The reason for my rating is the material covers what was discussed in my classes. I like the way the manual has specific questions and gives an explanation as to why an answer was selected. It was easy to understand the questions as well as the answers. It helps to know "why" even if you know or don't understand the answer. Once an answer is explained it's much easier to retain the reasoning behind the question in my opinion. Understanding an answer is validation to the individual studying the material; although an individual does have the option of viewing answers after each practice test. I have several highlights of the test manual that were helpful. The user's guide to this course was organized; clarity of the questions was helpful, the outlined content of the manual was adequate and consistent, examples shown are useful and the content in the manual has made me feel more confident as I prepare for the NBCOT-COTA Exam.

I like the setting of the questions and how they give you explanation of the questions. I am not sure what to expect on the exam so far but I like how those questions are set up to make you think for yourself, and then at the end they explain why they chose that answer.

they are very helpful, explain and use simple vocabulary to understand.I understand much better the definition of each disorder, dysfunction, or illness and the book show me some strategies to apply in some scenarios.The test practice are helpful because when you have the wrong answer they explain the right one. Alan definitely has a lot of consulting experience. He comes off a bit brash and arrogant at times, but in a way that you'd like to be with 30+ years under your belt. For example, he describes subcontractors as "the delivery people...who are a dime a dozen" as if they are almost sub-human, even saying "don't let them read my book."The book has some great information, BUT, it is incredibly verbose. What Alan takes 10 pages to describe could easily be boiled down into 10 sentences or less. This book could easily be half its size. I find myself waiting for him to get to the point multiple times. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the information he is conveying, I just wish he could do it more succinctly and matter-of-factly.My other complaint is that there is a noticeable amount of content seemingly copied wholesale either from or into his other books. Sometimes it's a paragraph here and there, but occasionally it seems like an entire chapter is repurposed from another of his books word for word. He even uses the same euphemisms over and over in all of his books, sometime with only slightly different context.Other than that, however, there is good information here for anyone looking to get away from hourly billing and into a value-based system, so it has value in that regard.

I think the writer is full of sh... I think this book is based on Weiss sharing his accomplishments and bragging about them. Some of his ideas don't even make sense. I bought this book for a class and it was a pain to read. Many of my classmates shared the same sentiment as we had to review each chapter throughout the semester. I would say buy it only if its a requirement for a class. Don't buy it if you're trying to learn how to become a million dollar consultant. You won't​ get too much from this book. sorry.

This was a book I had to read for a class I'm taking. I was actually looking forward to reading this right up to the point where I actually started reading. Weiss comes across as awfully condescending towards any consultant who isn't running their consulting business the same way he does. He also contradicts himself throughout the book. In one chapter he talks about dropping the bottom 10% of your business and a few chapters later he talks about how you can mine your bottom business for more work. He also mentions that most new businesses fail (thanks for the tip) and then suggests that new businesses use a second mortgage for financing. Great tip. Most businesses fail so let's put our house on the line.The other big issue for me is that this book just seems so dated. I realize the first edition was in the early 90's but the last edition was in 2009. Not only has the technology moved past him (he was suggested technology that was dated even for 2009) but his whole approach seems to be stuck in that 70's and 80's mindset. What worked for him in the past won't work for him now. Worse, many of his suggestions will not serve new consultants well and, since that's kind of the point of this book, that's problematic.In the end, the best thing I can say about this book is that I got it used.

I have been in consulting for some 15 years and have learned hard lessons by trial and error. I wished I had found this book when I made my first attempt to consulting 15 years ago. The book is packed with the best advice to really build a million dollar practice. I have started already to cut fat, my two former partners are gone, do not need them to work, do not need to share my income with them, from now on if I need help it will be on a project basis. Though there are lots of advice and wisdom in this book. I found the chapter on Value Based fees to be the best part of the book. I had come to some practical methods of determinig my pricing, I have always used ROI to sell my projects, but I have not used the ROI to come up with a decent pricing, always have been able to give a 10-1 ratio from every dollar I have received or more, but now are staring to see the benefits of selling big tag projects to CEO's directly, without the need to put hourly-or -per diem fees.I recommend to all to read throughly the parts on answering objections. Those are great advice and will be very useful to change the minds of CEO's and avoid being down priced by the peanut counters that all finance dept. have.This book and a great book on negotiation from Herb Cohen - You can negotiate anything! will be a good match to get you moving specially if you are new in this business. Another and very important book for start ups is: The Four Steps to the epiphany by Steve Blank. I wished I had read it first before doing anything, basically what Blank tells you in the book is test your product/service idea first with real prospects in a real market. Find out if your product is really great and determine the minimum requirements to get to market successfully, do some iterations and test your business model and make sure there are customers ready to buy your product, and do your work before launch, this will help you avoid going to increase the stats of the failure start ups. This quote is great: most of start ups do not fail due to technology, they fail because lack of customers, I can tell you this is absolutely true. Forget the social networks, for consultants you need to meet real people and decision makers who have problems that you can solve, in the social networks what you will find is lots of people looking for free advice, consulting is not a charity. Unless you want to consult pro-bono for some real and good cause which is OK, but first make money..then else. Thanks

This is probably the worst text book I have ever read. This guy is 100% full of himself. I only purchased it because it was a requirement for my college capstone. I now wish I would have rented it. Since I can't re-sell it for more than .50 cents, I'll probably keep it in my hunting bag to use as an emergency toiletry product.

I recommend this for new and senior constants alike. Though somewhat dated, a new consultant will get fantastic foundational insights. For the more senior consultant, it's a great reminder of how to approach your business better, how to perfect your approach and apply your own learnings in new ways.

Erik Durschmied takes that premise and expands on it in “The Hinge Factor,” as he examines how some of the major events in world history have been shaped by such things as, well, in one case, an actual handful of nails, the lack of which led to the French losing the Battle of Waterloo.Durschmied examines 17 events, most of them military encounters, and examines the course of each event in detail, including his description of what he calls the Hinge Factor, the one occurrence that ensured the eventual result. Some of these events are quite well known, like Waterloo, the Trojan Horse, and the Charge of the Light Brigade, while others are rather obscure, even for those fairly familiar with military history. In each case, he devotes some 20 or 30 pages describing the military actions leading up to the encounter and then the conduct of the battle itself, along with its aftermath. He also poses (but doesn’t answer) some provocative questions, asking how the battle might have turned out if one side or the other had done something different.Durschmied’s style and approach are somewhat of a mixed bag. Although he does his best to describe the tactics and troop movements in lay terms, this is still a book that will likely be better appreciated by military buffs. He names troops and weapons but doesn’t always describe them too well, so reading that two brigades were opposed by one division won’t mean that much for those who aren’t aware of the strengths of the units. And, since the battles he describes range from the Crusades to the First Gulf War, the weaponry and effective strategy involved change drastically.One of Durschmied’s strengths is his characterization of the various commanders involved. He isn’t shy about criticizing generals for being lazy, vain, overly timid, foolhardy, or downright stupid, and his descriptions of the battles generally back him up. The author does adopt one annoying convention of recreating supposed conversations in which the commanders discuss what they are going do. I appreciate his attempts to make the book more accessible to the general public, but obviously no one was recording what the Crusaders said before they went into battle. Simply stating facts (supported by contemporary accounts) or expressing his opinions of what might have been discussed would, in my view, have made for a better book.When it comes to Durschmeid’s main thesis, that much of human history turns on a more or less chance event, the author is less successful in proving his point. In some cases, such as one battle which was actually a friendly fire incident in which various units of the same army started shooting at each other over possession of a barrel of schnapps, it’s pretty clear that the “hinge” led to the eventual result. In others, such as the first Gulf War, the best hinge he can come up with was Saddam Hussein’s miscalculation in invading Kuwait in the first place. He also is on shakier ground in ascribing long term consequences to some of these events. Yes, Napoleon could easily have won at Waterloo and changed European history significantly, but in some cases, the side that wins the battle gains little. The mistakes that cost the members of the Light Brigade their lives, even if avoided, wouldn’t have affected the Crimean War very much at all.I should point out that this is the second edition of Durschmied’s book, written in 2015, following an earlier edition from 2000. I don’t know exactly what changes were made, but the author did add a second prologue briefly discussing 9/11 and the Second Gulf War and its aftermath. Ironically, that material better illustrates his point (a handful of men armed with box cutters changed the entire face of the Middle East) than some of his original chapters do.“The Hinge Factor” is a difficult book to rate, because its appeal will probably vary depending on the audience. Military buffs will probably enjoy it a great deal, while more general audiences may get confused by some of the details (more maps would definitely have helped). Even those who enjoy Durschmeid’s description of battles, generals, and tactics will probably find that he loses focus on his main theme at times in his zest for getting into the heat of battle. But he brings up many fascinating bits of trivia many people will enjoy (the Trojan Horse was successful, not because of the handful of Greeks inside, but because the Horse was so big the Trojans had to take apart the gates of the city to get it inside, thus leaving themselves wide open for a sneak attack). Since “The Hinge Factor” bills itself as more of a general interest book and isn’t that strong in demonstrating its main premise in several chapters, I am giving it a marginal three-star recommendation for general audiences, with the caveat that military history fans will get more out of it.

Fairly easy read based on the premise of “what if” a particularly bad military decision or inaction hadn’t occurred. All good stuff, none controversial, more re-affirming what others have identified as historically altering moments.What is annoying is the inconsistency of quoting foreigners speaking their native tongue. Some Europeans are quoted as such with an accompanying English translation, some are not- even when the quote is at some length, leaving those of us trying to master just one tongue unnecessarily in the dark. It is not that deep a subject. Russians, Arabs and those from the Far East are deemed honorary English and are quoted as such.A small point, but as the book ably points out, sometimes it is the smaller choices that have the largest impact.

Mr. Durschmied's brilliant encapsulation of the relevant facts that underscore his conclusions about each historic military outcome has stood the test of time. This was my second reading of this work. In the interim I read several books about the events he summarizes. Some of the other books left out several key details mentioned by Durschmied. If you are a fan of Victor Hugo's "The Battle of Waterloo", this is a spoiler alert.This book may pique your interest in reading more about some of these events. I will be reading Erik's other books which I am sure will not disappoint.

Stopped reading less than halfway through. The author's choices as to what constituted chance and stupidity lost me at the battle of Antietam. Much more enjoyed Victor Davis Hansen's "Savior Generals" which chronicled how having the right man in the right place at the right time saved the day.

Interesting account of how major world events changed ("hinged") around a single or short series of mistakes/luck. The author seemed well informed on the historical events in the book and able to define the change of fortune that turned a current event into history. He does include a very short "what if" speculation on alternative outcomes but refreshingly not overdone in that respect.

A great book showing how chance and stupidity impact specific events throughout history, and how they impact the larger course of history. Examples include the Charge of the Light Brigade, finding plans in a cigar case at Antietam, and miscommunication at Waterloo. Enlightening to the casual history student, or someone teaching history to middle or high school.Minus 1 star because this should be a much more encompassing book; way too short!

EXCELLENT!!! the chapter on "Joseph II, by the grace of God Emperor of Austria," ("with great apprehension") was hilarious puts me in mind of Thomas B. Costain's Plantagenets "with great unwisdom." Loved the book. great introduction to reading military books.

I have always been amazed how being in the right place and time could affect your life for better or worse. One or two seconds difference could save your life. On a grand scale, throughout history, proper timing and positioning could have saved millions of lives or changed our historical path completely as you so aptly pointed out in this book. Well written examples of what happened but could have had such a profoundly different outcome if decisions by those in authority had been timed and coordinated oh so slightly differently. What if?????

Overall, I've been happy with Fodor's Travel books, but I was very disappointed in this one. I was interested in information on nature attractions and activities in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Western Maine. The book provides very little of that, nothing that I didn't already find on the web, but rather a bunch of information about lodging and restaurants.

This book was a great help for us while visiting the New England States. Since we weren't sure what we wanted to see or where to visit, we paged through this book and ended up seeing much more then we would have without using the book. We had a great vacation.

Such helpful articles about where to go!! This will be packed into our bags for our trip this fall!!

Gaddis has produced a very profound, insightful work on George Kennan‘s Grand Strategy. Kennan promulgated this strategy through the Long Telegram, his famous writing as author „X“ in the journal, Foreign Affairs, and in position papers of the Policy Planning Staff under George Marshall and Dean Acheson. The reader walks with Kennan through the 1920‘s when, under the Rogers Act, the man in his young 20‘s enters the very first generation of a newly established class of professional, career officers of America‘s foreign service. The reader, with the young Kennan, learns to love Russian culture and history as the State Department sponsors his immersive graduate studies in Russian language and history combined with work-study programs in consulate offices. Kennan, like Dean Acheson, was present at the creation. Kennan underestimated his own power of influence, both at the end of World War II, the outset of the Cold War, and over the seventy years remaining in his life when a grateful nation kept seeking his counsel despite his seeking of scholarly refuge from the empyrean heights of the Advanced Institute at Princeton University. Kennan’s greatness emerged in strategic vision promulgated with force of language shaped by Shakespeare, John Donne and Edward Gibbon. A very inward, reflective, even spiritual man, Kennan always felt responsible towards children and posterity; he always took other persons very seriously in their humanity. These spiritual qualities combined with poetic powers that found new forms of strategic expression patterned for new world situations as they arose — his foresight as early as the 1940’s of Communism’s ultimate fall under its own weight due to the unwieldiness of the Soviet Union’s far-flung empire; his opposition to the Vietnam War as well as the bombing of Hanoi; as well as his proposal in the 1980‘s of strategic arms reduction (to replace arms limitation) with an ultimate goal to eliminate weapons of mass destruction overall. Gaddis does not shrink from candid review of Kennan’s considerable limitations and faults. Gaddis’ work is well-balanced. This work should be read in conjunction with the very profound work of Robert Beisner, „Dean Acheson and the Cold War“.

It would be next to impossible to read about the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union without George Kennan's name appearing. The man's containment argument carried the day in Washington D.C., helped our nation avoid war with the U.S.S.R., and, therefore, prevented needless deaths on both sides. For about three decades, I've always wondered why this guy? Sure, Mr. Kennan was acknowledged as a very smart person when it came to Russian history, but it's difficult to believe he was the only big brain kicking around D.C. that had a firm grasp of the Russian mindset as well as Bolshevism.Mr. Gaddis does an excellent job in, not only explaining Mr. Kennan's importance and how he became indispensable, but also the full measure of the man. Warts and all. The author rightly had concerns about taking on a biography about such a thin-skinned man while the dude was still alive. Mr. Gaddis explains the conditions which were put in place for him to attempt the biography. His intimate access to Mr. Kennan's boatloads of written arguments; the man's family, friends and foes; and most importantly exclusive use of Mr. Kennan's life-long personal diary culminates into not a gushy lovefest but a very balanced, absorbing biography. Mr. Gaddis's book certainly deserved the Pulitzer Prize. Like everyone else, Kennan had qualities that were admirable and other aspects of his personality that were either annoying or made him a good candidate for being hit on the side of the head with an iron skillet.The story is about a brilliant wonk whose ability to right cogent, poetic assessments that influenced policy makers is what separated him from the other bright bureaucrats. Man oh man, the guy rubbed elbows with the big guys; Presidents Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Nixon, Bush 41, and Clinton as well as General MacArthur, Secretary of States George Marshall, Dean Acheson, and George Shultz. Then there's Robert Oppenheimer, Mikhail Gorbachev... look, my fingers are getting tired in listing all the power brokers. You get the picture. Also, his love of Russian history and culture and ability to speak perfect Russian made him a cut above the rest. At his core, Mr. Kennan had an oddly wonkish heart and the unstable emotions of your stereotypical artist. The man was completely, laughably clueless about contemporary American culture.In the week I was reading "George F. Kennan," not one person who asked me had any idea who he was. That's a shame. Mr. Kennan strongly believed that style was as important as substance. He joined the two and made himself into a valuable asset. Mr. Gaddis seems to have taken the same attitude while writing his Kennan biography and the result is an outstanding work which deserves a wide readership.

Gaddis is well know to have an Encyclopedic knowledge of the Cold War. He also had Kennan's blessings in writing this biography. Gaddis does an adequate job of reviewing Kennan's life - but then tends to be more of a perfunctory emotional quality to this work than should have been present with someone as dynamic as George Kennan. This is the official biography by the official biographer - but many of the qualities of Kennan's spirit seem to me missing. I strongly suggest that folk actually read Kennan to pick up these missing pieces.Gaddis though has written some fine work on the Cold War, although I strongly disagree with his take on the Truman Doctrine.

A terrific piece of scholarship and fine writing, exploring the life of the man who as much as anyone else, including President Truman, set the tone for American containment policy toward the Soviet Union. This is an important book, and a great choice of subject on the part of Professor Gaddis, preeminent Cold War scholar.

An interesting work. . . . It speaks of how conditions can be changed and perhaps improved by "nudging" people. Rather than "beating up" on people, subtly nudge them. Fascinating reading and very provocative. Is nudging good? Or manipulative?The authors, Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein, faculty at the University of Chicago, define a "nudge" as (Page 6): ". . .any aspect of the choice architecture that alters people's behavior in a predictable way without forbidding any options or significantly changing their economic incentives." Indeed, they define their perspective as "libertarian paternalism." They believe in freedom but also wish to use "nudges" to induce people to improve their health, and live longer and happier.One simple example? Has any male ever used a urinal with a fly painted onto it? This simple nudge reduces "spillage" by 40% as males involuntarily try to hit the "target." In the process, there is a benefit, less smelliness and messiness in the restroom.The book applies the nudge argument to investments, health, school choice, organ donation, the environment, marriage, and so on. In each case, they try to show how nudges and libertarian paternalism can improve the quality of life of individuals as well as providing social benefits.Questions do arise, as the authors themselves admit. Is this a manipulative approach? Do we subtly manipulate people into doing things that they might not voluntarily wish to do? Thaler and Sunstein address these issues. Each reader will have to determine how well they succeed. A provocative and fascinating work, well worth reading.

The point is very clear. We all have preconditioned manners of making decisions and instead of having to choose from thousands of options it makes more sense to nudge us to a more common ground than to leave us confused and frustrated. This of course is on condition that there is pure transparency of all the options. If you have ever read any books about psychology or studied the subject or have read Daniel Kahneman’s book Thinking Fast and Slow, than this book will not provide you a lot of new insight. It looks at a lot of old and some recent researches about how people who think they’re making rational decisions are in reality not and have pretty predictable decision patterns. The book then goes on to recommend how society could be better if we followed some type of Paternal Libertarianism where the ones providing choses like Insurance companies or government services nudge persons to make smarter decisions while being transparent of all the options and not hiding any of them. I agree with them almost 100%. Most of their suggestions and examples make sense as long as the ones nudging are 100% transparent. If you’re anything like me, you will say the book is just okay and you will not be blown away by any Wow moments. So you can either read the book or save time and just speak to someone who read the book and have a nice long discussion with them.

Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness by Richard H. Thaler and‎ Cass R. Sunstein has a simple premise. Unlike classical economic theory, where people are fully rational and always do things in their best interest, we are really lazy, uninformed, and unmotivated. We make bad decision because we lack information, or space out, or are too stupid to investigate what descisions will make our lives better.Intuitively, this view appeals to me. One example: create online retirement forms with a default setting which generally benefit employees, rather than no setting at all. Most people don't really understand their retirement plans, if they even have one. So make their laziness work for them.Of course, the “Libertarian Paternalism” proposed in this work is problematic. Who makes the choices that we get to choose from? Can’t "they" rig the system for their benefit and not ours?Despite this, I think the author’s view of human nature is sound, and can lead to more intelligent discussions about what we, as a species and individuals in that species, can hope to accomplish.

No wonder Richard Thaler's work won him the Nöbel Prize in Economics! Built on the earlier work founding Behavioral Economics by Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tvarsky which de-throned the "Rational Actor" model of humans in Classical Economics, Kahneman and Tvarsky, joined by Paul Slovic, showed human thinking is hard-wired in evolution, beset by Heuristics and Biases which are provably non-rational. They answer the question often provoked by observations of others clearly acting against their self-interest. There has been 35 years of continuing research in this area, a Nöbel for Kahneman, even showing that Capuchin monkeys are hard-wired native economic thinkers and choosers. We act, as evolution indicates, for action in the short term, primarily in the lower level, fast thinking brain and with heuristics/algorithms sufficient to meet the test of "Probably Approximately Correct", with book of this name by Leslie Valiant. Humans are not randomly irrational, but predictably irrational, which is what makes The Nudge work effectively.Thaler gives us an alternative to formal control systems for humans based on rules, laws, behavioral/operant conditioning, "shoulds, oughts, musts". Humans ignore or rebel against the rules, and deny consequences for short term gains.Thaler's "Nudge" is the alternative, assuming people will act in their self-interest without depending or using rationality or reason. Thaler shows in his reserach and presents in his book how to shape choice using the newly discovered laws of predictable irrationality, or choice shaping.
