such great admiration for Einstein that you may wonder if he is a little biased.

I haven't read this book as I ordered it for a gift and had it shipped directly to a friend who is interested in physics and science. I did read the preface online and found it to be very interesting. From the reviews, I felt this book might be a bit too technical for me. I had purchased a more straightforward biography which I enjoyed, however Subtle is the Lord had the same biographical details from what I read in the preface. The friend found the book to be satisfactory.

This book is an example of why I am a hypocrite. Really, and here's why. I write reviews and I constantly tell people how important they are, but then I read a book like this, disagree with many of the other reviews and shake my head at people. In other words, I disregard everything I read and come to my own conclusion. Now about the book:I fell in love with this book just as assuredly as I fell in love with the last book I read by Lynn Cullen (Mrs. Poe.) I believe this book was marketed as a young adult read, but I felt it had much more depth than one usually finds in that category, so if the YA books tend to turn your head away, please give this one a second look anyway.Cornelia is a beautiful, strong and capable character. She has the wit and intellect to handle such a strong role as being Rembrandt's daughter. Lynn Cullen has a way of letting the reader inside the minds of her characters so that they can experience their emotions and see through their eyes. She makes you feel like you are part of the ongoing story rather than just a bystander. I felt that way with this story.I love when you read something and you just know that it must have been important to the author at the time that they wrote it. This book has some absolutely beautiful passages that support a strong story that gets stronger as the book progresses. I enjoyed watching the characters mature and grow throughout the telling.The struggle of Cornelia loving her father even through shame, humiliation and ridicule from others was incredibly well written. I felt sympathy toward her and her situation and by the end of the book, I only wanted what was best for her.The secondary characters in this story are also well penned and help to shed light on Cornelia's character and determination. I loved the setting and the historical research the author did was clearly more than adequate. This book is beautiful, and I would certainly recommend it to anyone interested in the historical period.

Through the early chapters of I AM REMBRANDT'S DAUGHTER, I felt a bit disappointed, as the writing seemed rather simplistic and apparently aimed at a young adult audience. But as the characters evolved and the sense of being right there in 17th Amsterdam blossomed, I became entranced and couldn't put it down. This book was clearly carefully researched, and it was interesting to subsequently learn that the story and the "cast of characters" are almost entirely factual. Cornelia is such a strong, multi-faceted child/young woman, and the detail with which Rembrandt himself is drawn was fascinating. As a reader, I felt as if I crawled inside their world and got to know them. I also learned a great deal more about the Plague, with which I have long been intrigued.If you are a fan of historical fiction and don't need a particularly intellectualized approach to it, I highly recommend this book. On a recent 11 day vacation I read 6 books, and this one compared very well with some other excellent ones.

After reading Tartt's book, The Goldfinch, I had a longing to know Rembrandt Van Rijn better. Lynn Cullen's book, I Am Rembrandt's Daughter, gave you a feel for the Amsterdam of the artist's time. The "bastard" daughter gave you a very harsh view of family life in the painter's home, the art milieu of the time, and the desire to belong in a family or in society from the viewpoint of a young girl. Cullen's easy style of story-telling draws the young and adult readers into another period of time.I found her other book, Mrs. Poe, just as captivating and immediately purchased all her other books. It also helped to understand another book by Nina Siegal's, The Anatomy Lesson, a lot better.

This was a very good historical fiction. I learned to love the characters. Cornelia alternates between her five year old self and her fourteen year old self. Both are important. There is some mystery with not knowing who everyone is and the role they play. But it all ties together in the end.I have to be honest, I bought this book to read based on how much I loved Mrs. Poe. I did not love this book as much. It seemed to be drier. But not dull. I applaud the author for being able to write this book with the Dutch influence in language. That gave the book the authenticity.If you like the art world or historical fiction or are just looking for a good read, then I recommend you read this book.

I read this book in one day. I could not put it down. The writing is smooth, and the harsh yet beautiful world of 17th century Amsterdam is absorbing. The story is realistic, romantic, and heart-tugging. Rich and human, we get a picture of Rembrandt but more so a picture of his family and struggles later in life. We feel his daughter Cornelia's yearning to paint even though society thought her place was to sweep her stoop and clean the dishes and not complain. Utterly imaginative and addictive. The book is okay but it's a slow read. I was a little disappointed after reading Mrs. Poe, another book by Lynn Cullen. I did enjoy the historical parts, though!

I've read this book before in 6th grade 10 years later it still hits me hard. It's a beautiful story pay close attention to the beginning it ties into the ending

Lynn always chooses intriguing subjects to write about that haven't already been explored to the point of boredom. I enjoy the stories but for some reason I always end feeling not completely fulfilled.

Disappointing book, in its lack of depth. It starts well, with an excellent review of Norway's history, background, customs, and travel tips/recommendations.But I found the title to be misleading -- unless by "Norway", you are only interested in the area defined by Oslo, Bergen, Lillehammer. Apparently there's little see farther north. Not a word regarding Trondheim, for example. I had expected more, based on other ratings.The author's use of the word "Snapshot" should be taken literally... :(

This guide seems geared towards older tourists who are most interested in driving everywhere, eating good meals, and sleeping comfortably at night. Does not appear to be useful for active, athletic and adventurous types who want to explore the beautiful outdoors off the beaten path. Furthermore, it contains nothing at all about the northern cities of Trondheim and Tromsø, and the “land of the midnight sun.” It’s hard for me to understand how a guide book could completely leave out one half of a country, as if it had nothing to offer. Quite disappointing, since I ordered this for a family member who is headed to Tromsø in just a few weeks.

Just what I needed, information on Oslo, Bergen, and the Norway-in-a-Nutshell fjord tours. Small enough I can take it with me. It's a couple years old (2015) so I've looked for updated info online both at his site (.../europe/norway/guidebook-updates) and some other basic transit info at links he provides. Rick comes through again.

Good overview of Norway, especially Oslo. Coverage of the rest of the country is hit & miss. Coastal areas and fjords are better represented than is the center of Norway. I would rather have had more detail and, on reflection, should have purchased the more thorough book. But this one did help me use the trains to areas I've never before been to, and enjoy a tremendously beautiful country.

I purchased this book because I planned on spending a day in Oslo during a trip to Northern Europe. I didn't have a chance to do any research before my trip and I ordered this book thinking it would be better than nothing. This book was a great guide. I felt that it guided me toward the important sights in Oslo and I found the information that it gave to be very helpful. There were free tours where he said there would be, the hours of operation of certain places were all correct, and I was able to read a good deal about some of the sites that I visited in this book. I highly recommend this book if you are traveling to Oslo. Unfortunately, I cannot speak to the rest of the book as I didn't have chance to venture outside of Oslo, but I would highly recommend it if you are traveling to Oslo.

Covered Oslo well but not the rest of the country. Trip Advisor forums were more helpful.

Edited to update: I wrote this review below while still doing my research on our 16 day Norway trip and I'm back to update. Our trip consisted of Andalsnes (not covered in this book), Alesund (not covered in this book), Geirangerfjord (not covered in this book), Bergen (good coverage, we scanned the pertinent sections into our phones), the Flam Railway (covered but he puts a higher importance on it than I do), Balestrand (again good coverage) and 5 days in the Lofoten Islands (not covered at all in this book). I stand by my review that I was very disappointed with the lack of coverage of this country. However, the small portion of the book we did use did give Rick's usual reliable and accurate information. Everything below this is what I wrote before we left.I've been to Europe 4 times and every time used a Rick Steves' guide book as my main source of planning. Though I am still in my planning stages for Norway, I am already disappointed with this guide.He leaves out large portions of the country including all of the northern areas. Gives way too much attention to Oslo, book space that could be devoted to more fjord coverage, the main reason people travel to Norway.He has a short paragraph on Pulpit Rock with no real valuable information on the logistics and doesn't mention kjeragbolten at all.I will use this guide but will be doing a lot more research on the Internet this time to plan probably half of my trip due to the lack of information in this guide. I can't speak to the accuracy or helpfulness of its contents until I return.

Rick Steve’s once again proves that he writes the best travel guides available . The detail he provides is extraordinary but I really love the way he has the book organized . It’s intuitive - making it very easy to cruise around the book while you are planning . I also bought Lonely Planets Norway guide and I tried to use it but found it confusing and poorly laid out . This is my 5th Rick Steve’s travel book and he doesn’t let me down . Hey Rick - write books about regions or special events . We are planning a trip to Oktoberfest and want to know all the ins and outs like only you can do . Please ?😄
