On the one hand, it's not a bad first book about Native Americans for the pre-K/Kindergarten crowd. My 5-year-old enjoys it. On the other hand, the descriptions of the cultures are rather shallow, so it certainly should be supplemented. But with what? There is so little out there for children on this topic. And finally, I know not everyone will agree with me, but the end when the "people from England" arrive, it comes across as patronizing of the Native Americans (they frightened the new settlers, but they turned out to be honest and generous...), and very quickly skips straight to the existence of modern-day reservations without mentioning the ugliness that brought us to this point and the sometimes grim reality now... I mean, I know it's a children's book, but I'm of the opinion that more people don't take this aspect of American history seriously partly because they weren't taught the full story as children (which communicates that it isn't very important).
I purchased this book based on the other positive reviews, planning to use it in a unit on Pre-Columbian America. Unfortunately, it contains at least one glaring error -- and if I can spot one major error, I imagine there must be others. The Plains Indians didn't have horses until after they obtained them from the Spanish, so the entire section on the Plains Indians is wrong.
I thought there would be more information in this book. The print is large, which is fine, but it is very short and just a very basic overview. I could get the same info from printing a page from the Internet. The pictures are good, but that's about it.
I bought this book to counteract the schools European centric model of teaching American history. It's a wonderful book with clear detailed descriptions of different tribes and a great start to our history teachings. It showed my daughter how vast and different the tribes were across the land and that America has a history that begins before the Europeans came here.
Informative with great illuatrations. I did find that the writing is a bit too simplified and sort of talks down to children. But it is still a nice book. I preferred Pictureback's North American Indians, which is richer in content, for the same age of child.
Talks about different groups/tribes of Indians based on geographical location and how that affected their lifestyles. Great visuals! A lot of details!
I teach a 4's preschool class and recently got this book for my kids. I was worried it would be too wordy or adult for them. However, the book is split into sections that teach about the different American Indians. So every few days, we would talk about another tribe. It was a great way to compare and contrast them. My kids love maps, so we also pulled that into the equation as well. Overall, this book was the best one I found...and it was very informative and, in small chunks, was great for my preschoolers!
Educational and easy read, great addition to the home library. This books tells of the various tribes of different regions and their differing ways of life, as well as their similarities.
