A friend of mine recommended this book to me because I have an 11th-grader who is in the college exploration, list-making process. I found this book very instructive and valuable for a few reasons. This book has very practical, rooted-in-experience (both personal and professional) suggestions for having conversations with your child on the topics of their high school and college education and the importance of early work experiences. As a similarly-aged parent who also majored in history and also ended up in technology, I have also grappled with the fact that the jobs my kids will have are not created yet -- so, how to best prepare them? I found the structure of the book to be very clear and helpful -- Part 1 - Who are you? with an emphasis on self-assessment, the meaning of work, etc. Part II has 6 chapters on specific fields -- I was able to pick and choose among these chapters and selected the ones most relevant to my child but I also appreciate that this will differ for every child, so a variety was valuable. Part III How Will You Get to Where You Want to Go? is very practical and instructive especially for families and prospective college students who are not familiar with the process. Having worked in higher ed, I have talked to so many students and families who are not aware of the process and the options -- and one's choices can have life-long financial consequences. I really enjoyed the personal stories and anecdotes of the two authors and believe that parents of all income ranges can benefit from reading this book and that students would benefit from having adults/parents initiate these types of conversations. I have already recommended this book to multiple friends and will continue to do so. Well done.
This is a most helpful and readable book for parents, students and those who assist them. The book is loaded with detailed information to help with tough decisions about colleges, careers, and ways to cope with the phenomenally high costs of higher education. I really appreciate that the book offers hardheaded questions for readers to ask themselves, with lots of information about answers, and deals with the ever troublesome conflicts about humanities vs. (or in addition to) STEAM; making a living in the arts; financial questions; and so on and so on' considering the odd directions that the job market could take. Information like this was sorely lacking in my generation's time, but perhaps was less necessary.I gave a copy of this book to a young friend who is the first in his family to attend college, and wanted to make wise choices for himself. He found the book a bit daunting at first, but then, extremely thought provoking and helpful; particularly the chapter called, "How can you try on your career Interests?" He also appreciated the authors' entries about their own experiences. This book is an excellent companion to this whole process, offering realism, lots of information, and much food for thought. Most highly recommended.
Any parent who is helping their child through the college selection/life planning process will find this book to be invaluable. Students who are trying to learn about the best way to prepare for college will also greatly benefit by reading and practicing the steps outlined in "Who Do You Think You Are?". With the cost of attending college at an all-time high, doing everything to help your student select an appropriate post high school trajectory is more important than ever! For most families, long gone are the days when a student can enter a college or university unprepared, with no idea who they are, and float around trying to find the right path while paying tuition. "Who Do You Think You Are?" outlines the steps that will help students more clearly define a path to a satisfying career and life. Understanding the questions to ask, the tools to use, and preparation needed to succeed in career happiness and fit can greatly shorten the path to achieving career goals and dreams. This book is an easy read that shares the knowledge Smith and Fanning have acquired through years of study, research, and innovation in the student success arena.
I have been a high school counselor for almost twenty years and there are few quality books available in career counseling for teens. Who Do You Think You Are? is one of these rare quality books. It's excellent. What I especially like is the approach the authors take recognizing a career journey is an individual path defined by the unique wants and needs of each student. No personal agendas are pushed and the authors guide the reader toward a number of helpful free career related resources. We added this book to our college and career counseling library and are now recommending to students and parents regularly. A solid five stars!
This book is informative, user-friendly, and relevant to all parents and students who are looking for guidance in college AND career planning. I particularly appreciate Smith's and Fanning's emphasis on the importance of exploring ALL of the possible pathways toward success, post-high school -- not JUST a traditional, 4-year college track. As a college and career specialist, I look forward to organizing a book study utilizing this book for parents, students and other educators in the near future.
