Gr 5-10–In this addition to the series, readers join Pati Medici and her team in their quest to study tapirs in the world's largest wetland, the Pantanal Wetlands of Brazil. Although its appearance may lead some to suppose that the tapir falls somewhere near elephants or hippopotami in the family tree, this flexible-snouted, hoof-toed tropical creature is most closely related to rhinoceroses and horses. Medici has dubbed the tapir “the gardener of the forest” for its critical role in maintaining foliage by ingesting fruits and excreting the seeds elsewhere, but little else is known about this vanishing species. By observing and trapping the animals to outfit them with radio collars or microchips and collect samples including blood and ticks from infestations, Medici's team hopes to better understand their lifestyles to enhance conservation efforts. Although in-text pronunciation guides are included for some Portuguese names and select scientific terminology is explained, no glossary is provided, and many of the exotic birds discussed are not shown. Following each chapter are several pages of related information with text and photographs placed on top of a marbled background with shadows that can make the text difficult to read in some places. A list of several websites and YouTube videos is included, and the index differentiates between text and photographic references. A beautiful introduction to the elusive tapir and Brazil's Florida-sized wetland, the Pantanal. Sy Montgomery has written another wonderful book for budding and armchair field scientists, and she and photographer Nic Bishop both wind up having a tapir named for them by the end of the book.This volume in my favorite book series focuses more on the techniques and attendant frustrations of field work in wild places--there is a lot of discomfort and delay, but in the end the team of scientists, vets, scouts, and authors gain a lot of information on the target species, the Lowland Tapir. Keeping with this focus on fieldwork, the whole team is introduced in some detail, and one feels for the guy in charge of shooting a tapir with tranquilizer darts as he grows restless to capture a tapir that way, as opposed to a cage trap.There's even a sidebar on the Giant Armadillo that makes you wish for a book on that amazing species, still here from prehistory! There's mention of a Pink Fairy Armadillo too. But the tapir and the Pantanal (with all its ticks) are the stars of the show here, and the author's usual sure-handed prose touches make this another rewarding book to read as an adult, juvenile, or to share with a young child. Tapirs are unsung and amazing. Leader of the expedition, tapir scientist Pati Medici, also has a TED Talk for those who are interested in more.

Although this book is non-fiction aimed at young people, it is set up by the authors as a mystery thriller complete with fascinating cast of characters, suspense, and the excitement of the chase. The remote and nature-rich Pantanal wetland of South America is explored with beautiful photos and revealing descriptions. The book explains what tapirs are, where they live, a little of their history, and how they are related to other animals. We learn why they are endangered, and why it is so important and challenging to study them.Both traditional and cutting edge scientific methods are used used to study the tapirs and these are also explained in the book. The woman who leads the study, Patricia Medici, is an inspiring role model for any young, aspiring natural scientist.Highly recommended for 5th grade and above. Adults interested in nature and endangered species will also enjoy it. It makes for a wonderful coffee table book/conversation piece as well.

I purchased this book to find some good roadmap templates and examples. As I browsed through, few such examples existed. Bummer.Nonetheless, the book is a wonderful deep dive. On one level, it’s about product strategy. On a second level, it’s about how to effectively get your roadmap through an organization.I’m a grizzled 30 year product development exec. & I learned a lot from this book.

Developing roadmaps for products and services has become a prioritization and political nightmare for most organizations. This book provides a simple, yet appropriately sophisticated, approach to cutting through that mess. The authors recommend tackling roadmaps with a more flexible and realistic process. By decoupling the roadmap from feature lists and product release cycles they have provided product leaders (and teams) with a tool that delivers value to the entire product org. My feeling is that this book could become the go-to manual for product planning in the months and years ahead.

The product roadmap is one of product management’s most commonly requested document and the most misunderstood. Executives reference the roadmap to monitor their pet projects. Sales people use the roadmap with customers to show features to be delivered in the future (“and if you buy today, I can guarantee these features next week!”) Marketing teams use the roadmap to align product releases with industry events. I highly recommend this book for readers interested in understanding the value of product roadmaps, and those tasked with creating them.

The New York Subway turns 100! On October 27, 1904, people in the City of New York walked down flights of stairs, paid a five-cent fare, and for the very first time rode beneath the city's streets aboard New York's very first subway. One of the most fascinating aspects of subway history is the evolution of rolling stock, from the original cars of 1904 to the most modern of today. The punch-out models in the Subway Punch-out Book represent sixteen different subway (and elevated) cars that have provided service in New York over the past hundred years. They range from "high-tech" R-143 units that have recently entered service, to older cars that have not carried revenue passengers for almost 50 years. Many of these vintage cars can still be experienced in a real-life setting at the New York Transit Museum, in Brooklyn. Here, in a genuine subway station, a wonderful collection of rolling stock has been restored and preserved so future generations will be able to understand something about the subway tradition whose centenary we now celebrate.

Excellent example of the printer's craft. Perfect color, binding, die-cuts. Very impressive. But the subway cars are not drawn to scale. A 60' IRT car is virtually identical to a 75' BMT car. The widths should also be different but they are not. If you can live with that, fine. But if you're interested in accuracy, look elsewhere.

Lots of interesting history facts, and fun to assemble.

This is my go-to birthday present for 3 year old boys. I've bought 4 so far and the boys have loved it.

As described, heavy duty book with fun cut out pop outs. Good information inside.

This book is a great book for any kid who loves trains and in particular subways.. I found them easy to put together and they look nice on my book shelf

Jericho and Indy are stumbling a bit since neither has ever had a relationship to speak of let alone a marriage so while their sexual chemistry is off the charts all the other aspects of marriage seem to be harder to navigate. Ms. March had me transfixed from start to finish and now I can’t wait for the conclusion in book three.Indy has had to overcome so many things in her relatively young life so automatically trusting people doesn’t come easy for her. Hearing different things about her new husband causes her to doubt what he tells her and if his motives are true but she will do what she has to do for her family all the while hoping her heart doesn’t get trampled in the process.Jericho wasn’t supposed to develop feelings for his wife. The marriage was supposed to be part of a deal where they both gained something in the end. Now that the stakes have changed Forge is ready to change all his rules for her.Meghan takes us on another sexy ride through the Mediterranean with action, adventure and intrigue around every corner. Long time fans of her work will recognize a few familiar names and faces that make cameos in this book too. Trust me when I say this is one trilogy you won’t want to miss and one of my most favorite of hers to date!

If you are following my reviews, you know that I loved the first book in the Forge Trilogy, Deal With The Devil. Well, it is not a surprise that I was even more excited about the release of the second book of the series after the cliffie in the first. And ohhh, did it deliver. In some ways, the second book was even better that the first. It was still fast paced, filled with danger lurking around every corner. But there was also romance and super sexy scenes that definitely made me swoon.I had the chance to get my hands on the audio book for Luck of the Devil and I have to say, I think that was one of the reasons I loved it so much. It was just magical to have Joe Arden and Erin Mallon recreate this incredible story. But don't get me wrong, even if you decide to read the book and not listen to it, I am sure you will still love every second of it. And to be honest, I was switching between the audio and e-book depending on what I had to do at the time :DOne of the things I most enjoyed about the second book is getting to know Jericho and India better. It was intriguing seeing a different side of each one of them as well as seeing how the relationship between them develops and changes. Of course, there are quite a few bumps on the road that threaten to pull them apart but in the end, the connection between them proves to be stronger. That doesn't mean that they've found their HEA. There are still threads lurking in the darkness and enemies plotting their demise.So, be prepared for a huge cliffie at the end of this book. Even bigger than the one in the first. One that will leave you reeling and craving to find out what will happen next. I honestly can't wait to get my hands on Heart of the Devil :DSo, in a few words, this book is a must read. Whether you want to get your hands on the audio, e-book or paperback version, I am sure you will love every second of it. But keep in mind that this is not a standalone and the Deal With the Devil needs to be read first. There is also quite the cliffie in the end of the book. So be prepared ;) As for me, I can't wait to get my hands on the next one. I hope it comes sooner than later :DI voluntarily listened and reviewed an advanced audio copy of this book. I don't know Fredrick but I feel like I do after reading this book. I used to be an up and comer, go getting wall-street banker working at Goldman Sachs. I lost my way after business school and for the past two years just coasted in a mediocre job thinking about my past success, wishing I could go back in time.The Sell changed all that. There's one simple line that did it for me. "Call me an old man. But also call me a multi-millionaire." Sorry if that's not the exact line but it was something very similar.Fredrick made me remember that I'm not average and I need to stop doing things average people do. This book was my wake up call.Since reading it, I've been sleeping earlier, going to the gym in the mornings and hustling at night on my side projects. I've already started generating more income and this summer I'll be quitting my job to do other things that get me as excited as real estate does for Fredrick.I don't know if Fredrick will read this but if you do, thank you. Truly. I really needed this book.To everyone else, just buy the book. It's only $20 and honestly, you should learn from someone that is really successful, not just some person that calls themselves a self help coach or anything like that. Fredrick is the real deal.High kick

Funny. Informative. General Knowledge. Good stories. This book by no means a how-to so don't think that after reading this, it will change your mind set and reinvent the wheel of selling. Fredrik has great insights and stories of how he got into the business and how he did his brand. Prospecting is how you find your next client, and he certainly can get that by his social media status and good personality. If you have good personality and you're active in social media maybe MAYBE, it can work for you. But for us in the business, word of mouth from previous client is still how stay relevant. Branding can only go so far, actual work ethic and client service & satisfaction still goes a long way.

One of the best books I've read. It is honest, inspiring, and to the point. Fredrik is a warm, kind soul. This book is written for The Sell so you would think that it is all business, but in the end, it is all soul. The EGO slips away and the bottom line is to live an authentic life. When we are happy, we live happy. That is what attracts The Sell. Excellent read. I only wish I knew Freddy in real life...

Fredrik is incredibly intelligent, obviously look at how crazy successful he is, as well as hilarious and full of heart. What I liked about his book is that it offers actually a vast amount of useful business tips and tools that can be applied to really any type of venture. Plus, he writes in a way that makes it highly enjoyable and empowering. Also I have to admit, in my business I don't know how many times per week we have marketers soliciting to us on social media or how many continuing education courses are offered per week on this and Fredrik's chapter on social media is my go to for this now. Not only did he actually explain the different avenues better, but by following his advice for posts I by far received way more buzz. Love this book and Love Fredrik.

The words on the pages are as full of life as Fredrik is when he is on camera. Don't get me wrong, this is not simply an entertaining book like the Bravo series "Million Dollar Listing NY." There is a great deal of practical and useful information in here for you, no matter which industry you work in. In my case, one of my clients is a Real Estate Team, so I bought the book to help me help THEM. Turns out it is helping me, too :)

I originally bought the book, and then bought the audio book so I could listen in the car. Frederik narrates the book himself, and his wit and charm witnessed on Million Dollar Listing NY really come through. It's quite entertaining, and an easy "read". I am in real estate and his advice is invaluable.

Frederick has such a big personality and you can almost hear his voice as you are reading along. Every page was great and so was the advise. Amazon makes you use stars, but surely this book warrants five high kicks Weee!

I don't watch his show, I don't do social media, and I did not know a thing about him until last morning when I saw him on Morning Joe (MSNBC) "selling" his book. Intrigued, I got it on Kindle and, even though my Thursday was busy, I just finished it (it's before 2 AM on Friday). Fun to read, nothing about it was heavy-going, and I found it practical for me, a person who is decidedly NOT a salesperson! I'm recommending it to my 21 years-old son. Good job, Mr. Eklund. I've read other books about the Apollo 13 disaster as well as the movie so I had some background when I picked up this story. Once again, Olson does a great job of telling the story. It can be difficult sometimes telling a complicated story like this one in such a way that children can understand it. The Apollo 13 disaster makes a fascinating, compelling account, but it can also be very technical. It would have been easy to fall into that problem, but Olson does not, he explains things correctly without getting lost in technical jargon. I also appreciated the inclusion of some of the experiences of Barbara Lovell, the eldest daughter of one of the three astronauts, this gives someone for the younger readers to especially connect with as they read.The book begins with the beginning of the disaster then returns to introduce the astronauts, their families, and what lead up to the situation, including a brief introduction to the creation of NASA and the space program. All of this is done quickly and doesn't bog down the story in the least. I enjoyed reading this account of the events and the people involved. I was left was admiration for the efforts of those involved. It's clear that the astronauts made it back safely because of the efforts of these people. At the same time, and the author points this out, while so many were waiting with baited breath to find out if the astronauts were going to make it back safely, conflict on a much larger scale continued to rage around the world (including the Vietnam War). It's ironic to realize the way Jim Lovell, Fred Haise, and Jim Swigert were turned into heroes for surviving the Apollo 13 disaster, while those who made it possible for them to return safely were not. Society can be remarkably fickle about who it identifies as heroes. In any case, this is a great narrative nonfiction book that middle grade nonfiction lovers are bound to enjoy.

I originally read this book to be able to facilitate a 5th grade "book club" at my son's school. While I was already very familiar with the events that occurred during the Apollo 13 mission, the approach that Tod Olson takes in retelling this story makes it appealing to both boys and girls. Mr. Olson not only conveys the basic details of the accident that led to the failure of the Apollo 13 mission, but also spends a portion of the book focused on the events occurring on the ground as viewed from the perspective of Jim Lovell's (then) teenage daughter, Barbara. By including Barbara's experience of the events as they occurred, Mr. Olson gives young readers a character that they can identify and empathize with.This book may seem intimidating to some readers, as it is over 200 pages long, but there are lots of photos and diagrams included in the book to help readers understand some of the problems and challenges the Apollo 13 astronauts were facing. Additionally, the photos help readers put a face to the names of all the people involved in the Apollo 13 mission, from the astronauts to the members of the ground control teams, to the astronauts' families waiting at home for news of their husbands and fathers. The inclusion of photos, illustrations, and diagrams make this book a fairly easy, straight-forward read for most students.Reading Levels (see chart below): This book has a 6.6 ATOS level and is worth 5.0 AR points. It is rated 910L on the Lexile scale, which puts it in the average 4th-5th grade age range. It is rated a U on the Scholastic Graded Reading Level chart. It is a level 50 book on the Developmental Reading Assessment Level scale. The word count on the book is in excess of 32,000 words, but the vocabulary is appropriate for the 8-12 age range. The book is nonfiction, but Mr. Olson has done an excellent job of framing this story as one would a fiction tale, so that the pace and action flow easily. As an adult reader, it took me just a couple of hours to read this entire book.I would highly recommend this book for students who are looking for interesting and exciting nonfiction, or students who tend to gravitate toward fiction but like a good story. Even as an adult reader, I found this book to be a quick and enjoyable read.

Loved the story of each one aboard and the danger of their travel. So Interesting and kept my attention the whole time.
